He'll never die. At this point he's gained an immunity to everything and anything he could possibly encounter. Plus he's careful. But honestly I feel the same way you do. People like coyote are the reason why we know things are poisonous / venomous. I mean we already know now after thousands of years of evolution. But if Coyote Peterson lived thousands of years ago he would have been a pioneer of toxicology.

my aunt was bit by a brown recluse living in las vegas. she waited a few days to go to the hospital. She lost the ability to move the right side of her body and face. She was a cosmologist and was never able to recover and return to her profession. After a few years, she was still struggling mentally and physically and sadly, decided to take her own life. I would not wait to see what happens if you ever get bit by a brown recluse. I don't recall where she was bit or if that made a big difference in how it affected her brain and nervous system. Rest in Peace Alexis

If a spider is in your bathtub or blanket it either got there by accident or you haven't used it in a while. I live in rural Tennessee, I've seen several Recluses in my house. I can authoritatively say Coyote is right, they do not like people and will run away as soon as they notice you. My best advice if you're worried about Recluse Spiders? Keep your living space clean, avoid leaving laundry, shoes or bedding on the floor and use clear plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes for storage.

I've interacted with at least 4 brown recluses within the past year. Here's what I learned from them: 1. Brown recluses will most likely seek shelter in your home during heavy rains, especially flooding. 2. Brown recluses aren't afraid of the light. 3. Brown recluses aren't afraid of you. 4. Brown recluses will happily walk across your computer monitor while you are using it. 5. Brown recluses will happily crawl into your keyboard while you're typing on it. 6. Brown recluses simply don't care where you are and what you are doing. 7. Brown recluses generally walk in S-curves at constant speed just like ants. 8. Brown recluses have no problem crawling up slippery vertical surfaces. 9. Brown recluses are difficult to smash because their body is quite hard compared to most spiders. 10. Brown recluses usually curl into a tiny solid sphere if you attempt to smash it. This sphere is generally small enough to fit between the treads of your shoe, which allows the spider to roll away (drop away) and escape from sight. 3 of the 4 brown recluses I interacted with crawled into a ball and survived being smashed by my shoes. This is because, as a tiny ball, the spider is solid enough to withstand the pressure of rubber of my shoes. I had to use a high voltage mosquito zapper to kill one and hard plastic to properly crush the others. Sorry spider-lovers, I'm not trying to be cruel, I just don't want to go to bed with one. 11. Finally, the easiest way to identify a brown recluse is the violin shape in combination with its care-free movement, they just don't care if they're in your personal space.

I appreciate this! Because you've come across this spider many times, I have to ask you about this constant ant-like speed you mentioned. I think I've also come across these spiders, but not so sure if they're a recluse or not, and one thing that might help me identify them is their movement, whenever I see them move they move very slowly, almost sluggish, but at a steady pase like you mentioned

I heard that the recluses venom doesn’t actually cause the skin rot, it’s the bacteria afterwards, which is why you gotta keep the bite wound clean Also storytime: one time I went outside smoking a bowl and I noticed a jumping spider on my aunts side view mirror, and i got close to ig just look at it, and it like turned its head to look back at me, so I had this thought to move side to side and it followed my movement and I was like atleast a foot away, then I got a twig and put it like 5 inches away from it and it jumped onto the twig and I set it in the grass, what a great encounter haha

