Very happy she started! My Jeep is 'only' 33 years old but you show how easy they are to resurrect and maintain. I'd still replace the fuel filter after so many years. A Jeep on a old dirt road is like a dog off a leash!

I'll definitely go through the fuel system. I do think the previous owner replaced the fuel tank already with a plastic one, so that's a positive for sure. I'll be some work, but fun work.

Your partner's inspiration to film over the windshield instead of through it was heaven-sent. Made the running video much more fun to watch. You could do other videos like that through those wooded trails and I'd sit and watch with a bag of popcorn. Love the characteristic whirr of those engines which, if I'm not mistaken, is caused by the cooling fan.

Those old f134 i 4s are bullet prove. We have a 66 cj5, back in 71 gramps would drive it from pa to new york. 55 was pretty much WOT with the hills and at some hills only doing 25 or 35 but he did it. Engine blew up from the high rpm, he rebuilt it in a auto part store parking lot and another time years later. But here in 2021 we keep her going, it was the jeep i leaened stick and how to drive on a few years ago

What a treat! Brings back old memories. Would love to have an old CJ5, which, at the age of 22 , was my first vehicle owned. In the early 70's, I was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Davis DD-937, a Navy destroyer built in 1955. We were deployed overseas, the Mediterranean, and at one of the ports we visited a vehicle vendor came aboard. They offered various cars, trucks & motorcycles for sale, which could be delivered to anywhere you chose in the States, at a time of your choosing. They also offered a military discount. Knowing that I was going to depart the Navy and return to Michigan in late 1974, I ordered a CJ5. I was young, single, adventurous, and didn't feel I needed a regular car for transportation. After being back in Michigan for 3 weeks, a local dealer called to say my Jeep was ready. He said that I'd have paid $600 more if I'd bought from him, and there was no charge for dealer prep. He showed me how to lock out the front hubs, how to change from 2WD to 4WD, handed me some paperwork, the keys, and I drove off. My CJ had a soft top, and the doors didn't seal like a car door, so a bit of winter wind could easily whistle through. But that Jeep had a killer heater! Boy, was it ever fun to drive through deep snow, or the woods in summer, like you did, without the top and doors. I'll give you a tip though, don't ever lay the windshield down on the hood. Thankyou for your service! We have a 66 cj5 its a blast. I daily my 81 cj7 in snow, summer you name it. I cant stand the modern cars, my dads always saying its more of a toy you should get somthing more suitable for on road use, i told him it gets up to 70 its all ill ever need. Frames mint but 40 years in salt and its taken its toll. Aaving u pfor a fiberglass body, although for its age and years in salt shes pretty fresh for almost 200k miles and 40 years in the rust belt.

For me there wasn't cjs in our market..in stead there was somecar that looked like cjs..it was JB Land Rover....the British type of the desert car in all weather conditions...it was amazing..I was also single and like off roading the top of mountains and its lowering slops ..it was like horse no limitation for it..... Now a days we just find F. Fusion , TOYOTA PRIOS or hundy, Honda...soft cars..even the paved streets does't satisfied. Anyway thanks alot for you and the you tuber.

just started the video. itll start no problem, my buddy and I fixed a 74 cj5 one summer when we were home from college. it took us about a week of workin on it after work to get it roadworthy enough to take to the dmv, its going to take lots of brake bleeding and replacing parts and gaskets and oil and pb blaster and new wiring in some parts and a new carb and gas tank flush. lots to do but its such a simple vehicle to work on

