J the game isnt being developed by portkey games... its literally first line of its wikipedia page ... It will be published under that tag but certanly not developed like the mobile games In fact if u look up portkey games they dont develop games at all its just a label for any wizarding world game. ... ill leave the quote "Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming action role-playing game, developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment under its Portkey Games label." Avalanche software is much better known and established studio for big projects like this being the ones behind disney infinity. I know this comment may come off as me being mad. its just misinformation comparing anything this game can become to any other portkey projects as they are entirely unrelated.. and not giving credit to the actual team at avalanche for thei re work

My thought on why the main character was only now joining Hogwarts in their 5th year is because they were homeschooled, or maybe they transferred from another school. Maybe something happened to their parents so they couldn't be homeschooled anymore, or had to move to Scotland or England to live with family and so had to switch.

I'm not sure, in the trailers they said you unlock the room of requirement in order to 'catch up with your fellow students'. If homeschooled or from a different school, they wouldn't have to play catch up to begin with.

Usually Official Canon is considered in a few parts: Primary canon: The main body of work from the author, in this case the main series books. Secondary canon: Supplementary works from the author (I would classify Cursed Child as secondary canon as it came after the main series and is a world expansion) same with the movie adaptations, Fantastic Beasts and Pottermore articles. Tertiary Canon: This consists of works not from the original author, third party sources, either with or without the authors blessing in regards to it's canonicity. If there is an event, piece of information, or anything else, in which two sources of canon conflict, the secondary canon takes precedence over tertiary canon and primary takes precedence over secondary. The Cursed Child is considered to be Secondary Canon, which means that if something in the Cursed Child contradicts something in the main series books the main series books take precedence, so yes you are allowed to consider much of the Cursed Child as non-canon because Primary canon takes precedence in cases of conflict. All of this is to say, Hogwarts legacy would fit under Tertiary Canon, and could be considered canon as long as it's not contradicted by secondary or primary canon. If something in Hogwarts Legacy makes a decision that Rowling or others who have been given the approval to speak with the voice of the wizarding world universe don't approve of, they can create a piece of secondary canon to establish precedence over that particular aspect of the worlds lore. The above is for Official Canon, there's also Head Canon/Personal Canon, what you consider to be canon, it's very lose and you can consider whatever you wish to be canon to you, but others may consider other pieces in their head canon, Official Canon is meant to be an objective canon following the above.

Yeah this reminds me of Star Wars legends and loved how that worked. The old Harry Potter games had a lot of new lore just through the chocolate frog cards so I’m gonna assume that everything in this game is canon as long as it doesn’t mess with everything else. Like the biggest thing with this game and even Hogwarts mystery is more what house your character was in and the house cup and quidditch cup ending at the year for canonocity

Than movie adaptations are tertiary cannon, they weren't made by JK, even the scenario but fantastic beasts are secondary since JK wrote the scenario and is the director ;)

I love the elder scrolls approach to the canon state of player involvement in games. The titular Elder Scrolls themselves are used as tools for prophecy or history. They are what the fabric of reality is written on and there is an elder scroll for every possible future. So every time you the player create a new character in a vanilla elder scrolls game, there canonically is an elder scroll that describes that specific character you made, and all the actions you'll take in the imperial archives. So all characters you make in skyrim are canon. This is definitely not how it's gonna work for hogwarts legacy but it's a really fun solution regardless.

And then there's even things like dragon breaks to make contrary choices all have happened through history, like with the warp in the west giving four different outcomes that all happened despite contradicting one another. Such good lore and world building in TES that imo few IPs have come close to competing with

The plot device of an unreliable narrator is also something that makes elder scrolls lore so interesting and filled with detail. Like real life history, many events are debated.

It’s not like the films thus far have been so fantastic, but the whole lead up was for the ultimate fight between Grindelwald and Dumbledore. And if we don’t even get that, what was it all for? And to leave Newt and Tina‘s relationship unsolved? It just all feels so incomplete.

Nah, it's almost always a terrible decision (in terms of consequences and canonicity) when pre-established characters learn something from player's character. Nothing in Legacy should affect Harry's or Newt's stories in any way. Legacy should be only an exploration of past, it's main (and only, in regards to the whole Wizarding World) goal should be world-building. Nothing else.

