Will it Run? Episode 2: 1951 Hudson Pacemaker

Hi! I pulled the old Hudson out of the barn to see if I could get it to go. This car was probably last shut off about 35 years ago, and the engine was pretty tight from sitting. I like these old step-down models, they are quite sleek and low, and this should be a very nice car once I finally get around to restoring it. Thanks for watching! This video has had the audio track replaced due to some copyright issues; I apologize that the original engine sounds have been lost. I'll try again next summer to get it going for some live sounds...

So this is where it all started. Classical music with car mechanics - as good as it gets. My Grandma had a Hudson similar - all eight grandkids in the back seat and on the floor - lets go! Turn up the concerto.

I have a 1948 Hudson Commodore 8 (254 C.I inline 8) that I am buttoning up an engine rebuild on. All original car with original upholstery. 34,882 miles.

@destry232 Haha! You're right! Stel hops in all the cars! It's actually a problem if the car is really nice inside, like my '76 Newport. That's why I'm selling it... I did this video a couple of years ago, but it was blocked by youtube for copyright reasons because of my original soundtrack pick. I just pasted a youtube-approved song on top of my old video so it wouldn't be blocked anymore. Thanks for watching!

@tomperanteau Thanks! I used to use the video editor to simulate old, grainy film, but I don't bother anymore. I appreciate your feedback, and if you check some of the more recent videos, the quality and camera work is getting better. I even have a proper tripod now!

A lot of people put Olds 394's in Hudsons. The real bomb is to put in a HEMI because the Hudson block was chrome steel for long wear so it weighed like 700 LBS!! so a hemi can go in with little or no weight difference especially if you set the engine say 6" plus inches back. THEN you have MAJOR power AND the super great Hudson handling.

A friend of our family had a Hudson dealership. Need to put the Twin H power set up on the old girl. Those step down Hudson's were good stock cars, handled well.

I love Hudsons ! They are ugly and for me, the uglier the better! I only wish I had the money to buy one . Thanks for posting all the episodes of great old cars you've saved. I'd pay to be your test driver just to drive some of those old gems ! I'm in Ontario, so if I'm ever looking for a change of scenery, I may head out west your way!

Sometimes ugly is just a matter of what you are used to seeing. Trust me, Hudsons go way back. They would not have made an ugly car, you can't sell ugly; they became defunct for several reasons, but ugly wasn't one of them... That said, there were other cars that were ahead of their times, the Chrysler Airflow for one. The public at large simply weren't ready for it. In a conservative society, only the daring embrace change.

Yes, It was after this that I decided that I would actually try to narrate the videos as opposed to just playing them over music, which was all I wanted to do at first. I didn't really expect anyone to watch this stuff, you know?

Yup. There are a lot of us motor heads out here. I think you live in the ideal situation. Where I live there is a neighborhood association that is making me find a new home for my 28 foot camper. They don't allow boats either let alone lots of old cars. I very much like your narration. Especially when you put subtitles for what Stella is thinking.You and your friends have a great sense of humor. I hope you keep at it for a long, long time.