Wow! Such a joy to hear it actually start! I can see Rachel driving around the farm in it! You brought back memories with hearing it trying and trying to turnover. When I was 16 I bought my very first rust bucket for $500 CDN it was a Plymouth valiant and it was a 1969 light blue color and I was in heaven! Of course it didn’t even start but my father who was a mechanic was able to restore it and get it running for me. I learned to always travel with a screwdriver in the car so that when it wouldn’t start I could put a screwdriver in a certain section(I’m guessing the choke) and hold it open and magically it would start. Once it was going it ran great! Although if I had any people getting in the back seat I had to tell them to becareful and not put their feet on the floor boards because the carpets were covering the rusted out holes in the floor and if they stepped on them they would go right through and then it would be a Fred flintstone car! Lol! Of course I’m a girl and didn’t know much about cars but I did pick up just enough to keep it running with my dad’s help. There was a lot of time when I would sit behind the wheel and wait to hear Dad shout “ok give it a try” and I would turn the key and say a little prayer. My teenage friends learned if they had $5 for gas I would pick them up and we could go cruising! Lol! Dad stopped working on my vehicles in the 1990’s because as he said most cars today need to be hooked up to a computer for diagnostics and to fix them. So that’s when I learned how costly it was for repairs and decided I’d rather get into debt with a car loan then to keep paying unexpected car repairs. But these days a 6yr car loan?!? Craziness! Give me an old Jeep to drive any day. Although I don’t drive anymore because I live in the city and everything I could possibly want is within a two block radius. I didn’t miss getting rid of my car, no more car loans, no more car insurance, no more parking fees, no more high gas prices. Didn’t miss it at all! If we want to go anywhere that we can’t get with public transit we can rent a vehicle and it’s like being in a brand new car and no worries. I hope you enjoy your Jeep for many many years to come!!

Seats look like pre 66, seat belts are 60's Jeep. I'd say it is a 65. Looks like my early 66 which has pre-66 style seats and a 65 paint color. The fenders have been bondoed over to become one with the body. Not how it was originally. I'd get a new accelerator pump in that carburetor or your oil level will rise (gas will leak in) and you'll foul out your plugs. Throw a carb kit in it and it will start and run like a dream. The diaphragm in the accelerator pump in the carb will go bad when sitting for a few years. My jeep sat in a field for 11 years but ran well after going through the carb, fuel pump and tank. Nice Jeep!

I live in southern Indiana and I also have a 1965 cj5. It's a diamond in the rough. It runs so I put a complete brake system on. Including new lines I made. The body definitely needs some attention, but that is my craft. This one is kind of unique it has the PTO on the rear. Farm jeep. That banging noise could be either your exhaust , a broken shock, or bad body mount? I would say even if things were perfect its going to ride like a buck board and rattle. lol Mine hasn't been out of the driveway yet but its got brakes. I have too many projects. lol

Come on Rachel, driving stick is easy peasy once you get used to it. My first car was a stick. I couldn't even drive a stick when I bought it. It sat in the driveway for weeks until one day I decided it was time to learn. So, I hopped in and managed to get down the road a piece and back without busting the engine or stripping the clutch. Every day I would go a little farther until one day I was driving across town. Then down to Florida. No stopping me now. Stick to it. You can do it!!!

I got a 58 cj5 at home, never heard of the one piece fenders before, mines needed a lot of work. I would double check brake lines, replace fuel filters, and all fluids before you drive her too much. She sounds like she needs a good chassis lube and a little bit of driving!

Ps if you run your vin number it will tell you the year and if it is a 65 (which it has the early style windshield and the hood notch so it’s an early cj5 for sure!) I believe it has 5.38 gearing in it! Mine does and I love it

Nice original Jeep CJ5. A tune up, an oil change, some lubrication in all 3,000 grease fittings and a tidy.... and she'll go on forever. BTW 7.00x15 bias ply tires are still available. Just Google.

First thing I always check on old tractors and cars and stuff is oil and coolant, then I check spark plugs and and if they look good to go then I start her up, if it won’t go then I’ll check the distributor cap to see if the pints are fouled up or rusty

5 hours, a small toolbox of hand tools, and 16 year old me who had never done this before had the v8 out of my 81 cj7. Course once it was out i couldnt push it up the drive way cause 145 pound me couldnt push the 450 pound 360 on a hoist but after some help with that, a rebuild, and some help getting the tranny mated with the clutch and flywheel i bolted her in, re assembled and had a cj breathing that v8 thunder baby! Its my beat up baby its my daily and its a blast

Make sure you replace your brake lines, fuel lines. The brakes more importantly. They rust thin and will completely fail once pressure pushes through

Nothing like a drive in a convertible is there? My wife enjoys getting out for a drive no doors, no top....... As mentioned earlier, brake lines and fuel lines. Can't go wrong replacing them. Tune-up and filters, again, great next step. Quadratec was mentioned in the previous vid I believe, and they are one of the best, but I myself went to my regular parts shop and asked if the ordered anything from Omix-ADA, and they actually already did, so I just order from them. A side note, you will get caught in a drizzle or a light rain, so a small bikini top is a good purchase. Personal experience, have one available. It's worth it.