@@gemink7939 Making player choices canon makes any subsequent sequels (that don't involve importing such choices as is the case in Dragon's Age games for example) shaky at their foundation and choosing to implement one "true ending" invalidates any playthrough that ends differently. If PC can choose to go Dark Magic route but overall ending is the same it'll also mean that the choice wasn't really as important as we believed.

I love the idea that your character is the first person to (re)discover ancient magic that turns out to be a patronus or something like that, which then becomes RELATIVELY mainstream in the OG books/movies canon because your character discovered it a hundred years previous in the timeline

At this point I've given up on the debate of what is and isn't canon in the HP universe. The books are easy, and the movies to some extent, but everything else I just treat as an extra interpretation of the original works. Currently the tiktok Marauders fandom has a better defined canon than most new official HP releases

I would definitely consider Hogwarts Mystery canon, its a narrative driven story that doesn't conflict existing canon (mostly). Like the quidditch storyline is vague and doesn't make a bunch of sense, and some of the holiday events are a bit wonky but other than that it doesn't seem different than Hogwarts Legacy considering the story can vary based on player decisions.

it will depend on what we can actually achieve in the game. If we really save the world it would be strange that we never hear about that ever after in the other stories (although it could be) but if the ending doesn't really change anything at all then it should be rather advertised as a life simulation game instead of an adventure/save the world kind of thing. Personally I wouldn't mind a game that just lets you play from school year 1-7 without any major world saving plots and just adventuring through the castle, trying to learn and master the exams and then have your "what kind of profession will you get depending of your school results" but not many others would enjoy that I guess xD

Hogwarts Mystery is Canon and we face this same issue. The best I can tell is that being in Slytherin is the canon house, and the canon way to refer to the player character is as Jacob's Sibling. Also, the books and movies are just separate canons. Book canon is primary, movie canon is secondary. My personal headcanon about Cursed Child is that it's a literal play in the movies' canon, one in which the playwright takes tremendous liberties and dramatic flourishes while writing about these publicly known figures.

Just realized I didn't give my rationale as to why Slytherin is your canonical house in Hogwarts Mystery. It's because your house is all but guaranteed to win the house cup each year, and Slytherin wins it in the years leading up to Harry attending. So it's been retroactively established that those Slytherin wins were due to Jacob's Sibling.

my personal head canon for why Dumbledore was teaching defence against the dark arts in the crimes of grindelwald is that he was covering for the DATDA teacher, who was too ill to teach that day and so, seeing as Dumbledore is arguably the greatest wizard of all time - very talented - he decided to help out and cover the lesson, in a similar way Snape did for Lupin in prisoner

I think they will, Zaslav has stated he wants to focus on proven IPs, and mentioned the Wizarding World/Harry Potter by name. I think we’ll see at least one more Fantastic Beasts movie to finish the story and then probably a TV show either based on the books, pr around the Founders or Marauders.

@@JacobButter But Voldy's horcruxes got destroyed, all of them. The One ring was made to be so desired that no creature could destroyed. And it was more so, the closer you got to the one place it could be destroyed - Mount Doom. Even Frodo couldn't resist the Ring there and couldn't destroyed. The Ring fell only by accident, because Gollum happened to be there at the same time. Genius plan by Sauron. While Voldemort brute forced his way by making just a lot of Horcruxes. Didn't thought too much about how to actually make them indestructible, or what objects to use, just used some artifacts that didn't add to the actual Horcrux.

Another thing to think about is in the achievements of the game, one of them says to “obtain a deathly hallow” (most likely it’ll be the elder wand since that’s the only one we don’t really know the full path on) but it’ll definitely be interesting to see how they handle the story of such an important item like that.

Maybe it will be considered as kinda a tale, a bit like that of the three brothers you know, based on events that are considered real in the canon, but still a story that wizard would read in a book or something. That would allow developers to have more freedom in the creative processed while still being canon.

I would love the idea that the journal, that Mrs. Weasly and the teachers prepared for you, would be the source of the marauders map. I mean, you have a minimap, can track questgivers.. would make sense if the journal will be demolished at one time and the map part will be the pergament the Marauders create the map of..

