Jeeps are amazing. They are engineering marvels for their utter simplicity and the fact that the basic design ( I have to use this loosely considering the Fiat versions) is still wildly popular today. Plus it's the vehicle that's kept America free!

That old Jeep tub is better than most of the 70s and 80s down here. Thing is you can still find all the parts you need for them. Little motor sounds great. Never say never. Just so you know; Pablo was pissed when you came around the corner with out him.

I grew up in a Willys Jeep. My parents were overseas in Angola and I have memories of my parents and 5 kids travelling hundreds of klicks through the back country. We drove in dust choked and mud choked roads, driving through creeks, and up and down rain slicked mountain roads. I can remember my father using the winch on the front to help trucks get out of the mud.

The final five minutes of this video is pure magic.. The expression of faithfulness and dedication to his human on that old dogs face, as he stands in the jeep just enjoying the ride. PRICELESS. As for the Jeep.. They fetch a high price here in the UK WW2 vintage or Post War like yours. It wouldn't be used as a yard hauler. 😉

The oil dip stick may be attached to the cap by spot weld. When the cap was removed pulling straight up and the oil level would show. They did this years ago on certain engines to save having an extra machine step in the block. Lawn mower and small tractors had this set up.

In over 50 years of repairing and restoring Willys Jeep vehicles I've noticed one thing that always stands out. That one thing is Jeep owners that think they are smarter than the Willys Engineers were. Most any modification seems to somehow diminish the overall flexibility of purpose in design. Example; Duh... that old Jeep is too slow so I gonna stuff a Chevy V8 in it so I can go faster. That old Jeep is slow because it has 5.38 gears not because the F4-134's 75 HP is not enough. But the Chevy V8 will trash the drivetrain and you'll have yet another Jeep on it's way to the scrapper. That M38-A1 /CJ-5 has pretty good bones and if left stock and rebuilt a bit could become a fun project.
@jesseripley4562
@jesseripley4562 2 жыл бұрын
I somewhat agree, but if a guy is going to go through all of the trouble to upgrade the engine, he's like upgrading the drive train/gearing as well. I don't know, I am probably wrong, the wife seems to think that's usually the case.

Brings back memories of my '51 CJ3A. Had the L-head instead of the newer F-head. Rest basically the same except no starter solenoid and straight hood. Later upgraded to F-head. Near indestructible. Was my daily driver. My pedals were stuck too. Very little left of the body. In Florida, they ran them through the brine swamps chasing wild boar. So, no floors left. My brakes had 4 adjustments, lower cams and upper stops. I could not tell which you were adjusting. There is an upgrade for the front tie rods. It basically uses a tie rod between the wheels then a diagonal from the far side to the steering arm. Makes it not jerk right/left on hard bumps. Cheap as it really is just one threaded pipe. BEST dog vehicle. Mine loved standing between the seats. If you haven't, get the reprint of the military service manual. Enjoyed the vid. Still regret selling the Willys. Every time I smell gear oil, it reminds me of the Willys. ;)

I would fix that willys, they are getting scarce. It looks pretty solid. You dont have to do a concours restoration. Just derust it and por the metal and put it in epoxy primer.

A full on restoration is not warranted but why not fix everything that's broken? Love that he addressed the fender and the frame among the other necessities... I'd leave the frame and body as-is as far as the "patina" but only address the real cancerous rust.

Nothing better than taking a Jeep out of the cast off section and making it useful again. Fun video
