Durant was a kind and compassionate author he never heaps coals of scorn on religious or philosophical topics and seems them as a whole in a sense. I admire philosophers who are like children in that they see the world in curiosity and did assume their time to learn ever stopped but, kept going throughout their lives. Durant was like this and I think that is what a philosopher should be! I love his writings and recommend them to everyone!

If one types "greatest ideas of all time" into KZbin, this comes out first. At 176,023 views since the upload in 2015, it goes to show what people are not looking up. I first came across Durant 20 years ago while at the famed Marshall Chess Club in New York; I started talking to a famous chess grandmaster about history and life and I asked, "What books would you recommend - for me to better myself?" He told me to look up Durant and mentioned a few titles. My gratefulness compounded after he died a few years ago. The passing of knowledge happens on many scales.

This work is a torrential sweep of ideas that continue to shape the world. Perhaps, we can still build a brighter future, despite the creeping 21st-century disdain for lofty ideals. Perhaps, we can strive for excellence and use our collective knowledge to better understand ourselves and each other. Perhaps, those who listen carefully will feel inspired to create a more intelligent, well-informed, and compassionate society that cares for the labor and sacrifices of all those great men and women who came before us.

@@stephenburke4223 Well, in the bible he went into the woods (with Mary Magdalene?) and it is said he "prayed" for forty days and nights.... what about?? what could he possibly ask for or pray for, and to whom?? I mean he is all three in one and all that, so he can't be praying to another one... Why the need for solitude? why the desperation. and why'd it all become too much for him, not just in this one occasion but but in several others. How come he count change his "destiny" as to be crucified? These are not my issues anymore, but for those who still believe... the incomplete balm-ing answers shouldn't be sufficient.

Einstein is completely overrated, he's mostly a media creation. Pointcaré and Lorentz did special relativity and Hilbert general relativity. At best he can get the E=mc², but it wasn't the important part (radioactivity was understood before). His most original work was the cosmological constant stuff that quite few people know about. And his actual nobel price was for the photoelectric effect, which isn't really mind blowing. The two space-time really stunning discovery was not at all Einstein, but Poincaré mostly and Lorentz a little.

Marilyn Von Savant, Walter Russell, Helen Keller, William Shakespeare, Paramahansa Yogananda. Mark Twain, Winston Churchill, Sir Isaac Newton, Leonardo DaVinci, Steve Jobs, Charles Darwin, Walt Disney, Sen, Barbara Jordan, Amadeus Mozart, Emanuel Swedenborg, and...Jodie Foster! Yes, God, would be present and listening as the light bulb in the ceiling and every molecule of the air. Of course, there'd be a serpent slithering quietly along the baseboards on the floor. I'd let the late Stephen Hawking sit this one out but ask Neil DeGrasse Tyson to humor and baffle us while Carl Sagan is in another galaxy on vacation!