Hopefully it won't involve time turners a lot because every time they are involved, the plot and world building get dicey. Also, time travel and the time turners are never explained in that much detail, so maybe there are larger, overarching rules to them that we just aren't aware of that make all of the seeming inconsistencies actually be consistent.

Im guessing the ancient magic might be used to explain tutorial style hints of some hidden doors and stuff Because otherwise you would have no reason to do the awesome stuff and instead you just play a school simulator This might be even used as a motive to attack you if the bad guys find out about how special you are Also helps to explain why you have the room of requirement as your special room unlike other students

I think sequels to games like this can keep going back a couple hundred years to make sure that there is enough time between to limit plot holes by eliminating a lot of known characters for age reasons and there is enough unknown time that our imaginations can fill in the gaps. Also we can have games centered around other wizarding schools

I fully agree that the game will be canon, as they have delved into the books and films many many times, consulting jk's team to ensure that anything they explore, touch or play with remains authentic. Based off of what i've seen thus far, they have done a phenomenal job. I am most excited to explore the castle, its grounds and the world, ready to find all the secrets and solve all its puzzles. The castle looks amazing, so real. I've wished I was a student like the main characters of the books for ages, and now, to be able to walk it at my own pace.....its going to be awesome.

WB Discovery has made the official announcement. Fantastic Beasts is cancelled. We won't get the epic duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. However, they did say they would focus on Harry Potter itself, so we might get a series remake.

A cool little thing (on the No-Maj/Muggle side of the world in 1893) could be even a passing reference to the World Expo/Fair in Chicago that year. Like, if a Muggle when the character is in London could reference it, or maybe a news clipping. For all we know, wizards would be interested potentially because of the technology unveiled at it.

I have a Hogwarts Legacy theory of my own to try out. Solomon Sallow was responsible for the Goblin attack that nearly killed Anne. He resented that he had been forced to care for Sebastian and Anne. He resented having to care for Anne even more because she was weak. I think that he was tired of the burden of caring for someone that he thought would be dead soon anyway. It is rumored that Solomon is no longer an Auror because he used dark magic. It seems to me that Solomon's connection to dark magic was how he somehow made a deal with the goblins. I do not think that Solomon was mad because Sebastian used dark magic. He was mad that Anne was still alive. A real parent would have thanked Sebastian for saving Anne's life and then taught Sebastian that there are better ways of solving your problems than using dark magic. I would have liked to have seen what would have happened if the main character would have killed the goblin with ancient magic. Let's face it. There is only one Harry Potter character that I hate more than Solomon and I think we all know who I am talking about. HEM! HEM!

Read the third book again. It never says that you can’t affect your own past in fact McGonagall told Hermione that she can only safely travel a few hours into the past (safely which means it is dangerous not impossible to travel farther) and to never interact with your past self as wizards have accidentally killed or were killed by their past selves. Why do people ignore this?

Another way I've seen videogames handle canon when the player is free to choose things is some of the smaller details weren't important enough to be remembered through history... in one of the Elder Scrolls games you can read in game books about the events of other games & an "unknown hero" who saved the world..... the only events that definitely happened are ones that would happen regardless of player's choices...

Question/video idea: Was baby harry potter alone in his ruined house for 24 hours? His parents were killed before a one year-old‘s bedtime so like seven in the evening? Interestingly enough, the video games that were released when the movies were coming out do offer some canon, because they'd need to run things by J.K. Rowling. For instance, people often chide the games for adding a spell called Flipendo (aka the Knockback Jinx) that doesn't appear in the books or movies, at least not by that name. In reality, it was a spell provided by the author for the game devs to use as a simple pushing spell that first years at Hogwarts learn. (The devs were also provided with Alohomora, Wingardium Leviosa, Lumos, and Incendio as other first year spells.) Check out Flandrew's interview with Harry Potter PC game developer Christo Vuchetich! And that's not forgetting how the content of the 101 Wizard Cards premiered with the games, also written by J.K. Rowling.

I think we should be open to new visuals in this video game. Like wizarding fashion and how certain magical creatures and beings look like. I mean I always imagined nifflers to look more like dogs and the movie shows them to look more like platypuses. So I'm really looking forward to this game!
