a friend of mine had this 2275 cc built out vw engine that he got while buying two cars, he had it in his barn for 8 years and never ran it. so We came up with a trade of an early vw beetle that he wanted to build and I was looking for a large engine for what I want to build on the condition the engine was in good. well let's find out how that goes in this video.

Everyone should work on a VW engine just to appreciate how simple it is

In the big picture it’s simple but at the level that engine is at it’s not. They are very finicky to synchronize the carbs, set and maintain crank end play and cooling with such big bores and thin jug wall thickness. They are truly an engineering marvel though.

Breather looks like a Gene Berg unit; good stuff. Heads are big valve CB 044s. If you have chromoly pushrods valves can be adjusted at zero lash. I suggest reversing the valve covers so that the breather nipples are towards the transaxle side of the engine; cleaner to run the hoses on the rear part of the motor rather than the front.

Sounds sweet. Some nice parts ( O44 heads and MSD ignition with twin 44 Webbers ) I built a 1776cc years ago which was such a nice engine. That little extra time setting up and balancing everything made for a super smooth drive with a bit of pep too. I bet that car and engine have long since been crushed so its nice to see you still having fun and saving a few - Paul 😃😃

NO! Not at all. Krusty is Krusty. A Lreal classic. Let it remain that way, a historic vehicle true to itself and of value. Turning Krusty into a hopped up beast would make it worthless and ruin it. Krusty is a solid reliable workhorse that shows just how good that factory engine was. Let is remain that way. Now if Musty was to put that engine in his Kharman Ghia, a true sports car, that might be another matter.

I owned a number of 914s and did a build on the last one, which was a 916 look alike. This was about 1994 or 95. Started with the '73 2.0 and added 96mm jugs and a cam, balanced , dual Dellortos, an external oil cooler with Melling high flow pump etc. and had the heads done out in California. It made a fair amount of HP. A leaking needle and seat led to hydraulic lock up and a bent valve, which was my fault for not driving it enough, but it was some fun when it was right. I'm older now, forgotten most of what I knew (which wasn't much!) and really enjoy seeing someone who still loves the old air cooled VW engines. Thanks!

@@111000100101001Flat 4s don't usually make much of a different sound with a big cam. But I don't have experience with VWs, only pushrod Subaru engines. My daily driver 1.6 Subaru EA71S with a 310/310 cam and 12:1 compression idles fairly smoothly and the only difference in sound is that it's more crackly and sounds like it has a slight misfire at idle. But it has to idle at 1200 RPM or it stalls out. So that could be why.

Watching as I type this so ignore if I should have watched it through. Your compression isn’t going to be a “true” reading if that’s a legitimate 2275cc. I’ve built and ran a ton of these from 1835 to 2275 and bigger. If it’s fresh and not ran your rings aren’t going to be seated yet but the compression and the issue you saw with the sunflower seeds moving both ways in the exhaust is going to be the overlap in the cam. We used several different grinds but most of them had enough overlap in the valve event timing you never got a good compression reading. I’d run it for a bit in a “break in” procedure and then beat the brakes off it and have fun!
@utooobur
@utooobur 2 ай бұрын
I was thinking rings weren't seated also. When he removed the rocker covers it looked like that engine was never run for even a second. Also, in my opinion, the valve seating story doesn't fly since most of the valves would have been closed not allowing rust to form preventing them from closing. The compression would not have been so consistent through all four cylinders. Most likely at least one cylinder would have had good compression. When he cranked that engine it was the first time those rings were introduced to the cylinder walls. IMHO.
@captainchicken8983
@captainchicken8983 2 ай бұрын
seeing the way the plugs looked when he got it, it probably had 2 heat cycles on it for cam and crank break in, but it seems like no one did any quick WOT whacks to get the rings fully seated. scored on a clean and good sounding lil air cooled there though, i could eat dinner under those valve covers lol

I was going to say it doesn't look like a Beetle engine due to the design of the block, possibly a type 2 Case. I built a 2180 Engine years ago that was fast and loud and used a Rhino Case I imported which was custom made for clearance internally, it had a stroker crank and large pistons and barrels etc. I did a lot of the machine work myself including extra clearancing and lightening the flywheel.

