Some apple trees need a different variety nearby for pollination and fruit production. If the two varieties don't flower simultaneously you may not get any fruit that year. This is why you sometimes get only a small number of fruit, if any at all, despite a full tree of blossoms. I have many apple trees. Each year differs with regard to the blossom-fruit ratio.
