You should never spray starting fluid until the engine is being turned over by starter as serious damage can be done when a static engine on being turned over can bend con rods etc 👍

I thought on the starter fluid can itself it says to spray before the engine is being turned over

As you probably heard as you were turning engine over to start it made a few knocking type noises that is the ether expanding in the cylinders and putting the compression ratio higher than it should be be and that is what can cause bent con rods etc, if ether is needed try to spray as little as possible to avoid engine damage, hope this helps 👍
