Today I'm finally able to see if I can get the old boat motor to start on my 1966 14 foot Hourston Glascraft . This boat restoration project has been extremely fun and slightly challenging but it is now time to see if the old Johnson Evinrude will crank, start, run and idle.

Awesome job bud!! You’re an excellent teacher. You don’t just say what to do, but you comment on what not to do. I wouldn’t think that motor has an alternator. So what charges the battery? I was expecting the engine seals to leak. Be interesting to see if it doesn’t leak when you rev ‘er hard. And hopefully she floats good with minimal or no leaks. 🙏🤞👍👍

@Mike990920 there's a coil in the flywheel. Basically as the motor is running, the flywheel spins and when the coil goes past the magnet it sends a small shot of electricity to a regulator that then regulates it and sends a steady stream of electricity to your battery. That same coil is also what sends electricity to your spark plugs.

@Borderite I've been calling the old girl Ruby. The first run will be on Dinosaur Lake. I stay away from Charlie lake. I used to fish Charlie all the time but the water has got so gross over the years that I don't even think about going there anymore.
