Yeah, I always found it interesting how the fans tend to see and write Beverly and Will's other coworkers as trusted friends and confidantes, because I see them as a bunch of jerks who rely on Will for his expertise but fail to treat him with a basic level of respect. Exception Alana, of course. Like when they we're talking about who the middle child or only child was and they said something rude about Will, who was standing in the corner not participating in the conversation by choice, I just imagine him snapping at them like "and you wonder why I don't come to pub trivia". Many people see this as friendly banter, but Will's lack of participation makes it feel very one-sided.

She lost me when she implied she was the scholarly buzzard waiting for him to die so she could write the definitive paper on his psyche. It made her closeness to him seem more like surveillance than friendship, and her protection of him came off possessive--she didn't want anyone else getting scraps. She bailed the instant it got real, she robbed him of her trust and of his anchor to reality, she isolated him from people who believed him, she gave *herself* the title of best friend and confidant without earning the roles. She always seemed less upset about what had happened to Will than how bad or mistaken or guilty it made *her* feel. When she was walking around his house and playing pet sitter, I was like "ok you hooked up with his man and now you're stealing his dogs when he's in prison?" LOL yeah by then my biases were paying rent. I'm not arguing that the script or direction meant to tend that way, but they did make a point over and over that everybody involved was passionate about a career that drew narcissists, sociopaths, psychopaths. So many subtle details about Hannibal were intentional and designed to emphasize the narrative. So I was never quite able to dismiss the possibility Alana was Chilton or Freddie but less honest about it, with more self-control, a smoother approach, and a case of denial.
