A good old friend of mine passed last year out here in the Mojave desert in California, the last bike in a lifetime of many HD's for over 60 years, We both came from the days when a decent running Pan or Knuckle that wasn't hacked or chopped & could be had for a few $100, His last shovel resided in his living room for the past 10 years & was mechanically refreshed & almost cosmetically finished to his taste before he passed, unwanted by his 40 year old son & flock of 20 something yr old video game oriented grandkids, or any of the few local HD friends for that matter who all have newer Hd's or older gold plated pans & knuckles and no garage space left. That poor orphan AMF he did alot of screw & glue bling add on's & some bobber work to it, lowered with a metal flake pee pad for a seat. Its crossed my mind a few times to adopt the bike but now being in my 70's my days of playing Mr Good wrench on an AMF are long gone..& the roadside memories of my ever bleeding '67 electroglide dresser (which cost $1600 out the door back in the day) are still fresh in my mind as the stains from 50 weight raylube puddles are still on the driveway.

31:51 PB Blaster is my go-to problem solver. I learned about it while changing the CV axles on my 94 Corolla that spent 10 years on the east coast. It moved to Phoenix Arizona where I eventually bought it. The underside was rusted bad and the clear coat was burned off from the Arizona hot desert sun. All the fasteners we're rust welded under that poor car. I tried five different products on the rust and nothing worked. A buddy came out to check on me and came back with a can of PB Blaster. I sprayed it on, gave it a little bit of time and it worked so good. That was back when you couldn't find it on the shelf at the auto parts store. I always keep a couple cans around now.

If you end up using the CL tank (same one I use on my race CL) you don't want to use the petcock anyway. Just block off the petcock and the crossover tube on that side, and use the other crossover tube as your fuel source. Just put an inline petcock and a fuel filter on and you're good to go. I use the crossover tubes as my fuel source (since I run a twin Mikunis) and its perfect. Or you can use both crossover tubes and T them into a petcock and filter and into the carb. Get the plastics from Preston Petty.

Man, I love you guys, and I love that Dyna, but my hardcore introversion and newbie rider anxiety slapped my hand away from the purchase button for the raffle. I love the idea of hanging with you guys, since you & Chey's videos kept me going through lockdown and a lot of tough times. But god dammit, the idea of being in any kind of crowd is instantly exhausting to me. Who knows, maybe some day I'll get to say hi and thanks to you guys in person. I have no doubt that Dyna will sell out in hours. In the meantime, you still have my thanks for all the entertainment!

I'd trust the ran when parked on a motorcycle much more than I would a car. I don't know why, but people think motorcycles are mystical machines and they are afraid to work on them. I bought a "ran when parked 16-18 years ago" 1977 Yamaha xs650. Half ass cleaned the carbs, new plugs and wires and hook up a battery and about 35 kicks and she ran. That was over 6 years ago and it's been torn down the whole time. Days to work on it are few and far between its a roller now, and the engine is in. Still in the mock up stage and I haven't touched it in over a year.

2 strokes so easy to work on or take apart vs 4 strokes. My dirt bike i take it to the frame once a year to really clean and paint. You can almost do it is a day if you did not have to wait paint to dry. I wish I bought the last year Kawasaki kx 500 cc dirt bike. Over 60 horsepower and just over 200 pounds. Power to weight is awesome. Your build bike should be similar

Chey and Josh, did you run a compression test on that Shovel engine? If I had it to do all over again, I would have installed a Baker 6-speed in my old 84 cu. inch Pan/Shovel. I've ridden Shovels with 1996 (and earlier) Softail 5 speeds and Baker 6 into 4 transmissions. To me, it was like the difference between night and day. If this were my bike, I'd keep the 39 mm fork and go about four-over, make some improvements to the internals and install a pair of gaiters. I'd keep it as a swishy tail too. Bad roads are everywhere.

