People have been rolling their eyes at me for years for saying this. Indie titles capture the spirt of older titles that were, in themselves, made by smaller independent teams. Modern games are awkward masses of corporate collaboration that care more about the psychology of sales rather than the psychology of play. People are turning to indie and retro titles, and triple A developers are too caught up in AI to realize their customers are no longer supporting them.

I don't know if gen Z will save gaming, but I'm certainly tired of the self-congratulating writing that appears on a lot of millenial games.

I don't think Gen Z has a chance bc of how society is and how they view their place in it. Every new generation is always going to be the worst generation and bitch about how bad off they are compared to prior generations. The issue is, Gen Z is a generation of lemmings all trying to pretend they're more special compared to the person sitting next to them wearing the same clothes, watching the same videos, following the same celebrities. We can talk about how AAA games are all the same, but its not just games, it's EVERYTHING. The sad reality is, Millennials still a decade away if not longer from being in a position to start taking over leadership positions and Gen Z will probably be dying off by the time they reach that position themselves. You're talking about how only AAA studios can make the pretty games, I'll go with that, but that's not true any more. We are seeing literal shovelware games that look like AAA games bc of UE5. We live in a world where indy studios and even single indy developers can use UE5 and you could argue it's about as difficult to use as RPG Maker and it will cost you about as much. There are tools built into modern engines that would each immediately hack huge swaths out of the requirements for staffing and time in AAA game development, but these massive corporations can't make shifts like that easy, so they just keep doing it the same way they have for decades. The people that are in the team and occasionally department leadership roles are the people who either built these tools or worked with the people that built them. And even they proposed using them, likely for the 10,000th time, and management approved it then they would be responsible for getting dozens of people laid off. AAA game development isn't soulless bc they're massive teams, they're soulless and lack innovation bc you have several teams of people doing the most mundane shit aspect of game development bc its just easier to make people do it than train someone how to do something management doesn't understand. There's an ex-Bethesda dev who pointed out everything I've said while showing off the new game he's building in UE5 by himself and which he'll have finished making faster than any AAA dev cranks out the newest entry in an annualized series. At one point, while fleshing out the contents of a building, he shows how easy it is to do and points out that just for that one room he was able to do in seconds what Bethesda would be paying an entire team to do over several weeks. The problem for Gen Z is that I think they've grown up in a world that has conditioned them to fall in line with less resistance than any generation before. They've been led to think that all this shit that doesn't matter is important and is what makes them special so that they can be happy when they grow up and their job is placing plates on tables for 9 straight years on TES7, which will be renamed Skyrim 2 after TES6 turns out to be a massive disappointment. I don't think Zoomers are inherently flawed or are a bad generation, I just think that they've been raised to be the meat for the grinder and each one has a special little bow tie that makes them special... until they're ground up and sold to their own kids and grandkids. How people my age identify matters bc them being special makes the company special for hiring them. By the time you guys enter the workforce and are trying to get the jobs where that sort of thing is considered, they'll have collected hundreds if not hundreds of thousands of special little bow ties off the meat they fed to the grinder. If you don't believe that, look at the two generations worth of people in society today that were told they needed college degrees, went and got one and are working jobs that pay less than their dropout friends that went to trade schools make. The shit you're being told today is being told to you today bc it would have benefitted the person telling you what they're telling you. Just like when my freshman science teacher was telling us to go to the most prestigious school that will accept you for what you're going to school to learn. That department of the school could totally suck, but if the people looking to hire you don't recognize the school you went to it may as well be some random community college in their eyes. That might be a bad example bc that's even more true today, but it's also true that if you fail to get into a a major school you shouldn't go to college just to go to college. Go find some entry level job at a company in the field you want to work in and then they'll pay for you to go to school and you won't end up being in debt for the rest of your life. Even some fast food places will pay for you to go to school these days, but don't do it through them bc you have to work for them for X number of years or you still get stuck paying for it. One of the benefits of pursuing a degree in that manner is you are far more likely to be accepted, even if its a school that denied you in the past. They're going to listen to an employer asking them to educate their employee far faster than they're going to listen to a letter of recommendation from random teacher.

I know you didn't really play Pokemon but that's exactly why I don't play the new ones. they aren't any more fun than the og ones, and they obviously don't put any love into the new high budget releases, so that is also why people are turning to indie games like palworld in my mind
@dumpmail-xz2qp11 ай бұрын
I think the problem is the money. Its the big publishers and corporations that have it and also make decisions that affect the poor development of the games. For example, crunch deadlines that force devs to rush the game into the market. Forced elements and censorship, limiting creativity to appeal the standard audience with the motto, if it sells, why change it? The most simple thing we can do is directly support devs who are making their own unique games. there are forums, funding websites and my favorite, the itch web that's full of interesting unique items.... ignore the adult section though

I feel like the major problem with open world games is that the majority of them are essentially just a sandbox with a checklist of missions to do, with no sense of discovery. That's where Elden Ring really differentiated itself imo. You don't just walk out into the game with a million quest markers everywhere, the game is completely designed around and rewards player curiosity from exploration.

Funnily, also being part of gen Z, this is also why I like retro games before my existence came into being. Most of them were gameplay first, with quality or at the very least interesting mechanics and structure, with a nice splash of either goofy or well written story just because. In comparison AAA games is like that sandwich you get at that fancy restaurant your forced to go to and you know what it's gonna taste like garbage, but that's all they have! That'll be 65.00 please, just for the sandwich. Indie and retro games are like making your own sandwich with your own ingredients or appreciating a truly classic sandwich everyone loves, like PB and J or a BLT.

So tired of the narrative that games suck. Companies suck, mega-corps suck. Passionate people who make games they themselves actually want to play (unsurprisingly) make good games. PLAY INDIE GAMES! Stop supporting exploitative, "engagement" forcing companies.

Yeah ering and bg3 for me even armored core 6, indie games come up with great concepts and really quality gameloops but its hard for indie devs to be as ambisious as ering and bg3 which is why aaa has its place, imo his ering crypt arguments is the usual eh the same argument can be said for skyrim or any other large openworld game, crypts felt as repetitive as nordic tombs or dwarvish dungeons and yet skyrim is still heralded as legendary

Do other Millenials actually shit on Gen-Z? We were shat on so much by Boomers that I think many of us know better than that, but maybe it's because I have Zoomer siblings and they make me proud.
I would tend to agree that zoomer ADHD could help us move away fromthe ever growing trend of unskippable forced walk and chats in games. QUIT making cutscenes into boring gameplay. I don't mind having moments without a ton of action like say the beginning of Half Life 1 where you can at least still run around the environment and mess around with things during like early parts of the game, but the unskippable slow walk and chat stuff has gotta go. It honestly makes some games just impossible to replay. There's a ton of modern AAA games I'd love to replay but I'm just not trying to go through all of the forced walk and chats again.
