Will CRKT Handle Fit Cold Steel Tomahawks?

Can you put CRKT handles on Cold Steel hawks? Does the new CRKT Hammer Chogan Handle fit the old Woods Chogan? This video is for those wondering: What's the difference between the new CRKT Hammer Chogan, CRKT Woods Chogan and Cold Steel Tomahawk handles. I get asked on occasion if they are interchangeable. I thought I would cover it in a video for reference.

Agreed, At least three different that I know of.. Woods Chogan, Kangee, Nobo all Oval style, Hammer Chogan and a few others I believe have newer teardrop shaped, and there is the Cimbri with the rectangular hockey stick handle.

Awesome information. Still have 3 or 4 spare handles for CS hawks. Been wondering if they'd fit if I decided to pick up CRKT Chogan. Now it's clear the handles between Chogan's aren't even interchangeable.

This video, my friend, was a long time overdue for all Tomahawk afficionados .. thank you so much that you took the effort to show the differences. Great Info! - personally, i think that one is either "Team Cold Steel"or "Team CRKT" .. i have about a dozen CS Hawks (2 Riflemans, 3 Norse and 7 Trail Hawks) .. and i will stick to Cold Steel. Don't get me wrong, i think that the CRKT Hawks are very fine too .. i just prefer to stick to one company when itcomes to traditional hawks with wooden handles, so i can interchange the handles. - having said that, i also got a tactical Kangee full-metal-hawk. That is a fine combat haw. - Overall, i think the CS Trail Hawk is the best tomahawk on the market, and for decades.It is a one-for-all tool, and n efficient fighting hawk. A beast in sheaps clothing.

Thanks for doing this! I always figured the CRKT handles were larger around. Are the handles' tapers different? My CS handles are a bit small for me so I've wrapped one.

I think CS has other length handles that will fit the tomahawks, like the War Hammer and, of course, the long Viking stuff. I kinda want to get a 40" handle to recreate one of those Polish Shepard's axes.

@@contrabassbob Yes, the longer CS hawk handles fit too, I have the Hand axe, and Battle axe. I dont remember what length handle the war hammer comes with, I use one handle (24") for the hammer and a riflemens hawk that I use when truck camping. Swap it out between the two for wood work or digging in a firepit or getting unstuck. I agree with the taper being too much on the hawks. I think it is supposed to make for better throwing? I normally buy a Sledghammer handle and use it on my favorite hawks, this way I can keep it as thick as possible on the bottom end.

Really don't understand why crkt does things. Different size for every model. Guess I'll just keep my coldsteel. They do everything I need and are cheap. I think I want the Hudson Bay hawk next. I have the trail hawk and the frontier hawk. Do you think its worth getting the Hudson Bay hawk?

Not one of my Cold steel hawks came with a good handle, they all nearly went all the way through the eye of the hawks. The rifleman hawk had such a big gap around the bottom of the eye. When the handle was shaped at the top ( with only 3mmleft at the top of the handle) underneath of the head, the bottom eye had a 2mm gap all the way around the edge. I tried all my handles, it went in the bin. My advice is, don't buy a few of these hawks, buy a top quality one and forget about all the crap on the market. It is cheaper!

Excellent comparison, irritating results...Ridiculous levels of proprietary crap going on, why can't they all just agree on some kind of standardized system. I wouldn't mind seeing a comparison between the woods chogan 19" to a longer 26 inch handle version, or other lengths in between. Maybe upgrade the length of all of them to see how much of a difference it makes to chopping power and where that sweet spot is. Of course I think to get any decent chopping performance out of the chogan you have to really thin down the bit quite a lot to begin with.

Yes, reminds me of printer ink cartridges. They make just as much money selling handles as the head. At some point I would like to do a series on handles covering length, types of wood, weight and how to make.

@@Scablands_Scavenger a video on how to whittle and sand a handle by yourself (how to video ) making from a sledgehammer for example would be really good. Or even a 2 x 4 or whatever flat piece of hardwood. It takes some skill. Not sure if all can do that. But it's certainly worth trying and showing them.
