Will Comet Atlas light up the Sky in October?

I was 10 when Halle Bopp appeared and I'll never forget just looking outside my front door and it was there even with light pollution . Very clear to the naked eye and very easy to see in the sky.

It won’t be hale bopp it has not disintegrated It might get mag -3 with a mcnaught tail

I still to this day can remember seeing Hall Bopp and northern lights when I lived in Northern Ontario in the absolutely darkest skies. The aurora was just dancing around Hale Bopp I pulled over and watched it for an hour in awe. Once in a lifetime even I was glad to witness…I close my eyes and I can still see it as it left a lasting impression on me.

I was working nights in Northern Virginia. Someone in my room mentioned that you could see the comet outside the building, so I went outside on my break and saw Hale Bopp. It was clearly, and brightly visible, even from a lighted parking lot. Probably the only comet I have seen to date with my naked eye. I was lucky to be living there at the time, as the area was noted for its clear skies. For most of my childhood and presently now, I live in an area that doesn't have good viewing conditions, unless you travel far from city lights, due to commonly hazy or cloudy conditions.

There are some nice dark parts of America. My favourite is Yellowstone National Park among many.

Saw Halley's ☄️ back in 86 when I was in the Merchant Navy, got up early in the morning to see it, we were somewhere off the coast of Costa Rica, really dark sky but I thought it was rather underwhelming tbh, just a big fuzzy ball. Comets Hyakutake and Hale Bopp were really spectacular though, especially Hale Bopp I did see the so called Green Comet last year for a couple of nights, just a very faint blob, bit like M13, but I was able to image it multiple times between 24-12-2022 and 06-02-2023. Anyway clear skies and lets hope Atlas delivers something special and if not, there's always the next one.

I remember staring at Comet Hale-Bopp over our neighborhood park in the west every evening for a long time. It was probably one of my peak astronomical experiences as a 9-10 year old.

Spotted comet Atlas on the 22nd, 24th and the 29th sept in Australia. Was easily naked eye on the 29th. Spectacular in binos! If you are further southI would try to spot it over the next few days before it gets too low.

Apparently Halley was a bust somewhat. It was only really visible in the South. But Hale-Bopp was a beauty. Got a good shot of Neowise in 2020. I've been monitoring this one on the Subaru meteor live feed. It could do anything at this point. I do like that shot with the tower. Many memories from days out there.

I remember Hale Bopp, it’s was around for a long time and it was the first and only comet that I have seen. I would love to know if there are likely to be any more viewable with the naked eye in the next 20 years.

Comet NEOWISE was definitely visible with the naked eye, but it didn't have a big tail like Hale Bopp.

@@starman1969 Yes Neowise i saw too with the naked eye. Hale Bopp had two naked eye tails dust and gas. Also a third tail sodium was discovered using equipment on Hale-Bopp.

Hmm neowise was the first one we saw with a huge classic tail. Hale Boggs was super bright ball but tail was so short and stubby it seemed more like just a ball.

I haven't been out to look for that comet yet due to its ungodly hour.I think it only comes up about 0500.Neowise was the last naked eye one I saw and before that Holmes .

Been watching this brite comet for a year now it disappeared when it got close to the sun, and now its going to be more brighter , October 12 to 17 after that it will dimmer in brightness.

Apparently the brightest comet ever recorded was the comet of 1729 at Mag -3. Some are saying this one could be as bright as -5!

The light spread of a visible comet also has to be taken into account when measuring magnitude. Therefore, a point of light like a star with a magnitude of mag 0 will be easier to see than a comet with the same magnitude, due to the spreading of the light.

Hale Bopp was brighter than that veiwed in the northern hemisphere at least, absolute at -1.8 but some sources pegged it as 0 for a short time.

I am going to try and get video of it in October I'm in new Zealand what date would be best time to see it after sunset. I live in New Plymouth New Zealand. i am going to film it with the Nikon p1000 3000mm zoom lens in 4k.☄☄☄☄☄ I also saw Haley's comet in 1986 it just looked like a fuzzy white smear blob a bit like a distant galaxy far away i was in a small town with street lights. It was on my birthday and i was 19 years old unfortunately i didn't have binoculars then. If i live to 95 i will see Haley's comet when I'm 95 years old it would be cool birthday present to see it twice in a lifetime in 2062 . As long as the world doesn't end by then or i die first LOL 😂😂🤣🤣