I collected , built and modified VW's from the late 50's to the late 60's. I had so many different engine mods, but nothing like this monster. I was more interested in maximum fuel economy , with some added performance qualities as well. I really hit the mark with an old 1200cc, with a 1375 kit, a Pict 19 carb , high compression (I never actually calculated it but it was a bit too high with .060 milled off the heads) , extractor exhaust and everything else stock. On the first road trip after break-in I went from Kansas City to a small town in Michigan. The car was a 1964 Karman Ghia with excellent aerodynamics. When I passed St Louis and the fuel gauge had barely moved, I got out and wiggled the fuel gauge cable and it was working. I ended up getting 65 mpg overall. And that little sucker was fast. Big downside, high octane fuel was required and that reduced the economics. Another mod I did was added a heat recycler (EGR type), which further added to the high octane requirements. It was my own design that used the intake manifold heat pipes (push me pull you factory setup) and tapped into it with a 1/4" OD copper tube which I wrapped around the exposed intake manifold neck below the carb and then plumbed into the manifold right at the base of the carb. The restriction of the exhaust flow barely changed the fuel air ratio at normal running speeds, but the vaporization of the fuel was fabulous. It ran for 3 years with all kinds of driving but eventually cracked a ring on one cylinder and I retired the entire project. I sure loved this video and it's my first time here. Thanks so much for the great content.

On those Weber D.P. manifolds, it really makes it a lot easier to set them up if you pull the manifolds and drill them for a 3/8" barb fitting so you can run a balance tube from the right bank to the left bank. Do your initial carb setup (idle speed and mixture) with the balance tube clamped, then take the clamp off and you'll have a nice smooth idle (depending on the cam), that will stay in tune for a good while. I'd like to see that beast in the Crusty cab. That would wake 'er up!😂👍👍

@@throttlebottle5906 You must have missed the part where I said 'clamp the hose to do your initial setup and'... Say what you want, but on big cam motors, they run so much better and actually idle from almost dead cold. I had a 2180 with twin 44 IDF's in a sand rail, and it was an absolute pig to keep running when it was cold (because no chokes). If you set it rich enough to run when cold it was too rich when it finally warmed up. The balance tube fixed that.😉

I was always told (and read) that you should have the throttle open while doing a compression test, but recently I did an experiment. (I'm 64) I did all 8 cylinders on a V8 engine with the throttle wide open and at idle. To my surprise, the numbers were exactly the same. My theory on it is that the starter turns the engine over slow enough that it makes no difference to the engine on the throttle position. It can still breath enough for accurate numbers.

I had a friend of mine who was grinding an older transaxle to fit it I believe for a 12 volt starter (not sure) Any way He found out the hard way that it was not aluminum, rather it was made of magnesium. He had a flash fire occur and was standing inside the engine compartment where it was difficult to get out. He received burns on his arms and legs from this hot fire including his hair. After getting out of the engine compartment, the fire extinguished itself. He spent many weeks in the hospital and several plastic surgeries later he looks similar to what he used to but not exactly. Lesson learned!

I used to go to a motocross motorcycle race in upstate NY and one group would bring VW engines to burn. Man when one would go up it'd be like the mothership was landing. They'd throw cold pots of water on it while it was burning to make it crack open and burn even more. You could see the light from 20 miles away. Good times.

I’ve been re-watching old Mustie videos of VW engine assessments and will-it-runs and I was thinking "I really wish Darren would do some more of those" and lo-and-behold, a will-it-run/assessment on this beast of a motor pops up! Thanks Mustie for all your videos over the years - this is by far the best mechanic channel on YT!

As someone who has over the years had a fair bit to do with tuned Porsche air-cooled engines, it is wise to bear in mind that much of the cooling is actually from the oil flow. They need in most cases, a rather bigger oil cooler, positioned for maximum air flow, than you might at first think. My final one (at the age of 78, I have retired from motor competition) was an RSR spec 3.3L Porsche flat six, with around 300HP in tarmac rally tune. It needed a 72 row vertical flow oil cooler sat in an aero tunnel with a modified front luggage compartment floor, mounted in the front spoiler, otherwise the oil was getting up to above 250ºF using the original front wing "trombone" type coolers. With these very large oil coolers, a thermostatic diverter valve is also a good idea, to speed warm up time.

A Porsche is just a VW with an oil cooler. OK a Porsche might have a leather interior too.

@@1pcfred Total Rubbish. You have very obviously never owned a Porsche. Other than the very early cars built in Austria, Porsches have almost zero parts in common with a VW. I am currently on Porsche #7 with a Panamera E-Hybrid and I have just sold a 1977 911 RSR.

From watching Mustie for the longest time, it's pretty normal for motors to have low compression until they run for a bit, heat and stuff just clear all the crust and muck off the rings/valves