Great video 👍. There is an old CJ5( looks to be around the same year as yours) about 10 minutes from my house sitting in the yard of an old empty house. I walked up to it a handful of months ago to check it out. Faded yellow paint, no top no doors. Summer came and now it is almost completely hidden by bushes etc. I think I heard that the person who owns the property lives out of state. The CJ has been just sitting for years. I want to try and get it, but my CJ7 I have now is already a project/my daily.

Fantastic. I love seeing older stuff kept running, especially Jeeps and Beetles. From my younger days when I worked on my cars I can only recommend having a service manual as specific to the model and year, or at least range of years, as possible. OEM if possible, but independently written ones can be good as well. I'd consider a used one if it came down to finding one or not. It's that useful. Best wishes with the restoration.

I have to laugh about the first tire place you went who thought it was a trailer tire! Back in the day a 7.00-15 LT indicated a 7” wide tire, 15” rim, and the LT stood for Light Truck (usually heavier sidewalls and load rating).

Roverman Chrysler killed Jeep and Fiat took a piss on its gravestone. People love to blame Fiat, which don’t get wrong is a horrible company itself and did no justice for Jeep. But Chrysler OMG what an embarrassment to the auto industry and Chrysler is who’s to blame for such travesty. Chrysler was the parent company to Jeep until the end of 2014 and believe it or not Jeep sucked in 2014 and about two decades back they sucked. Now both are under the Fiat/Chrysler parent company. So this is more than just Fiat but Chrysler. As long as Chrysler is involved with Jeep I any way or fashion it’ll suck. So please stop the Fiat blame lol.

Good video. Your Jeep appears to be a late 1964 model year, (probably first titled in 1965 thus titled as a 1965). Early 1964s had the battery trays near the radiator, yours is near the firewall. However, all 1964s had the cutouts for the air snorkels in the passenger side of the hoods. I965 models did not have the cut outs with the plugs in them like you have. I also have a 1964 CJ5. Mine's an early year production (actually a Tuxedo Park Mark IV) first titled in 1965.

I believe why you don't see a separation between the fender and body is someone has put body filler over it. Nice you have an original red jeep. Mine is a light green. Not OD. After watching the video I need to uncover mine and look at where the battery is located. I'm pretty sure mine is up by the radiator. I don't know if someone has relocated it or what. It is the four cylinder like yours.

Yeah the engine not wanting to start was probably because you have a crook battery and a dirty window screen, my best advice is to use diesel first time as it helps lubricate the rust and engine parts. Spraying the whole vehicle with diesel is a win win also as you get real good combustion and a major rust deterrent

Also that lil ridge piece on the right side of the hood is done so that it can be removed to adda snorkel. My cj6 had a factory snorkel on it.

It was a state government dot maintenance vehicle. The unibody with no fender gaps are a dead giveaway. I had a 60 cj6 done the same way.

@@1870s yer welcome bud. Mine was a Kentucky dot maintenance truck. It was a long body cj6. Had a factory snorkel on a 3 barrel carb ontop of a 225 slant 6. The original engine overheated an locked up.the engine that was put in it after that was from a 65 plymouth of some sort. It had the factory 3 speed in it. But i removed that an put a h10 4 speed stick with a granny low in it. An that thing would rattle up a hill quicker than my buddy dales yj with a 350 vortec gm crate engine in it.

Mahindra was making jeeps clear back to the 40s if im not mistaken. They quit for many years but there more of a jeep than the fiats

That is definitely a CJ5. The fenders are supposed to be separated. Someone welded together or put bondo on it. Lugs nuts, wheel nuts on the driver side are reverse thread. As in the turn left to tighten - they have a little L on them if you look.

Clayton Muirhead deffently bondo over the seem for the fender to body you can see the rust whole when he is putting the tire on

Nice! There are quite a few places to source parts from. Walcks.com and Quadratec just to name a couple. I've had too many Jeeps in my days. My favorite being a 60 cj5. Stock. Same motor only I traded out the stock carb for a Solex. What a difference in the way it ran. I love that vintage Jeep. So simple and easy to work on. Congrats.
