good job getting her running. I had a 66 corvair 40 years ago, and the wheels would spin in neutral (powerglide) just like this pontiac. also, I believe the trim and bumpers you have are very pricey and hard to find. thanks for the video!

One of my friends had one of those for his first car. It was a black beauty. It had rods knocking at first but with help from his dad sitting on the couch was able to shim the Babbitt bearings and make a good runner out of it. Those straight 8s are pretty fast and the heavy cars do well in the snow if you don’t put wide tires on them.

I had a 52 Cadillac that was 6 volts. Local battery shop suggested running an 8 volt battery. This was in FL where starting a hot engine in the summer with six volts was iffy. The down side was blowing bulbs a little more often and the generator would need a rebuild because it would get hot. I had them install the 8 volt battery and adjust the regulator. Ran that car all thru college with very little trouble. 8 volt batteries are marine or military for 24 volt systems.

Cool. I’ll look into that

That's how you upgrade your electricals, not by converting to 12 volts.

Remember, with 6 volts, you need 1 gauge battery cables, not 4 gauge cables.

The radio (want a fancy word to drop on your friends?) is a Super Heterodyne tube AM receiver. When you turn it on, you hear a hum as the vibrator operates, the tubes warm up and the radio signal comes through. The vibrator continues to hum, but isn't noticeable when the programming plays.

Maybe that plate in the glove compartment was used when a radio wasn't opted for. Original radios had "Chieftain" on the face, I think. Some years, Buicks had "Roadmaster" on their radios, whether the series was Special, Super, Century, Roadmaster, or Limited.
@justincooper51892 ай бұрын
I'm suggesting a 12 volt conversion, simply because it's easier to find electrical stuff for. Obviously there's a lot of room for improvement with it, so for now, baby steps are good. I'm gonna suggest replacing the glass before it hits the road, because it might be balloon glass. I'm hoping to see a repaint on it at a later date, but making it safe is obviously first priority. I hope this car ends up being more fun than headache.

I had a Cadillac that had no park on the the gear shift indicator. My brother told me to use the reverse location after shutting off the engine it worked. Good luck I hope this is useful.
@Shop2092 ай бұрын
Yep. That’s what I found out after we drove it. Reverse without engine running locks the trans and acts as park. Thanks for the info!!
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint78522 ай бұрын
It's a driver. Best way to stop without brakes is down shifting and when you're as slow as you can go in first gear, pop that puppy in reverse and stomp the throttle until there isn't anymore forward momentum. And then put it in neutral until the wheels stop spinning. Then if it's an automatic, put it in park. If it's a manual, make sure you're on flat ground.😳 If there is a little bit of parking/emergency brake available, don't try to use that alone to stop. Use the above downshifting technique until it's as slow as it can go in first gear, pop her in neutral and apply the parking/emergency brake until you come to a stop or slow down enough for the circumstances you're dealing with. If one practices the above technique enough one might be able to daily drive it that way until your next paycheck so you can buy the parts to fix the brakes?😯😁😎👍
@Shop2092 ай бұрын
It’s an Auto. That car doesn’t have park. The shifter is very sketchy so controlling which gear it’s going to while driving is not easy.
@66skate2 ай бұрын
That doesn't sound like very sound advice he's offering. Not sure about that far back, but cars in the 60's had a reverse lockout so you couldn't put it in reverse while going forward.
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint78522 ай бұрын
@@66skate Well, my experience of driving without brakes are mostly with post 1968 automatic transmissions so there is my disclaimer. Anything older the driver of that will have to figure that out themselves.😎👍
@66skate2 ай бұрын
@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 I don't if disclaimer is the right term, since we know the car is a 1950. Also, post 68 automatics have a reverse lockout.
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint78522 ай бұрын
@@66skate You sure about that, I say there is no such thing as a "reverse lockout" on a th350 or th400. Not even on the more modern overdrive automatics. Maybe that might be a thing in some manual transmissions but absolutely not on a post 1968 automatic transmission. Been stuck in the snow to many times going back and forth from drive to reverse without stopping the wheels from spinning to know that your "reverse lockout" is totally not reality.🙄

@@66skate It is . The HydraMatic is a four speed dual range trans, using a fluid coupling in place of a torque converter. Oldsmobile introduced it in 1939, and they were popular with drag racers up into the 1960s. Other GM dividions, except Chevrolet, adopted it, and it was also used by Kaiser-Frazer and Rolls Royce. The bands are externally adjustable. (Through the floor - RHS of the tunnel, remove a small cover). A parking pawl is engaged by placing the trans in Reverse and shutting the engine off.
