I think we will run into problems far earlier than 2140. Just look 30 years ahead and the mining reward will already have dropped so low that at current price levels the hashrate woule have to drop significantly, reducing security alongside. Of course it depends on the price, but personally I don't think BTC will be able to double with every halving forever. My perspective is that, one day, BTC will most likely be that economically important to the whole world that either mining will be centralized by countries (paid from taxes) or that every company will be forced by law to add x amount of hashing power to the network.

It'll be a gradual dynamic process that some of the less efficient miners are going to be out of business, but enough efficient miners will be alive to keep the network going just on the transaction fees.

This is a question for all similar POW coins. My concern is, if fees are enough, doesn't that imply fees are too high? If low fees incentive usage and high fees incentive mining and security, well I just don't like that combination of incentives from a game theory perspective. I really there would be some combination of win-win, decentralized incentives that would drive usage up, even for small transactions, and drive security up. I guess anything you change would come at a cost though. If you keep the emissions going, this comes at the cost of BTC value. If you incentivize through fees this comes at the cost of high enough fees. So maybe I was wrong and the current approach is the only natural way for it to be. However much people value using Bitcoin should be how much they value it being secure, so it makes sense the users would finance the security of the network through their fees.

Transactions will still happen and security still needs to be in place. These are performed by miners. So unless something changes miners are going to remain even if they no longer "mine".