How the hell would you put a Softail 5 speed in an FX/FL frame ?
@walterfechter8080
@walterfechter8080 Жыл бұрын
@@kurtfoulke5130 A 1996 and earlier 5-speed will work in a 4-speed frame with an adapter plate. The mounting bolt patterns are different. The transmission needs to be raised and shimmed. The seat post tube needs to be notched for clearance of the 5-speed lid. There are videos on KZbin that mention that mod. Ride safe.
@kurtfoulke5130
@kurtfoulke5130 Жыл бұрын
@@walterfechter8080 Hey Walter, Softail 5 speeds are practically free compared to a Baker. Can you run the Softail primary with starter motor or are you forced to go belt drive with a kicker ? I can put a full battery in a saddle bag if I need to change the oil tank set-up. Thanks
@walterfechter8080
@walterfechter8080 Жыл бұрын
@@kurtfoulke5130 -- Kurt, you are right about a H-D Softail 5-speed transmission being a lot cheaper than a 5-speed or 6-speed transmission from Baker Drivelines. For what I know about running a 5-speed with a Shovelhead engine, you can only run a special engine to transmission support, a belt primary drive and the Softail diaphragm clutch assembly. I'm not sure about running the stock Softail inner/outer primary covers. I'm thinking that some kind of spacer setup would be required. As you already know, the most important factor is keeping everything aligned from the engine pulley to the rear wheel sprocket (or pulley). You can run the Softail electric starter setup. Of course, a kick start conversion would have to be added to the 5-speed gear box. If you go that route, be aware there are some junk kicker conversion kits out there. Do some checking around for a kicker conversion setup. The oil tank/battery box will have to be custom made. The entire conversion will definitely take some work. There's a guy in Lake Worth, Florida (Gattis Garage) who's shop has done that 5-speed conversion to a Shovelhead and even on a flathead 45. I hope this helps. -- W

Although I’ve never had an H.D. I’ve had some bikes that could kick like a mule and make a grown man cry, I’m not saying there’s a right or wrong way to kick start a bike but a proper straddle kick in my opinion gets more inertia into the kick. I recently bought my first bike without a kick starter and the first bike with an electric starter, just putt around fun bike I have to admit it’s nice.

After a BSA, and a couple Triumph bikes, I decided to jump off the cliff and bought a brand new shiny AMF!! A '73 kick start only FX! I figured if I couldn't kick start it that I didn't need to ride. Being that I only weighed a buck forty, a few tricks made it easier. The only time I had a problem kicking it was the first week I owned the bike it was below 0° !! I made the mistake of leaving it outside one night and I didn't put lightweight oil in it!! Even being a smaller frame person I had NO problem kicking it over. I've never been a fan having both feet on the same side of the bike, it was always easier to kick it balanced on the bike.

My first ride on a Harley was an Electra Glide with a primary belt drive and a final belt drive. I took it for a short test drive because the front brakes were not working it was smooth as silk almost as smooth as my Airhead BMW the guy who owned the bike saw the smile on my face offered to sell me the bike and when I said I had no money he said we shake hands on it you pay me when you get the money old-school European I ran into him a week later at a biker bar and I asked him how big red was doing and he started to curse he sold the bike to a guy who got drunk off his ass and wrapped it around a telephone pole so hard through the motor out of the frame he was so pissed that he wished that he had given me the bike because I take good care of my bikes now he was a rich guy who owns a lot of property and gave the prison in easement to get to 41. He had a highway patrolman give him a ticket for not wearing a helmet on his private road so he shut down his private road and got everybody at the prison stuck for a week they had to do some major apologizing for him to open up the road again. That bike with $3,000 40 years ago. You did really good with that purchase. I taught lots of women how to ride my 650 Triumph with a hardtail it's low to the ground they can sit flat-footed confidently and it weighs a lot less than a regular bike make a pile with a swingarm and shock absorbers and a battery and an electric starter and see how much that pile of stuff weighs. A Magneto is really good because it is so much more reliable your whole electrical system can take a dump but you can still ride your bike home
