Getting a 12 valve Cummins engine to start after sitting for 7 years

Thats a perfect engine to learn about diesels, it’s a killer setup to keep. Got the good P pump engine, 4x4 and has a nv4500. That Tcase is a np241 Should have a red tag on it. While you have the tcase out it would be the best time todo the 5th gear nut fix if it hasn’t been done already. Has plenty of videos on what todo its easy todo. They have kits for it.

You have to use a broom handle and manually pump the lift pump ..

Also one other thing to remember when you're starting it even though it's have a hard time and you're getting it to run off starting fluid you at least got a hold of halfway to the floor or all the way and once it starts to take off rev it up pretty good if not they're really hard to get running when cold and I know that's not good on the motor but that's always been my experience with 12 valve Cummins motors

I have a 1994 dodge Cummins with 1.5 million had been sitting for 20 years it was 12 degrees Fahrenheit 2 fresh batteries pushed fuel plunger 100 times cycled grid heaters 3 times cranked 4 times around fired right up. Also in 1996 and 1997 Mopar advanced timing more than 1994 and 1995 for more power but harder to start cold. My friend had a 1998 dodge 12v Cummins never touched timing and was always hard to start in cold weather. Good luck.

I love these trucks , me and my brother have 5 .. I have 2 he has 3 .. LOL all 12v engines .. I did have a 2001 24v dually but sold it .. The Cummins trucks hold their valve my 2001 Dodge dually I bought for $16 thousand had it 8 years and sold it for 16 thousand .. My brother paints vehicles my 2nd Dodge 12v is a 1997 I rebuilt it using mostly Texas parts (rust free box etc.) my brother painted it a beautiful bright green (base/clear) .. I'm going to be selling it ...

That truck might be a 1995 instead of 1996 because of the turbo has a band clamp to hold the compressor to defuser section 1996 used a compression clamp unless turbo was changed 1994 and 1995 used used the band clamp wh1c turbo 1996 and 1998 used hx35 turbo

Since the truck was engine swapped I don't know the source of the Cummins engine, but that's good to know

Great save. The engine sat 7 years so I would let it run a bit. The blowby is minimal. T echo someone else, check the front end differential and gear.

tcase is split in half and it needs a new front driveshaft? should probably check out the front end a bunch too to see what he hit and what else is broken

Here's a tip, don't spray ether into the pickup, it probably needs new glow plugs.

Here's a tip, learn about what the fuck you're talking about. Cummins have heater grids, not glow plugs. And they don't wear out as easily as glow plugs. Anti ethers are the dumbest people. I've never seen ether ruin an engine. I've done it my whole life, and Zip Ties does it all the time in actual cold weather. We're talking GALLONS of that shit dumped into motors. Ethers fine for motors.
