Will Luka Doncic and LeBron James be a Winning Combination for the Lakers?

Now that the shock has worn off -- kinda -- Lakers fans are wondering what happens next.
Because while the conversation in Dallas about why Doncic is no longer a Mav is very complex and absolutely not finished (Nico Harrison's press conference on Sunday settled very little for Mavs fans), for the Lakers it's pretty straightforward. The Lakers had an opportunity to get their next generational star for a very reasonable price and took it. While it weakens them in the short term, the long term clarity the trade provides is obvious.
Is it risk free? What trade is?
What they have now is a consensus top 5 player in the NBA who isn't yet in his prime.
The immediate question, beyond what the Lakers do next, is how the team's new star duo looks once Doncic is healthy enough to join LeBron James on the floor. What kind of fit are we talking about? On the one hand, both James and Luka are basketball savants, who see the floor in ways few players in history ever have. The playmaking ability of those two, especially working in tandem on pick and roll sets and so on, is staggering. That much size with that much passing skill is unprecedented.
But here's the thing: While in the short term, this paring is of critical importance-if the Lakers are going to win this year and next, this duo will be the fuel that makes it happen-it's very clear now that long term decisions from the front office aren't going to be geared towards LeBron. Every meaningful roster decision the team makes is about Luka, and what works best to build around him when LeBron is done. And because Doncic is 25, not yet fully in his prime, those choices are a lot easier to make than they would be with a 32 or 33-year old Davis.
To be clear, there's nobody LeBron really can't play with, even while some styles mesh better than others. And both he and Doncic will need to adjust, as any stars do when joined together for the first time. But any sense of the team making deals because that's what LeBron wants? Ok, but only if it makes sense for Luka, too.

Its been just over 24 hours since I first heard about the trade and I am still in shock. We are going to have to make major adjustments to our game and identity , but man when you put all all the tools we have with Reddick and the coaching staff that he put together.... Man, the possibilities are endless. Am I wrong or right when I say that our average height on this team is 6' 8" with a 2" es or more reach in most cases. ( In a non basketball world, most of us have the exact same height and wing span.) We may not have a true center but we are very tall across the board.) Idk know about the new guys , but I see us with developing a team full of guys that can play five positions. We maybe lost a step. We might have a hard time playing bully ball but thaty was a weakness with AD. Now, we need to rebound and stay healthy. Look out world. This team is gonna be so much fun to watch and the chips will chips will come!!!!!

The thing I find most surprising about your commentary is how much you underestimate Luka Doncic. He is way, way better than you realize. Assuming he's healthy. That's the one thing. what matters now is what kind of a center they get.. lebron has never ever won a chip without a stretch 5 big on his roster. in the last 15 years i dont know one team that didnt atleast have an option for that kind of a center and won a championship. if u go out there and lets say get a guy like claxton and robert williams.. u basically kill lebron and luka's ability to drive inside the paint, and their ability to dominate the mid post. we desperately need a guy like myles turner or chris boucher.

Now, why would they do that? Even if you were to move AR to the bench unit, wouldn't that be a brilliant move to boost the bench? Basically you would have a second unit almost as powerful at scoring, as your starting 5 (considering that, maybe, you would get AR and Rui, both on the bench). @ because we already had glaring weaknesses while ad and max were here and they were our two out of 3 2 way players other than dfs. now that we lost them, its more neccessary than ever to get guys like turner, bruce brown, even cam johnson,herbert jones etc. u will need a lot of two way players to hide luka and lebron on defense. spacing and defense will be key which it already was before but now its a necessity. reaves might be needed to afford bunch of these targets since we have limited assets.

laker nation here to say that if Brooklyn is open to trade claxton y'all should trade for him 100%. he is the type of center that works PERFECTLY with Luka. uber Athletic, rim protector that is a great connective passer and can switch out on the perimeter on defense if needed.... 1st thing to do with luka is to pair him with a capable center then everything else

Luka’s 25 & he’s only played 70 games or more in a season twice. And he’s been a pro since he was 15 or 16. Sometimes big men have injury issues when they’re young. It’s worrying for a 6-6 guard/forward.m

He has a lot of miles on him from playing professionally as a youth, playing for his country in the summer and not taking care of his body. I don't think his body holds up past 32 or 33. But by then the Lakers should get a few rings out him with Lebron and post Lebron. So they can trade him or find his replacement by the time he hits his early 30s.

They both can generate their own offense, they are both experts at pick and roll (both ends) they are both world class passers, they both have high basketball IQs. They both have point guard ball handling ability combined with power forward size and Luca can shoot the three. I'm not seeing a compatibility problem.

Lakers need to get Luka a competent center, doesn’t have to be miraculous but nothing like Nurcic or Vucevic, get an athletic rim protector that can roll to the rim ideally. Luka made Dwight Powell look playable about 7 years past his prime. Styles ultimately make matchups but if Lakers decide they want to be small this year and roll with C wood, he can stretch the floor and Kleiber who came in the trade can play C as well and can stretch the floor but he’s injured and been injury prone over the last year and lost a step unfortunately. Mavs are going to be big now and it willl be hard to score in the paint vs them but not only are their bigs injury prone but Gaff and Lively get cooked by shooting bigs and can’t defend the perimeter well at all. They might have some good matchups with their size but have no chance against good shooting teams

Get Myles Turner and a bruiser 7-ft center, then you're good for this season. Or else, punt it altogether, get Luka 100% healthy, ride on the vendetta motivation to make him get in shape and make the moves in the offseason. Unless the Mavs' secret is that Luka's current injury will reduce his durability considerably, the Lakers can build the next dinasty.

(Maybe more with Luka facilitation), 10 from Vincent(catch and shoots) Finney showed he can be a catch and shoot threat... That's 120 Shoot maybe vando will be a lob threat now. Hayes will be a lob threat . We can put up 130 on mfs every game. our defense can hold up JJ sets the scheme

There's a reason when Max was starting and giving fits to opposing PG's we started winning more games. In all likelihood the Lakers wont be a good team until next season.
