Hank when testing a starter do not do not hook the ground to any of your wires coming off the starter if you have the starter off hook the ground wire to where you bolt the starter to the engine.

Hey guys. I'm a big fan. I hope you all have this figured out by now but on the starter when it is off of the equipment the two post on the solenoid are for hot. One should have a wire going into the starter and the other one is for the positive battery post. The negative from the battery should go to the body of the starter usually one of the ears. Then you short across either hot posts that's more convenient to the little post where the wire connects on that goes from the key switch. If you hook a positive and negative up to both of those post on the solenoid you're shorting it out. I wish just use jumper cables positive from the battery to one of those posts negative from the battery goes to the body of the starter and then short across the big post to the little terminal to engage the starter.

Wiley, you can try milk thistle, vitamin c and calcium supplements for thin skin. I am 68 and have the same problem. I too bleed like a stuck hog over a simple nothing scrape so my wife bought those supplements for me and I took them as SHE directed. While it won't cure us it does indeed help a lot. It's hell getting old.

I'm your man! in Central Florida, retired & nearly broke, so I work cheap these days!😁 A wire problem to me is a joy. 20 years of chasing multiple IC failures in systems with 30-45 pc boards, and actually has miles of wires, hundreds to thousands of connections in connectors, plus lots of soldered or bolted connections. The European diagrams were enough to make you want to slap their mama! That was my daily life.👍🇺🇸😎

you always hit the solenoid when you hammer the starter you should be hitting the motor part as the solenoid is obviously working, hope that helps

Let me correct what I said in my comment earlier. Short the terminal on the solenoid from the key switch/ignition switch to the large post that goes to the battery when you do that the solenoid shorts the two large posts together to provide power to the starter and spin the starter drive to crank the engine.

Always amazing how you get this old machines started....but it scares me when you work with the hydraulics after such a long time...if one of the rotten hydraulic hoses blows of you may get serious injuries by hydraulic oil shots.

I'm not a heavy equipment expert but I'm a know it all I think the starter support bushing in what ever you are bolting the starter to is wiped out so it is not supporting the starter letting short out on itself