Your loving nature towards all creatures great and small is heart-warming. Thank you for this video. I had hundreds of these living in my cabin when I was little and for four years of sleeping on the floor they didn't bother me, but I accidentally rolled over one one time and it bit me, but I put charcoal on the bite and the bite dried right out. I was fine. I felt more bad for hurting the spider than angry tbh. I wish more people understood they're more scared of us at the end of the day. Look how small they are. You should come to Louisiana sometime. People down here are...unusual. By the time I was seven years old I knew how to safely catch and handle copperheads and cottonmouth moccasin snakes, with nothing more than a stick, both highly venomous. And do it without harming the snake. In the 50 years since I have long lost count of the number of venomous snakes I've caught and relocated to places where they wouldn't be in danger from humans. The kid who first taught me how to safely catch and handle venomous snakes ended up getting graduate degrees in herpetology and zoology and worked to retirement at the Audobon Zoo in New Orleans. Me and my little cohort of Cajun ragamuffins who grew up playing in the canals and bayous of southern Louisiana, we could hardly see a small critter pass without trying to catch it by hand. We caught moccasins and giant alligator snappers and huge bullfrogs and even those creepy big water bugs that will bite hell out of you if you let them (I think that Coyote Peterson gets bitten by one in an episode.) I actually had mantises and recluses and big wolf spiders I kept in large pickle jars and would feed them crickets and the like. That practice ended when one of them (one of the recluses) escaped and wound up in my mom's clothes. Or at least she assumed I was the source of the critter, and to be fair it was probably one of my escapees. It bit her on the heel of her hand when she picked up a shirt to hang it up and unknowingly squeezed it. I remember that it would not turn lose and remained stuck with its fangs embedded, hanging from her palm until I plucked it off her (and tossed it straight into the toilet -- sorry) and her hand ended up swelling so much that it looked like one of Mickey Mouse's gloves, fingers the size of sausages. She never got a necrotic pus-hole, thankfully, but she said it was quite painful for a day or two. Still my mom was a Louisiana mom through-and-through. The incident only lead to a minor change to the rules of the house: critters were okay but nothing venomous. Our grandparents also started us on 7-Up mixed with burgundy wine around the age of 6, but that's another Cajun story.

In the late 80s, I worked at Spider Pharm in Arizona. One of my favorite spiders to collect was the Loxosceles deserta, which you show. I could get around a hundred adult spiders from a single packrat burrow. You could pick one up by the back legs and it would just wait for you to drop it into a vial. As long as you taped up you were perfectly safe from them. What worried me was coming across snakes, scorpions, and centipedes.

this helps a lot, actually. as a neurodivergent nerd this kind of stuff really lets me know more about the topic and every day i'm learning more on how to deal with bugs and spiders, like this. i've often been told not to pick up random spiders, (which is insanely fair), but normally concerned people talk about brown recluses. knowing how to easily identify them and be more careful is helpful, especially knowing about how spider bites normally happen, and knowing they aren't outwardly aggressive. people talk about spiders as very terrifying things, but they're mostly just little carnivores from what i've found. yeah, they bite, but so do snakes and tigers. hell, frogs are more poisonous than a lot of spiders.

Seeing as I am in an area that sees these very often I have to add one thing you need to add - The CA Brown Recluse is not so much found in ground crevices as it is found in wood piles and higher elevation (ie: off the ground a bit) crevices. Nearly all the recluses around here are typically wedged in wooden fences or piles of this/that in peoples yard. Thankfully it's apex predator also roams the same locations (wolf spider) so never kill the wolves if you see them. They are harmless and take out the bad guys in your yard en masse. Fun fact: Apparently ancient spider DNA that has been analyzed was most closely related to the recluse. In other words, it apparently is the modern spider that most closely resembles the prehistoric types. I always thought that would be the funnel web but I guess it's this guy.

Pretty sure this isn't accurate. Last I checked, it was a spider in SEA (perhaps even the giant huntsman, though I can't recall for certain) that was the most ancient-yet-still-living species of spider. It lacks a ton of the more modern adaptations and features that spiders would go on to evolve as the eons passed. You could be correct, I'm just saying, perhaps check again. Bc the spider I'm thinking of has remained essential unchanged for millions of years and is thought to be the oldest species still around that all others most likely branched off from.

A main identifier of the brown relcuse is their eye formation. They only have 6 eyes in 3 sets, the placement makes for a very distinguising marker. Additionally to their very small fangs, they also have fused chelicerae/jaws. They have to be directly on the skin and, in most cases, an outside force actually Has to press/squish them into the skin for the brown recluse to actually deliver a bite. Tiny fused jaws make us near impossible to bite. Most spiders are not aggressive and, at most, will react defensively. At least in the United States, our venomous spiders are also our most docile. If you don't know the species, I would recommend a cup and paper. Unless you're in Australia, then I would recommend praying perhaps.

The biggest issues I have with brown recluses is that they love to get in your shoes here near the swamps. And like you said the most dangerous part is them accidentally getting pushed down and biting defensively. Forget to check your shoes just once and woops, off to the hospital. It's been a big issue ever since covid since we've been in the house most of the time they have plenty of time to set up a whole house with a recliner and bed in there by the time we have to go out again.

