Tom Tom mounts up some new tires and cuts the rear suspension off of Dig Dug in preparation for an upgrade to 4 links and coilover shocks. A visit to a friends house blows his mind when he checks out an ultra four car that sparks his imagination.

In high school I took a sliderule class. If you had an A average GPA, we could take a class instead of going to homeroom. One of the courses they offered was slide rule. I was SO GOOD at sliderule. I knew I would eat up Physics classes in college. Then the 4-function calculator was released when I was a senior in high school and my sliderule knowledge was obsolete. But learning the slide rule was not totally wasted. For one thing, I understood logarithms, and I got an intuitive feel for logarithmic values. Also, the slide rule required you to keep track of your decimal point in your head. You also needed to learn to keep a running estimate in your head as you did the calculations. That is still a useful tool, even when using a calculator.

When I was a physics student at Wyoming, I was taking a Chem class. My calculator battery died in the middle of the final. But I had been carrying my uncle's old slide rule around because it was cool. (It's a scientist thing. 8-) ). Saved my grade on that final.

Glad I wasn't the only one, in 77 my calculus/trig teacher didn't allow us to use calculates on tests (so much for a $250 Ti, lol) I asked about sliderules, he laughed & said " if you know how to use one!". Lol! Thank you Mr Grumm, our HS physics & algebra 2 teacher, & former Sikorsky engineer!!

Tom, Take a close look at the Pittsburgh gantry crane at Harbor Freight with a 1 ton chain fall hoist...I was skeptical but found it to make working alone infinitely safer.

I bought the chain hoist when it was on sale. I bought a set of rollers on Amazon and the brackets to use with the channel for hanging conduit and pipe in industrial building. I have a 20’ x 30’ metal garage and plan on running the channel on the frame of the building down the center and will give me 30’ of travel.

Thanks Tom Tom. It was easy to see that Matt and you are close friends who respected each other, and at first I was dissapointed when you started in your own project, but a lot also happen off camera and I'm sure you still are in contact. I understand quite well that a man with your skills love to do your own builts, and in addition you should have done a lot of work in an other job to pay for such a built from a specialist like you. Later on I think you will also build vehicles for customers, because your skills are overwhelming. I became paralyzed and disabled from a vaccine, and have been bedridden the last 2,5 years. And I have tried to use my small amount of strength to follow and learn from some experienced people with different skills I have found interesting. Ofcourse I would love to get back all- or at least some of my strength because I love working with projects within my field of experience. I have respect for all the paralyzed people who are feeling reduced quality of life because of their injury, but if or when I could start working again I would really feel happiness for working again and try never to complain about the wheechair. Best Regards from Arne in Norway

I don't know how anyone else might try to direct, but when I replaced the treated pine that was in the bed of the truck (a '98 Dakota) I got second-hand (one owner), he was so proud of that bed he'd built (I got it in '04) but the grain was already opening up and the boards were cupping. Not really ideal for the look I wanted. So I collaborated with some of the guys that logged part-time like myself. 'Round here, you use what you got, so I cut a #1 Red Oak log, had it sawed into 1-3/8" boards and had them kiln-dried. After the planing, I built a trough to hold all the boards with a 1" step in the ɓottom to hold them off the bottom. Then I poured gallons of linseed oil to cover them completely. After 6 weeks I removed the boards and let them air dry before installing. Sounds like a long process and a lot of work, but I used the straightest, tightest grain in the log, and 20 years now with absolutely no complaints. And it's still beautiful. Thanks for listening!
