As a mechanic listening to that engine try to start I would say the timing is off by quite a bit that's why you broke the starter gear when it tried to kick back. So I would put it on top that Center number one and reinstall the mags. And I bet it runs is sounds like it will.

Hey Jimmy - I used to fly an Aztec and it sometimes had the same problem with kicking back. It was equipped with a "shower of sparks" ignition coil for starting, activated by a separate contact on the starter switch. If the shower of sparks didn't activate, the mag would spark at the advanced timing and cause the engine to kick pack. We ruined one or 2 starters and flywheels that way. In our case, it was just the contact in the starter switch. If you pressed hard on the switch, everything was good. Make sure that the system works before you try again. Love your channel, by the way :)

That's the difference between a modern automotive electronically controlled engine verse a mechanically driven one, they are more difficult to start since it doesn't have the electronic flexibility, but are more reliable once started since it has minimum points of failure.

@@mofayer true that. My dad had a 1964 Piper Cherokee 235 back in the early 2000s with an old Lycoming O-540 in it. The right hand engine sounds like the ignition timing is over advanced, the way it was kicking back against the starter when it was firing. So check it before attempting to start it again. What a generous gift for the kids Jimmy and great videos. 👍
@mikegoodman447

The timing is fixed. So there is no timing advance unit. The engine will always be starting in an advanced state. That's why a lot of planes "start hard." I think it started hard because he didn't have a battery in it. Even though he had a "jump" that is not how you should start it.
@martin4787
@martin4787 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikegoodman447 Hi Mike. The new engine didn't have the same issue when being started for the very first time, jumped from the same source. That only leaves the starter, either worn or loose, starter or earth cable have a resistance.

@@mikegoodman447 Hi Mike, Martin again from the UK. I thought the start hard was due to them being long stroke engines. 🤔
@mikegoodman447
@mikegoodman447 2 жыл бұрын
@@martin4787 A car starts typically around just a few degrees advanced. The mag system they use is fixed at around 22 degrees or so. When everything is just right fuel mixture and such the engine will want to bust off just as soon as the spark gets there. So if it is spinning to slow an early firing will make the engine kick back If it were say rich, the engine might not kick back as rapidly and start just fine. If the timing was way off the thing would have broken way before this.

"What could go wrong" should be a new merch slogan.😁 And, in aviation it isn't called a hammer, it's a fine adjustment tool. Works like this 1 If it doesn't work use fine adjustment tool 2 if it still doesn't work use adjustment tool a bit harder 3 If it still doesn't work you "adjusted" it too much, replace it.

A commenter has already suggested we check the timing on #2 engine. If the mags have impulse couplings on one or both, stuck weights on the impulse couplings could also be a culprit. Some engines had impulse couplings on a single mag, and you started on that mag only, selecting the 2nd mag once the engine was running. Just some thoughts. Very entertaining! Treat that fresh #1 motor carefully, with a good break-in routine.

The 310 parked next to the Aztec may turn out to be a sound airframe but the "gut" says it may be wanting two factory reman engines plus the prop STC. By now you know what to look for so no need to editorialize. I think you have discovered the good handling, performance, and relative fuel economy (for a twin) of the early model 310s. @Jimmy World, Could you explain to the viewers why ALL (seems like it) aircraft engines seem to struggle to start. The shake, and appear to have massive amounts of compression that make it "struggle/shake" before actually starting. Thanks.

The timing in these engine is fixed at full advance. Were as in a car the engine typically starts with only a few degrees advance and advances with rpm. By having a fixed advance there are less moving parts in the distributer or mag to fail and this makes the ignition system less prone to failure. Once the engine builds up a few rpms you'll see the engine usually clears right up. Some race cars have a fixed advance and can be a bugger to start but stay dead perfect the whole race.

@@mikegoodman447 Thank you very much for the explanation, never knew that. Looks like they would sell a lot of starters with that type of stress on them. We tune cars through the ECU and can command any degree of timing we wish at pretty much any point, so no moving parts there. It would make sense that aircraft engines could do the same with the technology today, maintaining the same reliability.

@@michaelkennedy2528 Seems a lot of Lycoming engines use the left magneto for starting. It has an automatic retard built in with the "power of sparks" It operates only while starting. Once the key is let off the magneto reverts back to the fixed timing. Seems aircraft engines are still stuck back in the forties technology. Not all engines have the retard feature. His could be faulty, but he should never have attempted starting without a good battery.

That's a Bendix drive starter once it engages it doesn't release unless the engine starts. Never hit the start button till the prop comes to a complete start. Now you need a new ring gear & starter bendix drive. You Florida boys should know in the winter engage the bendix after you shut down the engine or it will be frozen in the morning and not engage.

Jimmy, in Texas there was a collision between a single engine Cessna and a twin engine Cessna when both were coming in for a landing. All four people in the 2 aircraft perished. So, Jimmy be super careful out there and keep your eyes open. You're a great Pilot. A great mechanic, too. Hope you can get you another mechanic. Take care. Congratulation of purchase hope you get that number two engine started after the fly wheel change.

I agree timing issue on right engine is off. Also to everyone out there. Never crank an engine with open spark plug or coil wiring. The spark will discharge and find a path to ground no matter what . This cause possible alternative pathways to ground and when reassembled to plug can cause misfires. Most of the time this arcing takes place in the mag cap or distributor cap between terminal pins. Don't do it...

The right engine's ignition timing has too much advance on initial startup.

My thought exactly, that was causing the kickback as well.

Faulty impulse coupling or starting on both can do that if the mags are good enough make a spark without the impulse. I wrecked a starter bendix by starting on both many years ago. Big kick back then slipping starter next try.

Hi Jimmy, here's a bit of trivia. You were looking for the battery and opened an access door. You saw a penciled phrase. Seguin aviation. I grew up in Seguin, (sih-GEEN) Texas, it's near San Antonio, what was Geronimo field. from '70 to '80. Seguin aviation did the mods to make the Aztec look more modern and maybe more streamlined, less drag? I don't know when they closed up. Had to been early 70s. I also worked at Santa Monica Propeller as a governor repairman. I did quite lot of Aztec overhauls of the Hartzell governors from'99 to 2000.
