I met Will Clark in the Super Dome. My cousin and I went up to him with our programs in order for him to sign them. We were there to watch Mississippi State and LSU in the cajun classic. The Cajun Classic at that time was Mississippi schools against Louisiana Schools in baseball. Will Clark was my favorite player later on. Though I must admit at 10 or 11 years old I was nervous about asking him for his autograph. He was sitting in about the 15th row or so when we went up to him. I'll never forget what he asked us, "What's the magic word?" I just froze and my cousin said "please". At the time I was a little to young to really understand how great of a player he was. My dad is a Mississippi State alum as is my uncle, my cousin's dad, therefore they coaxed us to go ask him for his auotgraph. I wanted to play baseball at Mississippi State, but didn't have a good work ethic when it came to baseball. I eventually went there, but it was for economics not baseball.

I’m a natural born right handed hitter but I always emulated Will Clark’s swing as a kid. One day I went into the batting cages and tried batting lefty for the first time. I had probably my best performance ever in the cages that day. For that one day I felt like my childhood hero, Will Clark.

Will Clark is the only reason I'm a sf. giants fan. He came to a baseball camp I attended at like 7 or 8 and treated me like I was his own kid. Really stand up guy whom deserves all the accolades anyone can lay upon him. Thanks for making a kid feel like something special. Best swing I ever saw (tied with griffey jr. )

Amazing tribute...thank you. Amazing swing he had. He was my favorite player as a kid and when my grandfather took me to my first game in 1989 the Thrill hit a HR to dead center during the bottom of the 1st inning. I will never forget the eruption that ensured at Candlestick.

Will Clark came to Modesto CA one time for an appearance at a car dealership that I read about in the paper after the fact. The paper said that if you didn't get an autograph, to send a self-addressed envelope to the Giants office. I sent two baseball cards that my oldest son had and he had signed both and they were back in less than two weeks.

I just wanted to thank you for making this REMARKABLE video of Will "The Thrill" Nuschler Clark. I was also one of the few that idolized him during that time. He actually kept me away from a lot of bad decisions. This was when the game ended. The "Steroid" era was going on, but not for him. These were the last days of "Purity" in baseball.....Or at the least, it's how I wish to remember it. Thank you again for making this.........For my teenage idol.

I remember one game that I saw (can't remember if I was actually at the Stick) where Clark was running down a pop foul at first and it drifted into the stands. He leaned over the wall in an attempt to reach it, and ended up almost falling into a kid's lap. As he got untangled, he reaches over and takes a piece of popcorn from the kid's bag and ruffles his hair. The kid was all smiles as Will Clark made his day. What a class act, and a great player.

You know, I wrote a letter to Will Clark back when I was around 10 or 12 years old... because I was a huge baseball fan then and I wanted to BE him since I was a lefty too. He was the MAN to me and nobody-to this day- could tell me that some other player was a better athlete than the Thrill. He never wrote me back, of course, but when I see vids like this it affirms the fact that this man was a legend. Will Clark had one of the most beautiful swings ever! Lumbering... yet graceful and deadly.

The Thrill is my all time baseball hero. I still have his SI cover framed. That natural lefty swing was so good to all fields. I’m a lefty too and have a swing so similar to Clark. In the early 90’s, the guys in my league called me “Thrill” because of the similarities. At the time, they had no idea Will was my guy. I didn’t copy the swing, it’s just very similar. Great for spraying the ball all over. Glad I grew up in the Bay Area and got to see him live at The Stick. Love the A’s too.

Sweet swing, clutch, class, gold glove, the perfect all around 1st basemen and team leader. I mean this as a compliment to Will Clark. From 1987-1991 he was the best all-around player in baseball. His swing is often compare to Ted William's. Excellent 3 hole hitter that walked more than he struck out. Legend! It is truly an injustice he is not in the hall of fame!