My least favorite part handling a brown recluse is the fact they don’t want to get off your hand once you let them on 😂 I appreciate you mentioning that their venom affects people differently. For the vast majority of KNOWN bites, 90% are nothing more than a slight localized redness. Most of those “bites” we see are actually MRSA or staph and unfairly blamed on these guys. They are so misunderstood and unfortunately under studied and villainized. I suggest checking out Rick Vetter’s work if you want to know more. But these guys are awesome! Appreciate this video.

I've had the misfortune of being bitten by one while hiking (walking mostly) an overgrown trail in 2011. I had a black hole in my leg the size of a nickel. But I also had the misfortune of getting a poison oak rash on the exact same spot, from the same trip, so it's hard to tell which sent me to the ER three different times with two conflicting diagnoses, before being hospitalized due to the swelling. Miserable time and kept getting flare ups of blisters during the months-long healing process. It's a miracle I don't have a single scar left now. ((Important advice: if you're sensitive to poison oak, don't eat mango or cashews...))

I had a very similar experience. Resulted in that black hole in the back of my calf. Was really wild when that dead tissue fell out and left a relatively painless hole, and now I have a penny sized scar of really smooth skin about 8 years later. Luckily, my doctor almost immediately knew what it was. But apparently doctors often misdiagnose skin anthrax as brown recluse bites.

The Violin Spider as it's called down here in South Africa, is quite prevalent in both urban and rural parts of the country. I was bitten by one in 1993 and I had a full blown reaction to it. The severity of the wound is not just about how you react, but how much venom you get nailed with. The best comparison I have is a Puff Adder bite.

The females venom is twice as potent as a males venom. The extreme reactions from recluse bites come from adult age female recluse. Female recluse never leave their nest once they reach adult age so they need more potent venom because they are opportunity feeders. The males will traverse short distances in search of food or longer distances in search of a female during mating season. This leads people to believe that the reaction to the bite is based on how much venom or how your body reacted to it. The higher chance of coming into contact with males leads to more male recluse bites.

They can’t bite so they are the only spider that I was okay touching because they are completely harmless to humans if they had larger teeth to penetrate human skin however they’d be one of the most venomous spiders

@@KirbyMarie that is actually a myth, i know, i know, i just recently found this out too! Technically true daddy long legs aren't even spiders and they don't have venom glands or fangs! What does, and where the myth comes from are cellar spiders but there is no scientific data to back up any claims of this as the only way to test it would be to milk the spider and inject the venom into human tissue and this has not been done due to ethics.

@@KirbyMarie very false. 1. They actually bite people alot, especially kids. 2. Their venom is sometimes not even strong enough to kill insects or other spiders.

I lived in a house in Guatemala with a heavy brown recluse infestation. Because the house wasn't very well developed being in a third world country, there were plenty of cracks and crevices for these spiders to live in. I remember thoroughly inspecting my room and finding 15 spiders once. I'd see them inside every day, yet was never bitten. When I was bored, I would find two spiders of different species (spiders were numerous where I lived) and pit them against each other in a jar. The recluse never won, In fact it rarely ever bit, even when attacked. It's reclusive nature and unwillingness to fight led to other spiders which were often smaller and less venomous taking the win. I came to appreciate and even welcome these spiders. Fascinating species.

That was very helpful thank you! My house is infested with brown spiders I thought they were brown recluse spiders but now I'm not so sure however I do not want to get close enough to investigate whether it looks like that brown recluse spider or not I am super terrified but this puts me at ease a little bit

More likely than not, they are wolf spiders. Which is a good thing. Wolf spiders are actually totally harmless and are basically just fast, eight legged puppies. You can pick them up and toss them out at will. However, you might not want to. See, while they are harmless to humans and pets, they are predatory towards PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE. Centipedes, moths, beetles, and yes, other spiders. This includes Brown Recluses. Now Brown Recluses themselves are already largely harmless for reasons Coyote didn't actually cover here, but if you still want them to stay gone, just leave your wolf spiders alone. They are effectively free pest control and if they're around it means whatever other pests you have are being eradicated. I do recommend acquainting yourself with what they look like and getting comfortable with them; the ONLY "scary" thing about them is how they look and if you can get past that single solitary thing then you basically will never fear these things again and even be pretty happy if you do see them. Hope this comment improved your day in some way.
