Yeah that's why I made the video. I see this argument come up from time to time on Facebook and have tried to convince people in theory why it's fine but figured having an actual video showing ridiculous examples would put it to rest:). Thanks for watching!

Cool test. But the ridiculousness of the way the outcast looked made me laugh!
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
Yeah they were all pretty silly to look at and especially silly to drive. The extremes I was going to in order to give the test the best chance it could have hurting something really made driving them challenging.

This is exactly what I was looking for: I’m putting street tires on my off-road truck that are much smaller so this is quite informative. I wish you could test a complete set of each of these tires, to compare generally large tires to small .
@DoRC8 ай бұрын
Well if the tires are all the same size it doesn't matter what size they are as far as the differentials are concerned. Larger tires will put more strain on everything just because of the increased rotating mass and increased mass in general and changing tire size effectively changes your gearing going to smaller wheels and tires will not have any negative impact on either one of those other than to make the car slower

Thank you for testing and potentially sacrificing diffs! I put the wrong input gear in my mojave before 13 front and 10 rear. That didn't end well for the front diff 🤣
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
Yeah mismatching the input gear to the ring gear would definitely cause problems :-)
@vivos71 Жыл бұрын
To consider what’s happening, the different size tires will demand action from the diff all the time. This will mainly churn up diff fluid and create heat and force the bevel gears against the diff casing. Depending on how well that inside of that diff is shimmed, this could cause the teeth to not mesh as well, and premature wear occurs. In 1/8 racing relatively thin center diff fluids are used, to allow the front end to spin up a tiny bit to prevent oversteer, in the case of those vehicles, there is center diff action every time throttle is applied, but the quality of most kit diffs are able to put up with it all day long. If you do something like put one big and small tire on both the front and rear end, they will sort of neutralize at the center, and running really thick diff fluid will make the smaller tire tend to just spin all the time.
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
Yes but the Tires are already spinning a different speeds all the time due to variations in traction. I ran the large vehicle with both a small tire on the front and the rear and both small tires on the front too cover both of those situations. An extreme situation Like I showed will almost certainly cause premature wear but that was also very extreme. Most of the time when people are running different size tires it's not going to be one tire being triple the size of the other ones. Ultimately it was just a show that in general running different size tires is not going to hurt anything.

@@DoRC that rc car have good diff you can not see the damage right away . Let try with redcat rc you will see My redcat shredder diff shred within hour with big tires. using factory tire which is smaller the diff are last much longer
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
This wasn't really a big tires on a car versus small tires on a car thing. When you put larger tires on a car it's going to put more stress on the entire drivetrain because the tires have more mechanical advantage. On a vehicle like the shredder where the differentials are already pretty weak putting large tires on it it's going to put a lot more strain on them. This video was more about testing whether or not running different size tires in the same vehicle would cause it to self-destruct. Running different size tires will put a bit more strain on things but most differentials will be up to the task. Of course if you have differentials that are already just about to break with normal tires a little bit of extra strain might be all it takes. Thanks for watching!
@vivos71 Жыл бұрын
@@DoRC maybe this test with some thing like an ultra high grip onroad car on a prepared racing surface might work the drivetrain in interesting ways. The big help is that all diffs are pretty much open. Locked diffs will just cause chattering more likely than anything rlse
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
Give it a try! I still think it would be fine but it's be interesting to find out:)
@georgeaffonso8866 Жыл бұрын
The arrma felony runs wider bigger tires in the back. And the rear diff is geared differently from the front. Now running the same sizes tires all around may not cause any damage. It's a good idea to change the rear diff to match the front for performance and handling Characteristics.
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
Yeah I mentioned that in the video. I've just seen a lot of people make comments saying that if you run the same size tires you're going to destroy the car which in this case absolutely isn't true. might handle a little weird but it'll be fine. Thanks for watching!

I like the concept of what you did there. But I think the outcast with the wildly different tires didn’t end up that badly because those small tires weren’t really getting much traction to offer that much friction and the grass was wet. But good content fella!!
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
Technically that would actually make it worse. When the small tires were in the front they had so little traction that the front wheels were spinning basically constantly at high velocity. I also tested this out on higher traction services I just didn't include it in the video. The results were basically the same.

I'm new to this kind of RC world, and I want to put bigger wheels on so that it has significantly more clearance from the ground, for off-roading, but then I want to put smaller wheels on than the stock ones for street racing. How do I determine the max diameter/ weight of the wheel that I can use without causing issues? Hypothetically if you could keep your weight of the wheel identical even though it's changing size one would assume either going smaller or larger diameter would actually be easier on the car versus the other way being harder.
@CatDad11065 ай бұрын
I’d bet something like a touring car with belt drives would hate life with different wheels. Cool test 👍
@DoRC5 ай бұрын
Maybe but to be honest I'm really not convinced that would even be a problem. RC cars have so little traction compared to full size cars that I'm just not sure you would break anything. Of course it's possible but I'd have to see it to believe it.

The bigger the tires - the faster your diffs (and drive shafts) will go out the window. Period. End of story.

Yes. The more rotating mass you have the harder it is on the drivetrain but that wasn't the point of this video. The point of this video is to determine whether running tires of different sizes on the same vehicle would be problematic.

You should totally do a test where you gear the front ring & pinion 1-3 teeth larger or smaller than the rear ring and pinion. So it'll overdrive or under drive one end of the vehicle. That outta make it really interesting. I ain't gunna lie, the Outcast had me laughing out loud with those goofy tires on. there. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Glad you enjoyed. This was one of my favorite videos to make. Unfortunately most RCs don't usually come with different available differential ratios so I'm not sure I'd be able to do that though different sized tires really accomplish the same purpose.

Should be ok on cars with a centre dif, (if itisn't locked) cars without not so good.
@DoRC Жыл бұрын
The second car I tried has no center differential. Makes no difference. The traction on these vehicles is low enough that The tires will just slip without any issue. Not saying it'll drive very well but it's not going to hurt anything. Thanks for watching!

The way I understand it, putting a single wheel/tyre on isn't going to make any difference (other than handling).. The gears inside the differential will just do their job & spread the uneven load. Same thing will happen if you put two different sized wheels/tyres on the front or back on a car with a centre differential... BUT..!!!... If you fit two different sizes on the front or back of a car WITHOUT a centre differential... That's where things are going to start to wear.! Either the centre driveline or the diff crown & input will wear out.! I'd put my money on the crown & input going first.! ...... ...... ...... ...... A very interesting video... THANK YOU.!! Stay safe out there mate & best wishes from Scotland 🏴 🙏 ♥ 📻 🎮 🔋 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚔 🚕 🚖 🚗 🚘 🚙 🚚 🚛 🚜 🏎️ 🏍️ 🚤 🛥️ ✈️ 🛩️ 🚁.!

Yeah that's why I covered all the scenarios. I do believe you go crazy like I did and drive it a lot that yes you will have increased wear but There's also no practical purpose to do what I did in the video. Most of the time of people are putting different sized tires on They're just slightly different size because they either don't have a matching set of tires or they're going for a certain aesthetic. And that case I don't think it would be a problem even long-term. Thanks for watching!
