There isn't any reason why it shouldn't work. It's a damn carburetor, it mixes gas and air. Whether it's a lawn mower, motorcycle or V8 car engine. The only thing wrong is a large engine like that needs a little extra gas to help it come off of idle. That's why car carburetors have an ' accelerator pump ' to give an extra squirt when you hit the pedal.

I did something like this to my old 96 Ford Escort. The fuel injection computer quit working and I needed to drive to Montana from Vancouver WA to see my youngest son who was moving to Manitoba with his mother. I fabbed a bracket to connect the cable of a Mikuni carb from a CR 250 Honda , clocked it to the throttle where the existing throttle cable was still connected, made a sealing ring to fit in the throttle body of the fuel injection and mounted the carb directly into the throttle body intake without removing any original components. I drove it there and back averaging about 40 mpg. Later by playing with the positions of the throttle body and slide clocking I was getting over 50 mpg and even the check engine light went off and it had more power than it did before even.

Gotta keep the snowblower carb clean and you won’t have issues. They sit most the year and gum up and fill up with crud. It’s usually the venturi tube that runs up the middle of the crab from the fuel bowl to the throat of the carb. It’s a small hole which clogs easily.

Here in Mexico people often do this in older V8 engines. They use smaller carbs to try and save a bit on consumption. Yeah, it kills a few horses from the power side, but most times the loss isn't much or enough to be a dealbreaker. EDIT: People use the smaller version of the carb actually used by manufacturers, not actually a tiny one like shown here i.e. in Dodge engines they would take out the 4 barrel carb in their D150 for the 2barrel used in sedans like the 4-door Coronet

I had a 79 F250 4x4 with Edelbrock 4 barrel tuned 400...I put 4bbl to 2bbl then 2bbl to 1bbl adapter...With a Carter YF off a 300-six...it ran ok actually...but it was GUTLESS... I had a downdraft 1bbl off of a twin cylinder ONAN engine that had an accelerator pump...I thought about trying it...but also had throttle issues standing in my way... You could install carb pointing backwards too! - *EDIT: Watching the video of Luke driving it, my hypothesis was correct, with such a small throat it really didn't have much for flat spots and therefore didn't need an accelerator pump.*

Car manufacturers are not stupid. They have very talented and bright people working for them. They have always had those type of people's working for them. If a tiny carb quadruple your gas mileage. A room mate that I had many many years ago told me a story that when he was a child growing up in Louisiana, the local mechanical guru had used a squished beer can as a carburetor for the electrical generator that fed power to the homes where he lived. I did not believe him back then, however now that I know how carburetors work, Bernoulli's effect, I can totally see that it was true. I have no doubts that this lawn mower carburetor can and will run the 302 albeit with reduced power output due to reduced volumetric fill for each cylinder. Sometime later the factory contacted the dealer asking them to get the carburetor back ,and return it to Germany. Well this got the dealership interested in what was going on? The car was recalled and the odd carburetor removed and the correct carb was put in it. The owner was aware what happened too. So the correct carburetor was installed and the owner left the dealership. Weeks later the car was back at the dealership, customers complained about the lower gas mileage the car was getting. I once took two smaller carbs and made a custom manifold for the 5.5 ohv Briggs I had on my old Craftsman mower I put big truck tires on the rear and upped the pulleys a bit to get it to go faster. I made a pedal clutch that tightened the belt when you stepped on it so it engaged the belt and drove. It was pretty cool. You could shift it on the fly. It didn’t have a deck and wasn’t for mowing, just for ripping around on. Couldn’t afford quads or dirt bikes when I was a kid and my parents didn’t buy us that kind of stuff.

Gawd, this brings back memories of high school back in the early 80's... Some buddies of mine did this to an old camaro, but they didn't have all of the high tech conveniences like CNC, 3d printing, CAD/CAM and so forth... They fab'd it all by hand. They pulled a carb off of a briggs lawn mower and mounted it on the engine of the camaro. Shockingly enough, it did run and it actually got excellent milage, BUT, it had absolutely no power. Again, if my memory serves correct, I don't think it ever made it over 60 mph and it took a hell of a long time to get there. But again, they hand fabricated everything themselves.

Too small of a carb for any power. Sure it will idle, but it's not gonna have any acceleration. No matter what you do the engine needs a particular amount of fuel for the air coming in. Not enough fuel and the engine runs hot damaging it very quickly. Might as well put the engine that came with the carb in the car.

