Interesting and cool video Matt, I agree blood and short tail pythons are beautiful and amazing snakes but the only reason they won't replace ball pythons in my worthless opinion is they are temperamental and don't really like being handled as much as ball pythons and their care is for a higher level of keeper. You can't give a newbie a blood python and expect that snake to thrive it will die of over heating or not being handled correctly. They don't really like being picked up even the ones that tolerate it, they seem to be very uneasy off the ground and their bites are more substantial than a ball python's. I think they make amazing pets just not as easy as a ball python. Again my opinion and I realize it means about 0! Keep up the good work guys!

Although some points here are valid as a short tail breeder I don’t think you’re really looking at the big picture potential of these species, mostly with the point of not having many morphs. You have to remember all species start with 0 morphs in captivity, including balls. And with each new morph more interest is garnered. And they both depend on eachother. More interest equals more breedings and more breedings equals discovering new morphs and thus the cycle continues. Just in the past couple of years two albino borneo lines, pied bloods, and leucistics have hit the market. The trajectory is definitely upward, especially when you look at what the pied morph did for balls
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 11 ай бұрын
There is truth to that certainly, and i think each of the species we talk about in this series (except WDB, that was just for fun) will pull a piece of that marker. That video will be a culmination. As for replacing, i looked at each one as it stands now. As it is very hard to predict the future of number of morphs etc. I do think more are out there, for bloods, carpets, and hogs. More are also there for balls. Balls are now also suffering from a rush to a new morph without doing the work. Then, ee end up with 3 morphs (trick/blitz/hurricane for example) that are actually the same thing genetically. But will be debated forever.

@@MeisMorphs Eventually the dam will break, and then levels will become reasonable. Once new breeders realize it takes big money to buy fancy morphs, that pet owners mostly do not care about. With the economy the way it is, eggs at 3 dollars a dozen, bread getting close to 5 dollars, lower cuts of meat approaching 10 dollars a pound who is going to spend 5,000 dollars for a pet snake? OTH morph hognose snakes are bringing good prices, many other species move so fast online due to youtube videos from the top creators. Most of the snakes "rehomed" are being sold to other breeders, or new breeders. With the pet quality ball pythons being so available there are only so many people looking for balls. Hey I bought mine because he was fifty dollars, and I could have got one for less, but I got mine local.

Not having a STP can't really say alot about them... but with many BPs, I can say I they are where they are for a reason. Beautiful and easy to handle. I can just hand a BP off to someone no problem, but there aren't many other snakes you can do that with and definitely not an unsocialized blood. Both are beautiful, but neither are exciting as far as life down the road. I can leave my bps enclosures unlocked, and they will still be there in the morning, my carpet, or boas, not so much. To take the BP off the pedastool it would have to be active, intelligent, crazy beautiful, and friendly from birth. So impossible since the smarter/ more active snakes also like to share their teeth with you from time to time.

I don't know about handing off snakes too much. But I have had always been able to tame a snake from the wild so that I could handle it. I remember my father threatening me to whip me if I brought home another cotton mouth. To be fair I did not know he was a dangerous snake until my father saw him resting in a bucket of water. Size never mattered for when it came to snakes, morphs do not matter, temperament does. My BP has a great temperament, but he only eats mice, all my other snakes eat rats. The top three youtube reptile creators are going to determine what snakes are going to move in the market. Clint's Reptiles, Snake Discovery, and Wickens Wicked Reptiles. DMExotics is one of my favorites but he is on the exotic end of snakes.

@walkingwolf8072 11 ай бұрын
Most people are not prepared for hunger strikes, as far as income if they are eating, adult ball pythons eat large rats. Unless breeding your own rats feeding a large group of BP can get expensive. People living with limited space may not have the room to breed both snakes, and rats. I don't breed snakes, but do breed rat for my snakes, BUT with three female rats that put out 15 babies each a month selling for 3 to 5 dollars a rat(size). That more than covers the cost of food for both my rats, and my dogs. IF a person can sell the rats, a person can make a good income. OTH dubia roach breeding does not take up much space, and feeding them is just reducing the trash from food.

I agree to an extent, they will never out sell ball pythons though. What they do offer is a breeding platform that is more economical. Hognose take less space, they eat smaller prey, and they bring more stable prices in the market. If a person is breeding for a stable income they make more sense.

I remember when I roamed the streets of Key West there was a man that walked Duval street with a Burmese python, and a macaw for a sum of money a person get their picture taken with both. The python was around 15 feet, and never went for the parrot. A well fed snake that has been socialized is not a danger to anyone. To be fair I would not let a large snake near small children though. BTW a large parrot can do far more damage than most non venomous snakes. A macaw or cockatoo can easily take a finger off, yet people have them around children. Unlike snakes that bite for food or defense, a parrot will bite for emotions.

Snakes strike for two reasons, self defense, and food. I always wash my hands before handling a snake. Even wild snakes once they learn to trust do not strike, there is no need to. When I was a child I brought home a cotton mouth, but I worked him with a hooked stick before I handled him. My dad made me release him though. I had a friend in the Keys that had several venomous snakes that he free handled. Never ever handle a snake with the smell of chicken on you, or rodents, work the snakes with hooks until they trust you. I don't want a blood because I already have a ball python. I am thinking of getting a sand boa, I already have a rosy, and a rainbow boa. I would like to get a captive bred eastern black rat snake, I can catch a wild one, but then I don't want to deal with the parasites that wild have.
@Brongs4life
@Brongs4life 7 ай бұрын
Their body language is pretty easy to read, once you learn your animal and the species. If they are barely sticking their tongue out and holding it, they are very stressed and probably going to strike. If you're holding them and you feel their whole body tense up, they are stressed out and probably going to strike. If their tail is wagging, they are getting "excited" and that can be good or bad. Pretty much just keep them cooler, the low 80s and build a relationship with them. Gain their trust and you have an amazing animal.
