Will it Start? Old John Deere Bulldozer

In this video I repair an old Dozer, it’s a John Deere 2010 Crawler from the early 60s.
I had been looking at many different bulldozers, Case, Caterpillar John Deere and even a Komatsu. All needed a bit of work and were priced fairly high. I ended up get this old Machine from my friend to repair and use on my property clearing land and pushing dirt.

Just a little water in-er, probably woulda burned off 😂 Those HF pneumatic nailer and staplers are great 👍 I've had mine for YEARS! Did my camper seats and a couple chairs no problem among other things. Dig the music too! 👍👍

When I was a kid in the 60s it seemed every farm in Ohio had a little crawler like this. They were small enough for the agricultural dealers to sell and easy enough to transport. We had mostly gravel roads where I lived and it was common to see track marks running along the road. Mostly the little guys sat, too slow for field work and too small for any work of substance. You are right, small dozers are way over priced for what they are. Most were parked for a reason. Many were broken due to being used for more than they were designed but usually just poor maintenance. You have a nice little machine there and a wonderful friend to let you use it. Of course it came with some sweat equity, LOL! Enjoy, be safe. Remember no cutting across slopes. Those cleats don't hold very well sideways, personal experience. The best part of this dozer is the skidding winch on the back. You will definitely use that on your property. Also I recommend Anderson connectors on all batteries for heavy equipment. That way you can easily charger or remove the battery after use.

The winch is really stout! We got it going years ago to test if it worked or not. The winch does work but the small master cylinder and hydraulic slave cylinder needs some lathe work, the components have some rust pitting but I think I will be able to make some new parts and hopefully get it repaired. 🙂👍

Back in the mid to late 70's our neighbor ran JD dozers and track loaders. 350's, 450's and 555 loaders. In those days that was pretty much the go to machines for excavation before excavators became the norm. He was a farm boy from Manitoba and one hell of an operator. He could dig a basement foundation in a day or two and be dead nuts level. A surveyor doubted him one time and said he couldn't get within 3" from level. When Ed was done he was within 3/4" across the whole basement. That surveyor was amazed and never opened his dig mouth again.

@@Mikefestiva yeah he was pretty impressive. The company transitioned to using excavators and he was a natural with them too. I was just a teen then and would go with him on the weekends and hang off the side of the machines. One day I asked him how accurate he was with it since they'd only had them for a couple years. He handed me a quarter and said to set it on a 4" alder stump about 15 feet away. He reached over with the bucket and with one tooth he bumped the stump plopping the quarter onto the tooth. Then he pulled the bucket in towards the track where my lunch box was sitting and give it a flick. Tossed the quarter into my lunch box. As a teen I was very impressed by this. I guess I'll tell these stories till I'm gone from this world. Lol.

I have the exact machine. 1964 2010 crawler. Mine has a 6 way blade. I got it for free from a friend down the creek. Hadn't ran for 12 years, said if I could get it running I could have it. Well 2 hours and it was mine. Don't turn right very well, and is starting to run rough, I thinks it's a bad return fuel line, might even need an overhead done. All and all I love it. Would like the ripper set up that one has tho.

Just overhauled and painted my John Deere 2010 crawler just like yours. Has to be the most expensive overhaul kit in existence. What makes it unique is that the liners are all connected vs being independent like most.

1964 a very very fine vintage if I do say so my 58 yr old self as of yesterday Dec 9th,tyvm..😁. I've never ran a dozer that small before but have an hour or 1000+ in D9 and D8s as well as one ancient Case or something I've forgotten the brand... But still that one sounds solid and good to go,can't feel the drives or trans but it appears to be rock solid other than thin treads...

I’ve got a John Deere 450c that I love but before it I had a TD9 international. My brother came up with the idea to hang small rippers under the dozer blade facing backwards on big 2” pins. That way they would swing up when you pushed forward and then fall down when you lifted and backed up. They worked great! And then there was no loss of motion. Push forward and rip backing up. Great video Mike!

Just got one of thos staplers on sale and it worked a treat for doing deer fencing around a raised garden bed and then I did a new seat on a wooden seat pan on an old ATC. Great advice from future Mike Festiva!

man i can't wait to start acquiring some heavy machinery when i move out of the suburbs. that thing is so bad ass. get some POR15 on all the rusty bits, stuff works awesome. i did my entire drift car interior with it. if you're gonna use the top coat, which you should, thin it with xylene until it's like a milk consistency, self levels so well then, comes out looking amazing.

Cool machine Mike. Back in the early 70's I worked for a summer for a guy that had an old 1929 D2 Cat dozer. This thing was something else. It used what they called a "pony motor" (a little 1 lung gas engine) as the starter to crank and start the main engine. Rope pull on the pony motor. I remember wrapping that 8 ft rope around that pulley and pulling as hard as a 15 yr old could yank to try and get that worn out gas engine to start. Spray some ether into the air filter and she'd cough and sputter to life most of the time. Pull on a lever to engage the transmission to crank the Cat diesel over all the while spraying its air intake with ether as well. Several years later I took an old Ford 12 volt car starter and designed and built a sliding mount for the starter, added a sheave to the starter motor shaft, made a handle (with push button on the end of the handle) and attached to the Cat with a small V belt to fit into the rope pulley on the pony motor. I added a 12 volt battery with starter solenoid and when you wanted to start the pony motor pull the handle to tighten the belt, push the button and the starter spun that motor over way faster than pulling on a rope. Last I saw that setup was still on the dozer just sitting in a field. It hasn't run in since probably the late 80's.

I have the 1010 gas ,i bought it well used 15 or more years ago and restored 2 others and sold them . pretty good machines and a couple of different variatons ,wide track ,narrow track .full 6 way blades all hydraulic and the manual 6 way blade .Yea pretty good machine. You might want to check yours cause in the video you have alot of movement on the backside where your cylinders attach to and im pretty sure there suppose to be solid.Might save you some bigger problems later on.

Love the dozer I got a 1962 1010c with the diesel and we’ve run it for around 5 years now and no real bad issues, but now got a steering clutch getting a little soft

There is a timing process when adjusting the steer clutches. Make sure you are disengaging the pressure plate just before the brake band starts to apply. Relining the brake band requires pulling the final drive I would avoid letting it ware in if you can.

Old machines its not a matter of if its going to break down its when, i have a 1977 international 175 and when i use it i just use it like it was brand new and when it breaks down it just say….oh yea here we go, lets fix it and carry on lol. Just have to keep some hydraulic fluid handy and a parts store worker on standby to make a hose when they blow, i have got 98% of the hoses replaced that didnt have rubber over them like that one did that you mentioned in the video. It will be laughing at you right in the middle of something you “want to do right quick” when it blows out and turn that right quick into a half a day hose change out😂. Wouldnt trade mine for one 20yrs newer though, just figuring out its likes and dislikes

1) use the reverser for reverse only, not backdragging or pushing 2) a powerful winch on something heavy is a great thing. Very versatile. 3) dry steering clutches stick and rust. Fiber plates suck. Go sintered metal and tie the steering levers back when parked

I think the water being in the Pan kept the oil up high enough so the oil was stuck around the pistons and their sleeves in everything and that's why it's rolling so nice for you at 1st finally nature did something good to a diesel