Because its not a 302 anymore, it's a 302 with a carb limiting the overall horsepower to around a 100 I would guess. But you still have all the internal friction from the large engine. My minivan gets 33mpg and still has 230hp if needed, but it's computer controlled. This was tried in the 70's, that's why the car builders went with smaller engines and computer controlled fuel injection, carbs can't control the fuel as well. Without any feedback from say an o2 sensor you are always running lean or rich. I used to have a porsche 924, it used mechanical fuel injection with a computer and o2 sensor to adjust fuel mix whole driving. Even then the best it got was 29mpg with a 2.0 liter engine and weighed a lot less.
@KevinSmith-os5yz
@KevinSmith-os5yz 2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewSosa which means less power, not much different than just not putting your foot so hard on the accelerator. Biggest problem is the friction of the engine itself. Trying to make 4 cylinder power with eight cylinders has twice the friction losses. This was tried back in the 70's without much success. That's why all the 4 cylinders in that era. These days you can get what he is looking for with a good v6 and computer controlled fuel injection. Carbs can't control the fuel mix well enough, no o2 sensor feedback. You end up too rich or too lean and terrible emissions from both situations.

By the physical properties of the float level vs bowl pressure vs float level..I am predicting that with a very low float level that the carb will act like a fuel injection nozzle with a needle jet..lol..at throttle, my guess is that the float needle jet will stay open and that the engine will just be sucking fuel at the rate the regulator is set at..which makes me want to experiment with "over jet pressure" senerios..whereby at throttle, the fuel pressure may be upped to 7 or 8 pounds..over charging the needle..but testing will give an idle..and at higher engine speeds, 8 psi fuel pressure just dumping into the intake.🤩

We need a part two. I would love to try on a ford Ranger 2.3 liter stick shift. I wonder what the mpg would be on a 302 and 2.3 liter. You may have created a prototype intake for the mower carburetor and great gas mileage as we deal with $4.00 gasoline. Looks like you need a fuel pressure dial up meter and carb linkage.

The question is, what has the greater potential flow, this lawn mower carb or the ones that were fitted to these V8’s in the early smog days in the 70’s?

Those were two barrels, the Venturi in the lawnmower carb is really small

Just to give you an idea. A 225 carb Evinrude has 6 single barrel carbs lol. The best thing they ever did was go to direct fuel injection for amazing fuel economy . They bit the dust because Evinrude’s quality control sucked but they would stomp every other engine in their class.

Sir... you are 100% a mad scientist, incredibly grateful to have randomly met you on Powertour! Very much looking forward to this "test drive" but she sounds pretty reasonably happy at idle and revving! Hopefully BP / Shell / ETC don't see this video though ;)

You could print a manifold and put 4 of them on there.That would look sweet.

Even if you did just two pointed towards the valve covers you could go cold air intake easily .

Why stop at 4? Design individual runners and you can get 8 on there like individual throttle bodies. 😉

Ive done things like putting a two barrel Holly on a Toyota Land Cruiser. Went from about 11 mpg to 16. Had a Impala with a 350 cid engine. As long as I was pulling my 22 foot camper the power valves were open. Removed the springs.couldnt tell the difference but used a lot less gasoline. Removed the push rods from 4 cylinders and put lock rings on the lifters so the cam wouldnt touch the lifters and knock them out of the bores. Then I put a Ford Falcon carb on it. 500 Cadillac engine. Put a 2.5 Chevy 4 on a Impala tranny put it in a Farmall H. VW beetle catb and distributor. Came out of a fuel injection car. Hadnt thought about a lawn mower carb. Been using toilet paper filters since 1963. Started with a Frantz oil cleaner. All I use now is Motor Guards and Gulf Coasts. Have a Jackmaster ordered from Austrailia. I dont change oil.

I wonder how it would run with 4 of those carbs on a good researched manifold splitting each into 2 intake valves. Just wondering. I remember an AMC model that had had 4 side-draft carbs set up on a custom intake manifold, of course heavily chrome plated everything on the motor. Still if a very functional manifold can be created for 2 spread bore 4 barrel carbs with progressive linkage, why not 4 2barrels with long tube individual runners to each intake valve.

@@unknownsoul13 you’re essentially just running a convoluted four barrel then. This experiment is fun to watch but is just a flow test. As long as the small carb flows enough air and this matching fuel to meet minimum requirements to move the vehicles mass, it’s not magic. The same thing is accomplished by restricting throttle butterfly travel on a larger carb. Like driving a normal vehicle only using 1/3 throttle.

It's going to bog. No response time when stepping on gas, you may as well just put it in gear and hope for the best because when you step on the gas anymore then prob 1/8 it'll stall.

@@dawhoda1 he got it to go but with no accelerator pump on the carb you have to ease in real slow and managed to get it to 70. I’m just not entirely sure the point of this whole endeavor. Everyone is thinking he’s invented the wheel but he’s reinvented a single barrel carb like we’re used on flatheads minus an accelerator pump. Hot rodders then started putting more carbs on prior to four barrel carbs because you need more air and more fuel to make more power. Like I said in a previous comment, he’s essentially running a four barrel with the accelerator pump unhooked and the throttle locked out at 25%

Before watching this I'd imagine, assuming you get the air/fuel ratio correct, that it would run like a much larger carburetor limited to part throttle. ps turn out yeah, pretty much. And the main issues stem from the simple design limits of lawnmower carburetor.
