Have you ever wondered how accurate FUEL economy ratings on MOTORCYCLES are? Yea, me either, but in today's video we are going to put the MPG to the test. Given the exact amount of fuel needed can my MT10 make to it and from a burger joint for a lunch run? Let's find out...or let's just walk the bike. We'll have to see what happens!

Last year, i bought my MT-09 a couple of weeks before the fuel shortage happened here in Georgia. I got to find out the hard way how to conserve fuel when i rode up to the mountains and there was no gas! I had to take it real easy on the way back, which, on an MT-09, is not easy! I made it with enough fumes to spare to get to the gas station down the hill from me when they got gas. Fun time!

Pulling the clutch in downhill doesn't equal to "no gas needed" since the engine has to idle with gas, just put highest gear with no throttle and that will be "no gas needed" since the rear wheel will spin the engine without gas needed. I'd love to see more motorcycle tested and maybe have a top 10 of best motorcycle mileage test💯

You're still adding drag to the drivetrain with the motor slowing the bike down over time, yes it's "idling" but you'll have to get back on the gas sooner due to it slowing faster.
@williamnewkirk6316
@williamnewkirk6316 2 жыл бұрын
Due to the low weight of bikes bs cars, the engine braking of the bike will slow it dramatically if you go no throttle downhill. Clutch in and kill the motor, using the kill switch, not the key. When it's time to go, turn the kill switch back on, and restart. This, of course, is not the safest option, as you need to be able to get out of the way of that cell-phone addicted teenager or soccer mom. Totally different bike, my 2020 Ninja 650 averages nearly 60 mpg, higher if I stay on the highway. And it's still plenty of fun. For my old ass anyway.

OC: I get close to my fuel estimates most of the time. 2015 Triumph Bonneville (39-42 MPG observed in 'city' riding, 46 being the combined EPA estimate) and 2020 Ducati Monster 821 (42 MPG was my best, which is around the 43 MPG EPA/magazine estimate). Worst gas mileage on the monster was 28, worst on the Bonneville with a Terrible tune was 25 MPG. I track the mileage out of curiosity and as a maintenance indicator. Riding the same area lets me get a base line, so if something is wrong the mileage will change. And no, you didn't cheat. Those are things I have done when my low fuel light was on 😅

Well. I mean. My MT-03 made it from Harking Heights, Texas to Amarillo, Texas getting 53.1 MPG. And, we have crazy winds here. So. It wasn't bad. 460 miles and 53.1 MPG. Manufacturer states 54 MPG. So, pretty good. I got caught in a thunderstorm in Abilene, Texas. Which sucked. (This was on April 1, 2022 at 10 PM.) I got pelted with heavy rain and some hail. Bike took zero damage and handles the wet roads well. (Although, it needs a serious bath now.) Stayed at a rest stop overnight due to the storms. Almoat had rhe bike stolen while I was asleep on a bench. (I got really tired as I had left at 3 AM on April 1, 2022 to go get the bike. Left the rest stop April 2, 2022. I hit two birds. One was a killdeer and the other was a buzzard. Took the buzzard to the left hand (thank the heavens for golves) and it almost knocked the bike unstable at 55 MPH. The killdeer ate my knee. I hate riding pants and just wore jeans. 😒 So, my knee is bruised. I hit the killdeer at 94 MPH. Ouch! Barely missed a dead deer in the road between Clarendon, Texas and Amarillo, Texas on 287. That was fun. Nearly wrecked in Paducah, Texas due to a jackass that likes to brake check. Froze my ass off at night. It was quite the adventure. I enjoyed it. 😉

I was running a 2014 Honda CB1100 (weight about 550lbs, 75HP) about 2500 miles in four days and was in the middle of nowhere in Montana. I got lost a couple times, so I’d shut the bike off thinking I was saving gas… fuel tank on that bike isn’t that big. I usually keep track of the mileage in my head. Average distance it can cover before I start really looking for a gas station is about 125 miles. When I looked up the distances according the my GPS, the numbers didn’t jibe. My commute to work was 60 miles a day. Gas mileage always spot on. The weight makes a difference in the fuel economy depending on how many times you stop/start. Spending a day in traffic can seriously bog your mileage down.

Hi... Thanks for the video. How about run the bike for a week, performing day to day tasks as normal and filling up the car with no restrictions and see how much gas you use, economy and cost. Do the same for the production vehicle which l am guessing is some sort of Nissan (Sunny/Sentra/Sylphy) which may have a fuel capacity of 2L or slightly less or more depending on the version and then see how they all do and noting differences and trying to allow for differences such as weight and passenger and carry capacity. There was a journalist who did this comparison in South Africa some years ago. If l remember correctly, he said he liked the fact that he was saving about 45 minutes a day in traffic, fuel was much cheaper but there were other issues like if you have kids and when the weather turns foul. Overall he said a bike is still worth running despite some negatives. Of course there is the bonus of just riding a bike and seeing others stranded as you lane split between them, always brings smiles to my face. l have feeling bikes are not as efficient as the cars, especially the bigger capacity bikes but as a bike rider l would be happy to see bikes prevail.

My 1983 Suzuki GR650 Tempter is factory rated at 66 mpg, but my 40 year old bike only gets 45.6 mpg in city driving. That could be my inexperience, that nasty Portland traffic, the old age of the bike - but its probably because in 1983 they used real gas not 10% ethanol. That 17% reduction in fuel energy makes a big difference in my little twin. You can't run the carbs as lean as they had them set by the factory back 40 years ago.

