I had to ride about 30 Kay’s on a flat tyre one day on my crm250. I did it no problem, sitting over the back wheel and staying on the side of the bitumen on the dirt. I probably got up to about 80kph at the most (promise of a swimming pool and beer at the destination probably got me through too).

If you ever replicate it for some reason, it would be interesting to mount cameras to capture a view of the tires and what kind of flex/roll there is on the rim while turning, etc. I always carry pump and patch kit but nice knowing might be able to limp to a more optimal or safer location for fixing a flat than I would have thought previously.

Hello Mark; Amazing test on the DR650 with the no air in the tyres; so you can ride it but I would prefer a low speed to ensure you get out of the shit if you are in one. Having a Power Source these days seems the go; Thanks and Hello Naomi .... David.....Triumph Street Scrambler.....

THAT is why i only use D606 front and rear 😎👍 tried MT21 front and got a flat 🤬 tried to ride it a short distance and NO BULL came of the rim in about 20-30 mtrs 🤬🤬 will NEVER use a MT21 EVER AGAIN . also a mate had mt21 on front of a KLR and got a flat at 80ks , caused a crash and totaled his bike and put him in hospital 🥺😥 keep up the good work Mark and keep riding safe-ish 😉🍺

I have ridden 50 ks home on flat rear at 80 Kph,Bridgestone factory tyre on Drz,but would not attempt what you did with a dead flat front tyre that was impressive,I am assuming you did have rim locks fitted Mark

If i remember correctly you don't have bead locks, doesn't look like the tyre spun at all. Im running motoz on my dr , great tyres but to expensive. I will be going back to the 606 rear. Cheers Mark.

The danger here is speed. Speed + flex = heat. A low tire is flexing more than designed an creating lots of heat. At low speed it can dissipate that heat faster than it produces it. But there is a speed where the tire starts producing heat faster than it can dissipate it. The tire heats up, gets soft from that heat an fails. That is essentially what a tires speed rating is. That speed goes down as air pressure goes down. We see the consequences of this most often when tires blow out on large trucks on the highway. Truck drivers using a club to check air pressure. Tire still feels stiff but is under inflated. Tire gets up to speed, overheats an explodes. A flat bike tire is the same. Its stiff cold. But as you start moving, the flex creates heat an the tire gets softer. The softer tire flexes more, creating more heat an the tire gets even softer. Up to around 30? KPH, a really stiff tire can dissipate the heat faster than its producing it. Somewhere above that, heat will start building in the tire, softening it an eventually cause a cascade heat failure. If you really want to test how a tire is handling being flat, monitor its temperature. But in the real world, just ride very slowly if you have to ride on a flat. This is one case where slow does win the race.

I’ve never run anything other than 606s on my DR and always debate trying something else when I buy new ones. This isn’t helping me venture out on something different. Thanks!

If you don't have a lot of pavement and you are on the dirt most of the way out you can add 6 to 8 heavy duty zip ties on the tires and wheels and they hold the tires extremely well.
