@@Nobody-xe7si I agree that Gukesh is the favorite. And agree with the question "who can dislike Ding?" My comment is in response to what he said at 38:22 ... I'm talking about people who actually dislike him, not people who support Gukesh. It's perfectly fine to support whoever you like.
@prcbras2 ай бұрын
Someone disliking Ding is a red flag. Why would anyone dislike him? He just minds his business and doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Always genuine, has the maturity of a weathered old man but also has the innocence of a child. He's one of the most likable players. I'd say him and Pia are in a tier of their own as far as being the most likable.
@Melvinstar-k9f2 ай бұрын
@@prcbras Exactly, he's done nothing to hurt anyone and is generally very respectful to his opponents. But somehow people just feel the need to say things like "he's the most undeserving world champion", "he acts and talks like a robot".. If I were betting some meaningful sum on this match I would have to account for Ding's peak strength. Ding's problems are all in his mind. Something like that can snap back in to alignment at the right moment. Then the question is, how does Gukesh fare against Ding playing at his best? Can he hold draws? Can he win against THAT version? If I can't be confident in that matchup I can't be confident making a wager. Gukesh is 18 years old. He can flake. You don't know.

One thing I think few new to chess knows is that Carlsen actually withdrew from the first candidates he was qualified to enter (2012, he qualified by rating). The reasoning was that he was too young, could possibly be too much pressure.

I knew
@Sai-qz9nk2 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, there was also some disagreement from Magnus's team about the changes to the Candidates format. Quote from his letter to FIDE in 2010: "Reigning champion privileges, the long (five year) span of the cycle, changes made during the cycle resulting in a new format (Candidates) that no World Champion has had to go through since Kasparov, puzzling ranking criteria as well as the shallow ceaseless match-after-match concept are all less than satisfactory in my opinion." He's certainly been consistent and vocal since the very beginning about his displeasure with the system in place to determine the World Champion.

How does this sound ???? Ding vs Gukesh (14 Match WCC): Match1: Ding Wins after Gukesh blunders a drawish position due to WCC pressure and the kind of attention he gets. Score: 1-0 Match 2-5: Dull Draws (Gukesh wants to settle down, so goes bookish, Ding ,fully aware of not being his best, plays it absolute safe) Score: 3-2 Match 6: Gukesh is now fully equipped with the situation and starts playing aggressive chess, but Ding holds him somehow. Score: 3.5-2.5 Match 7: Both play to a draw, midway. Score: 4-3 Match 8: Law of averages catch up with Ding, and he loses with some poor play. Scores level at: 4-4 Match 9-10: Gukesh goes on his absolute best, puts Ding under severe pressure, and manages to outplay him in both. Scores: 4-6. History calling .... Match 11: Ding comes back with a bang, plays an incredible game at 3000 elo level that Gukesh has no answers to: Score: 5-6 Match 12: Both players are now exhausted, and settle for a draw. Score: 5.5-6.5 Match 13: Gukesh prepares to go for a draw even before the 1st move, but Ding doesn't relent, match goes on for 100+ moves, Ding blunders at the fag end after a 7 hr play, and Gukesh wins. Final Score: 5.5-7.5 And, Gukesh becomes the youngest WCC, and is all set to meet either Nordirbek or Arjun for the next WCC in 2026 !!

Speaking for myself and I'm sure most others, it is difficult to understand how much better a Super GM is than an average decent player. It's like imagining in what ways is an F1 driver better than an average driver. Of course they are but how? Topics would be mentioned like pattern recognition, games memorized, the ability to evaluate...etc. But if Take Take Take could do a video on very specific details that would help us mere mortals understand even more about how and in what ways these players are so good it would, I believe, help spectators of the sport to mentally elevate them even more.