OC: I found a source that says my '06 R1200RT should get 44.7 MPG. I bought mine in 2018 and after the first 10 months I rode 5791 miles using 131.7 gallons for ... 43.7 MPG. Depending on the routes I took I stretched it out to the low 50s or dropped it to the low 40s. My car was mid 20s and my van (Chevy Express) well, mileage was age, it wouldn't have a learners permit. Yes, I love a spreadsheet and playing with numbers. All that said, I don't watch the gauge when riding, until I get down to 25-30 miles to empty. At that point, the range drops about 2 miles for every one driven. At least the couple of times I've done it. I'd be interested to see how much fuel you can pack in the tank. The same source I got the mileage from says the tank hold 7.1 gallons (which sounds about the same as the manual) Even running it bone dry (under 10 miles range left) I have never been able to get more than 5.6 gallons to the top. Did it twice. I'd like to see a few months of "normal" riding mileage, for everyone, and then compare those average to the number from the manufactures. See who gets the better percentages.

Okay so with this from mavis in Roswell which I’ve seen in the videos is near the shop, it’s about 9.2 miles for the Culver’s near wood stock (assuming that’s tue Culver’s you went to) so total round trip is about 18.4 and it gets 30 estimated mpg with a full 4.5 gal tank, with taking that into account they gave you .53 gal, or roughly 15.9 miles since it was roughly half a gallon. That means in reserves you’d have to have .012th of a tank left to get to where you’re going.

Harley specs says my StreetBob is good for 35/44mpg. What I have always ridden, is 42/49mpg. Granted, I did add a Stage 1 intake at the time of purchase, but did no MAP changes or other tuning.

OC: I'm kinda the same way on my FZ-09. There's days where I couldn't care less about MPG, it's about SPG (smiles per gallon). Then I have days where I know I need to take the shittier highway with more traffic because it's 3 miles shorter and forces me to do the speed limit or only slightly over. I've got like a 3.5gal tank and I can do about 120 miles to the tank on a normal day, 100 or less if I'm hooning it. I'm sure I could get more but I just have too much fun on it lol.

OC: CBR650R ~4-5L/100km on highways, I was told I would get 5 at the dealership when I bought it. It gets ~8-9L/100km if you leave it in a low gear all the time though.

I find fuel economy an important item in my bikes abilities. With a 3.6 gallon tank and riding in some rural areas that can present 200 mile plus distances after hours. I really need to know exactly how far I can go on a tank under normal conditions. My 2022 MT09 will give 60 mpg if I am careful. When going normal without economic operation a consideration the MT09 as a rule delivers around 48 mpg.

MT bikes are well known to have bad mpg. I do care about mpg but also tank size. A lot of bikes need to be refuled around 120 miles. That gets annoying if you do a lot of trips or just don't want to go to the pump all of the time. I often check out the mpg in fuelly and find out the tank size to see how far the bike can go.

Good video, but that is brutal mileage. I’ve never gotten any less than 40mpg on any of my bikes (except for track days). I typically see upwards of 60mpg when going on a bike trip. Heck, I even get close to 40mpg on my modded Volkswagen GTI (still over 30 when hard on the throttle).

Low to mid 50’s with my Moto Guzzi, doesn’t change much city or highway, Low 40’s to mid 50’s with the K1200GT, city versus highway does have a big impact. And for me mpg does matter to plan gas stops when touring

I was super surprised with my z125 that riding essentially full throttle everywhere, it still gets roughly 90mpg. If I was really really conservative on the throttle and I didn't live in an area that is all hills, I bet that I could get 110 but 90 is perfect. Fill it up every 100 miles and I keep track of my odometer really easily that way for maintenance purposes.

Guess everyone better start switching to ceramic bearings, pulling their rear brake system off and one of the front rotors to save on rolling resistance 😆😅🥴. Might not be much fun to push it but might improve mpg....lol.

pulling in the clutch when going downhill does NOT save fuel compared to engine braking clutch in the engine has to inject fuel to maintain idle whereas regular closed throttle downhill uses engine braking to turn the engine and should not need to inject any fuel to maintain the engine turning

I average 54mpg on my 21 Ninja 400 and I don’t ride super economical. I know others are getting higher on the same bike but it’s still good for me. It seems that tank size is determined by fuel economy because almost all bikes (modern) will get roughly the same overall range per tank.

I have bad back, shoulders, and knees I'm worried I can't ride one. I need to find one to sit on. My shrink and wife are in agreement that I should get one! Woohoo that battle is half over, still have to convince my Momma:( . I definitely don't want the new teal wheels though. I'd love to find a 21. I already have the loan, just gotta find it.

I bought a brand new 2021 MT10 a year ago in April 2021 and just sold it in February of 2022. I didn’t even have the MT10 for a year and only put 4,500 miles on it. I got rid of it mainly because it was a waste of money to buy a brand new bike and I wanted to get the majority of my money back while I still could. I would’ve sold the MT10 anyways because of the awful gas mileage though. When I would go out riding with people I literally had to get gas every couple hours and that was really annoying having to get gas 2 or sometimes even 3 times a day if I went riding for more than a couple hours. I absolutely loved the MT10 it was amazing but the gas mileage was beyond awful. I got around 20mpg the way I rode the MT10 it’s rated at 30mpg.
