Hey craftsman push mowers are good as long as they have a briggs and stratton engine. I have one that cuts extremely well and i only paid $10 for it. It also has a electric start which only needed was a charger and need battery.........until my dogs decided to do some maintenance of their own to it. Poor $85 harness never stood a chance nor did either of my push mowers pull ropes. They no longer sell the harness so now i have to make my own. Yeah me! Lol

Balance weights on a 1972 14HP Koehler (balance gears) (2 gears ) granaded - took out part of the bearing shaft casting on the inside of the crank. After much searching and contacts with Koehler, was told the engines could run both ways. One brand of tractor would run that engine with the balance gears and another brand using that engine (cub) would run it without them. That tractor is still running today as healthy as a 50 old engine can be. Great video, enjoyed it.

That is why I will not buy any riding mower with a single cylinder Kohler engine. I was told that Briggs sued Kohler over the design of counter balance engineering. Then Kohler redesigned the balance unit and it is a weak link destined to failure. Both of my riding mowers failed that way with the thin counter balance bearing doing an exit. One was on the bottom like yours and one was a top bearing failure. Same result. The Snapper mower I use today has a Briggs 14.5 in it. It was my father's mower and it is still running and it was manufactured in 1999. Great video. You have so much good luck with free mowers!

Newer versions of that engine have an arm that keeps the counter weight in line instead of that key and grove. They also replaced the woodruff key with a keyway because they had a problem with them shearing. It's a weird engine. I actually like the design. Having access to the internals by just removing the top lid is genius but they have too many issues.

Mustie, I hope you read this comment. My wife owned a 1984 Plymouth mini van with a four cylinder Mitsubishi engine. It was a real POS. It had a balancing shaft. The chain on the shaft started rattling so I removed the chain and left the shaft in the engine and I just put it back together. It has been a long time so I don't remember if the timing chain went around the balancing shaft sprocket or if it had a separate chain in the crank. Either way, I remember removing the chain from the shaft and I left the shaft in the engine. It shook a little more but it ran ok and it was running fine several years later when we traded it off. In fact that engine shook from the day it was new so it didn't seem that much worse. I hope you cleaned the crank case out from all the shrapnel. I was sitting here saying, Mustie, please take some time and try to do it right because it actually might work !!! Try draining the oil and flushing the crankcase. Give it a real chance to live. Rig up a good throttle. Then, try to mow with it. You might be surprised. It might actually work. It would made a great third video in this series.

That was cool! I think that the engineers figured out that rather than have spinning weights on the crank that requires a certain amount of room and case, they came up with this setup that allows a smaller case and slimmer, lighter engine that is easier to spin up on starting. I guess they forgot the Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) method of engine building. Anyhow, this was an enjoyable teardown and learning lesson from the small engine whisperer. Keep up the great work!

My personal guess as to what happened is that one of the flyweight bearings was starved for oil (or just wore out) and started to get chewed up and grab, making the weight want to spin with the crank. This then started pounding the weight back and forth on that bolt which wallowed out the hole and then broke off, at which point the engine stopped. Love the videos!
