Hehe, long time VW wrench here, started in the days of the Mk. 1 Rabbit. My old 80 Rabbit C had two control "modules", a hot start pulse relay and the intermittent wiper relay. These days i work with the whole gamut of modules...Getting the hang of the quirks with the new Continental ECUs...temperamental buggers. Rescued a Vanagon last week for a traveling customer, Digifant ECU died. Killed ignition and opened the injectors, pumped 5 quarts of gasoline into the sump. He was so happy to drive his Syncro home.

I drove one back when I was in High School. One head blew off, and limped it home on two cylinders. The block got helicoiled, and head resecured. About a year later, the head blew off again, repaired again, and sold. Something about that year, the head and Bloch were of different metals, which expanded at different rates, causing the issue. That was over 50 years ago.

Had a 1964 black convertible bug (not Karmann Gia) when I was 17. Bought it for $200. Used to pick up the local gals and take em for a ride thru the neighborhood with the top down. Then would drive through an open fire hydrant and get them all wet. (We used to open hydrants and use boards to fan spray to the other side of the street. A city thing in the hot summers of Chicago). Early on in the video,I could hear the 'easy'cylinder or cylinders that have a valve stuck open. They may unstick, once some oil gets on them.Something I like to do is take a squirt bottle with about 16 to 1 2stroke gas and pre prime the carb.by squirting the mix in the slanted bowl vent tube until you see wetness at the throttle shaft. It eliminates a lot of grinding and dry cyl.walls, accelerator pump, etc.I love it! The valve(s)that are stuck open in their guides must be intakes, because if they were exhausts, the effect on the manifolds vacuum wouldn't be nearly as detremental to sucking in the gas.If its an intake, when the piston comes up,it pushes pressure in,and cancels out the necessary vacuum.I once hadca 223 ford 'cost clipper'6 banger that had an intake on one cyl.stuck open and it made it act like it was cold-natured,almost like the accel.pump wasn't operating. It was a new carb, and after it freed up,(vise grips, air in spark plug hole and liquid wrench),it ran as good as new. I love the detecting of issues! I want that bug!!!😁

I had a '75 Superbeetle. First year for fuel injection. It was a nightmare. Airflow box was dragging the flow gate right from the factory. A cold snap would warp the casting and flood the engine once the gate swung open and stuck. I finally drilled it out and hand scraped the flow box. Filled the crankcase with fuel once when an injector stuck open. Had to get my brother to (shamefully) tow me home with his Pinto... Still had to adjust the valves regularly. Car would go anywhere... floated over deep sand and mud while I watched my buddies in their 4 wheel drive bog deep when the tried to follow me through it. Very tough motors.... Not so much with fuel injection. I have a swing axle tranny for a VW if you ever get down South, you can have.

v dubs are tough as hell. i used to build bajas and sand rails. i remember buying a 67 for $50 that was sitting in some weeds at a farm, and hadn't ran in 20 years. put a battery in it, poured gas down the carb, and it fired right up. the lady i bought it from was amazed. her son bought it new, got drafted and died in nam. it never turned a tire from the time he parked it where it sat, till i winched it on my trailer.

I had a '57 VW Bug oval window back in the late '80s. It was kinda beat but it sure was fun. I remember there was no fuel gauge. When the engine began to stall you would take your right foot and find a lever in the center of the foot well and rotate it to turn on an auxiliary tank. I remember the tail lights were soooo small. There were other oddities too, like it being 6 volt with a generator and the oil filler cap said "OEL." I ended up trading it for a '64 karman this with a later model 1800cc dual port, dual carb engine. The power difference was huge! Lol!

Id be tempted to warm it up and take out the rocker gear on that side, make sure the lobe is facing the other way and give it a few taps on a another pushrod that you don't mind bending.
