I was contacted about an old vw bug that was going to get junked. they offered it to me for parts so we went off with the trailer, its real rusty but lets see if we can get it to run and drive one last time.

Mustie1, I had a red 1971 Super Beetle in the early 1980s that I bought from a co-worker (I learned to drive a stick with this car). I lived in Lowell at the time and was driving back from visiting family in NY when the 1600 swallowed a valve in CT. The guy I bought it from helped me drag it home and let me rebuild it in his barn in Hollis (he was areally NICE guy). I rebuilt the engine (rebuilt heads, new pistons, cylinders, etc) and it ran great. God bless Paul

I know what your saying! I have what they call "Trigger Finger" in both thumbs. ( I know, should call it trigger thumbs) I have no way to grip anything anymore... Can't pick up a glass or even tare open a bandaid wrapper (I use scissors). I had to replace all my door knobs from the round ones to the ones with the levers. Can't grip the door knob to turn the things... :-( What really sucks is when they (the thumbs) lock closed!...... I have these hard plastic glove type thing that lets me use my fingers but holds my thumbs stationary so they won't move or bend.... Retirement is a blast... LLAP

What a resurrection feat! Can't beat those old VW bugs. I once floated one in a flash flood. A wall of water came out of nowhere and washed me into the middle of an intersection, bobbing around like a rubber duck. A guy nearby saw my predicament, swam out and towed me to dry land. Turned the key and it started right up. The only casualties were the "cocoa mats,'' which smelled like moldy carpet, and the two tailpipes that rusted out. So yes, they did float.

My ex-father in law had a beetle in the early 1970’s. He worked away from home but left the car at home so that I or a neighbour could use it for the benefit of his wife & kids. It was a car full of character - spare wheel under the hood with the windscreen washer bottle pressurised from the air in the tyre, 6 volt electrics, de-mister vents in the corners of the windscreen that smoked at high rpm, fuel level gauge that worked from a float in the tank through a bowden cable to a slide that moved up & down in the gauge plus many more idiosyncrasies that made it a car to remember. I loved it. The neighbour always rested his foot on the clutch pedal & when it no longer pulled properly it went to the scrap yard. A few years later I changed the clutch in a friends beetle & it was so easy to change that I kicked myself for not changing the clutch on my father in laws car.

I have loved Beetles since I was a kid in Chicago. In the early 80s was when I fell in love. I used to like all of them though I knew very little. Two stand out very vivdly though. One was a 1975 because of the odd rims they had for that year model and also because this one was orange. A neighbor a block over from our house, owned it and it had a bad engine and it sounded bad, it was loud too. The engine eventually caught fire and was never fixed. The other was a 1973 yellow one that my father had for a very short time. The axle was locked up and it was never fixed either. As I got older I learned more about them and I finally got to drive one a few times which made me so happy. I've always loved the sound of those engines running right with the distinct chirping sound that when I was a kid, didn't know it was the muffler making that sound. The only ones I grew to not like is the Super Beetle and the 1973 and up regular Beetle or as I now call them the fat Beetle which are the less desirable ones. I had hoped to own one by now, but I haven't been so lucky because of how RIDICULOUSLY expensive the good ones are and how bad of condition or how much work I can't afford to do, the cheap ones are. I don't know how to do major work on cars, I don't have the patience or the back or hands for it. I'm glad to see some saved and fixed, but I also get so upset a lot of the time when I see someone who owns a ton of them and or who gives them away to other people when fixed or whatever, because I've worked so hard at trying to get one and never being able to. You are SO LUCKY to have them and I really wish I was you or the other fortunate ones to own all of them. I also always wanted a Fastback and Squareback too. Before I die I really hope to have all 3. I really want anyBeetle between 62 and 66 that can be a daily driver. I don't care what the paint looks like as long as it runs, drives and is reliable. Too bad I can't do a fund raiser to get one or be lucky enough to be given one. Oh well. Thanks for all your Beetle and other VW videos. I will also say this too, it is because of watching your videos I NOW know what the engine sounds like when it has no spark or compression and there is a difference in the sound when turning it over. Also what it sounds like when valves are sticking or knocking and when some of the cylinders aren't running. And the difference between a Bus and a Beetle engine, which I never knew were different.

We went from a Lamborghini to a super Beatle. What parallel universe am I in? Wait it’s mustiest garage. I’m ok now!😜

David Helmuth That was just a Lamborghini shaped object, not a Lamborghini... This IS an authentic Volkswagen.

As a young guy in college, enjoyed working on Bugs, had several. A buddy located a bug in nice shape, being sold at a low price, because guy thought it needed a new trans. He’d just gotten home from 6mo overseas. Would start, but “reared-up” when put in gear. Seemed odd, ran to my dune buggy racing mentor who ran the local Shell station. Asked “Has this been sitting for a long time with e-brake on?” Suggested the sledgehammer approach. Figured we had little to lose. Towed it was worth just what we paid, if it rolled away, we were ahead. Paid the man his price... had tow number ready... smacked the rear wheels HARD and away we drove...😄. My buddy had a decent bug for an amazing price!

Amazing. Just amazing. When you backed up to your garage I thought you would immediately start taking the lights off and putting them in rubber "stash" tubs.

Older brother had a 70 Beetle. Fun to drive. Always ran funny after a so-called tune-up. At 30,000 miles it ran poorly. Here was an intake valve where an exhaust valve should have been. Intake is bigger. VW denied any liability. His ex got that in the divorce. Auf wiedersehen!

I suppose it's only the engine itself that makes it run. But impressive