@@ousamaabdu794 I love Rickey Henderson but he wasn't a better hitter or a better fielder than will the thrill. The greatest lead off hitter ever. Definitely a better base stealer. But Will was the purest of hitters and a far superior power hitter and rbi machine and a gold glove during the period. Also the national league had superior pitching than the American league at time. If I need a hit or a walk to get on base in the 9th I'm sending up Rickey. But if I need a run driven in the 9th Will the thrill is the man.
@ousamaabdu794
@ousamaabdu794 4 жыл бұрын
@@animefan9329 With all due respect I would have to rate from 1987 -1991 1) Rickey Henderson hands down, won a ring, 1990 MVP. Had an amazing post season as well in 89. Rates much higher than The Thrill defensively in those years as well. 2) This will come as a surprise but I would have to put Wade Boggs in at # 2. If you look at the advanced metrics in those years he was flat out a beast! Highest WAR, I was actually surprised he had a higher WAR than Rickey. 3) Barry Bonds Not much fanfare was spoken upon Barry before his 90 MVP season, and he should have won the award in 91 as well. His baserunning acumen, plate discipline and out of his world defensive metrics from 87 -89 caused those years to also be stellar as well. 4) Tie between Will Clark and Cal Ripken You are right, the pitching in the NL was much better in those years than the AL. And the Thrill was an excellent all around hitter in a pitcher's park. And he should have won the MVP over my man Kevin Mitchell in 89. His defensive metrics were below average in each of those years, and to be honest I never remember him having plaudits for his defense back then. Nevertheless, he was a star and I wish he played another 5 years instead retiring early, I think he would be an HOFer. Ripken, on the other hand never missed a game and he is VASTLY, I mean VASTLY underrated on the defensive side. 3rd all time in defensive WAR. And his 91 MVP campaign was a season for the ages. Your thoughts, I could discuss baseball day!
@animefan9329
@animefan9329 4 жыл бұрын
@@ousamaabdu794 since you don't remember the thrills defensive exploits I will remind you. His fielding percentage is higher than Ricky's every year. In 1988 Henderson made 12 errors at the easiest position in the outfield (left field). Clark also won a gold glove at 1st base in 1991. Offensively, thank you for noting Clark's 1989 season. He should have won the mvp but he didn't. Clark also had a fabulous NLCS against the Cubs hitting .600. Yes he lost to Ricky's A's in the quake series. But he had to deal with The roid brothers and a pitching staff that had smoke Stewart, bob Welch, and the eck. As far as the overrated millennial stat the war, I really don't take to much stock in that. Yes wade was a green monster doubles machine/batting titles. But he wasn't a perennial mvp candidate during that 5yr time frame like the thrill. Barry bonds was great in 90 and 91 but sup par offensively in 87-89. Ripken struggled in 87,88,89,90. Mvp in 1991 true. But That's it. From 87 to 91 Will Clark finished in the top 5 in mvp voting 4 out of those 5 seasons. The only "bad" season he had was 1990 when "only" hit .295 with 19hrs and 95 Rbi's. No other player in that five year span can say that. Will Clark was the Best from 1987 to 1991!

@@animefan9329 My man you definitely are a knowledgeable and passionate fan of the game salute to you.. !! While you have made a compelling argument, one issue I have to vehemently disagree is your opinion regarding WAR (wins above replacement) if someone else doesn't know. Point blank, bottom line WAR is the most complete, quantifiable and accurate assessment of one's overall value in all of SPORTS! MLB has always contributed millions upon millions of $$$ in regards to stats. They've always been way ahead of the other major sports in this regard, and with baseball being an individual sport to a certain degree, statistically speaking accurate analysis is more likely than most other more team related sports. I could go typing forever in regards to all of the moving parts that go into creating WAR, but just look at how complex and detailed to the minutia the nuisances of creating the ultimate stat. Also, the BBBWA guys very few of the played the game and would just look at the big 3 stats for both pitchers and position players to figure out who was the MVP candidates. I don't know if you read or currently read Baseball America. Ive been reading it for over 30 years now. Every year they would do a poll of all MLB managers who had the best tools, speed, arm, all around player ect. The results from the mangers tended to be quite different at times than who was getting the most MVP votes. Much more simliaralities to the WAR leaders than who was garnering MVP votes from the writers who never played the game. At 43, I've been playing baseball competitively for 35 years and ones defensively skills are HUGE. This was vastly overlooked in the pre WAR/ advanced analytics age that we are in today. Look at the all time WAR leaderboards and there are very very few surprises. The players who are considered to be the best ever, are at the top. It's scary how accurate WAR is!! Looking forward to your reply lol!

Ended his career by hitting .345 in 51 games for the Cardinals in 2000. Dude could still swing the bat!

Cubs fan who remembers him winning the NLCS by himself in '89. Wish there was a "highlight" of him firing the ball to the shortstop to start around the horn...it just looked cool as hell when he did it.

If Clark had the pitching staff Giants have now, he could of won multiple championships. IMO the greatest player ever to put on a Giants uniform.

Nice. Just wish there'd have been a few clips from his short but memorable stint with the Cardinals. He came over in a late-season trade in the middle of a pennant race, and started blasting the ball out of the park and hit nearly 400 for the month.

Great tribute. My all time favorite player. Maybe should've included the base hit up the middle off of Mitch Williams in the 89 nlcs and the homer off of Maddux in that same series.

very good list esp. the first two; and Eric Davis had a smooth powerful swing. Mark Grace's swing was good but not as good as Olerud's in my view

Evan O'Brien not necessarily true Billy Meyer isn’t in the Hall of Fame but the Pirates retires his number 1 (for whatever reason!!) Bill Mazeroskis number was retired before he got entered into the hall of fame so did Willie Stargell. Billy Martin, Dale Murphy, Fred Hutchinson, Johnny Pesky, Steve Garvey, Tony Oliva and others have their numbers retired but aren’t in the Hall of Fame. And sometimes they retire their numbers a long time after they have been retired like Paul Waners number wasn’t retired by the Pirates until over 60 years after he had been retired. Teams can retire any number they want, whenever they want.

I really enjoyed your video. What ba swing Sweet Swinging Will Clark had! It dawned on me while watching this... Did he even t really have a "retirement tour", or did he just have to stop playing because of injury? Didn't he have a bad one l knee or back? Again, great video! I loved his intensity and that smirk he would get on his face when he was fired up!

RacerX i miss this era in baseball Will Clark was a joy to watch he played the corners top notch and the eye and bat handles was pure natural talent he could put the ball anywhere he wanted even the great Tony Gwynn R.I.P said Will Clark made him nervous everytime he came to the plate and that swing , Will Clark belongs in the HOF damn shame
