I used to have knee and hip pain and I also have flat feet. Then about 18 months ago I got a pair of Merrel Vapor Glove after watching this channel. It took me about 6 months to build up strength to run more than 10 km but after those months I did a marathon, >100 km per week a couple of times without any problem. Before I could just never run that far because I would get pain somewhere. Now I also use Vibram KSO EVO or just barefoot. Thanks Steve!

Gday mate, Been running in vibrams/Merrell s for about a year after watching your videos - absolutely changed my life for the better. Nothing beats that free/liberating feeling of flying along on the balls of the feet ! I too suffered from knee/back pain from heel striking in chunky trainers and am now pain free. Also the calf gains are sweet. Cheers mate.

I had severe knee, hip and lower back pain that the thought of running was a no go for me. I then bought Vibrams KSO that were on clearance and my life changed! A few years later I now run 5K for fun with absolutely no injuries! I hike mountains in vibrams. Life changing for sure! I also was told I was not a runner because of my flat feet. Now I have and arch and running is my life!

Hi Steve, it's been my experience too that switching to minimal footwear has helped to stop the injuries I was getting from running, but it was just one (important) piece of a larger pie. I took up running about 10 years ago and did the standard thing of buying cushioned shoes with too much heel lift and narrow forefoot. I ended up with problems with my knees and the doc referred me to a physio. The pysio helped me realise the importance of strengthening the muscles needed for running and I started learning about good running form which led me to minimal/barefoot running shoes because zero drop, wide and reduced cushion is better for learning that. I realise now that having strong feet that work properly is better than relying on the shoes for cushioning/energy return etc. 'Normal' shoes feel too stiff and cramped now so I ended up selling all my shoes on eBay and switched to Vivobarefoot (for casual and work) and Xero, Altra and Inov-8 for running. I've been injury-free ever since. I started barefoot hiking a few years ago to strengthen my feet and that's become a major hobby, I've built up to doing regular 15 mile walks in the Yorkshire Dales most weekends, about 90% of the time barefoot. I wouldn't go as far as barefoot running, prefer the grip and protection of minimal shoes for that. In summary I think getting stronger has been the key thing, and especially strong feet which is often overlooked. And developing better running form from people who understand the proper mechanics such as yourself.
@kalclashfitness4 жыл бұрын
What an amazing comment. You're absolutely right as well. The strengthening of your feet, as well as your ankles and lower legs in general really make up the difference that protects against injury and makes you an all round better runner! Sounds like you're absolutely smashing it dude!
@christianlangfield93034 жыл бұрын
@@kalclashfitness thanks dude. Yeah strength and mobility are really important for performance and injury prevention in most sports, I didn't realise how important for running until I got injured so that's one suggestion for your channel, to do more strength and running technique videos, there's an endless amount of material there! By the way I've seen some other people mention Altra, if you try them I recommend the Escalate Racer, I think you'll find all the others too squishy (as I did) especially if you're used to very little cushion from Vibrams etc.

I’m currently gearing up to start wearing vibrams after about a year of running in super supportive brooks adrenalines. I have suffered from runners knee in my right leg, Achilles pain in my left, and foot pain in both. Not to mention sprained ankles about 2x yearly since I was 14. I kept putting more and more inserts in my shoes hoping to make the pain go away, and nothing worked. So, for the last three months I’ve been working on changing my foot strike to a forefoot strike from the heel strike I had been using. This alone has already decreased my pain tremendously. Knee pain, gone. Achilles pain, gone. However my forefoot keeps going numb like it’s not getting circulation after about 2 miles. So, I’m going to try vibrams to see if my toes being able to move helps with that. We will see. Thanks for the videos.:)

January this year I registered to first 5k mid night running competition with my collegues with no running experience whatsoever. I just thought it would be easy as just put sneakers on and run but little did I know it wasn’t as simple as that... My story is VERY similar to yours how I got into minimalist running shoes or barefoot shoes. I got lots of hip, shin, knee, achilles, heel pains and then got super padded shoes with pronation support that was recommended to me and it got even worse and had to have couple of weeks recovery after every run and finally after almost half an year I tried to run with my barefoot shoes that I’ve been using mainly just for walking around as my therapy and recovery shoes and my eyes have been opened since then. Almost instantly I got rid of running pains that pretty much prevented me enjoying running at all. Now it’s my new favourite hobby and I’m NEVER going back to conventional running shoes!

Comment for comment. Seriously though, I just started running seriously and your channel has helped a good amount. I've owned vapor glove 3s for about 2 years and walked around a lot with them so I'm somewhat used to barefoot/minimalist activities. Plus since I'm just started running, my cardio isn't high enough to over strain my feet/legs due to wearing the vapor gloves. Current goal is to go under 25mins for 5k within next month or two and hopefully in less than a year break 20mins. I am a 20 year old male, good nutrition (vegan for almost 2 years and mainly whole foods), so I'm hoping I'll break 20mins within a year.

Kalclash Fitness V Mate I hate auto correct what i meant to type was Altra and i use the Escalante 2.0, i use these for my longer runs over half marathon, they are light weight and zero drop with about 18mm of padding. You still have to run with good barefoot form as there is not enough heel padding to heel strike. The outsole rubber seems to be hard wearing and grippy all together a good shoe. Would love to hear your thoughts i them if you get the chance.

Hi mate, just seen this video and "the" other one. I started running in merrell vapor gloves and vivobarefoot shoes recently that a friend gave me to try. I LOVE them and it's almost instantly fixed my knee pain. It also makes running FUN - especially when running on slightly rough trails where you have to really look where you're stepping to dodge rocks and sticks. I am still doing some faster runs each week in my regular cushioned running shoes, but the plan is to get some zero-drop, lightly cushioned Altras to use for this instead.

I love minimalist shoes. Vibrams were my first love. I don't run in them exclusively anymore. I actually like Xero shoes better now....and I alternate between them and Altras (not quite minimalist...but still zero drop and very comfortable.) Even just for casual use I wear Xero shoes/sandals as much as I can to keep my feet strong.
@kalclashfitness4 жыл бұрын
I'll have to try the Altras at some point. The big thing for me is that they're zero drop - as long as the padding isn't too much...

I switched to Xero HFS shoes several weeks ago and have been really happy with them. Like you mentioned, I wouldn't say that going barefoot or wearing barefoot shoes is a miracle cure. But I think it can help tremendously. In the past couple of months, my feet to grow stronger and my running form has improved. No more overstriding, heel striking (which HURTS in barefoot shoes), etc. The things combined seem to have made me much less injury prone.

I moved to minimalist shoes about 7 years ago. I had been having constant shin splints issues with ‘normal’ running shoes but these vanished when I changed to minimalist shoes. I used to run in Vivobarefoot but their style doesn’t fit my wide feet anymore and I finally braved VFF this year and I absolutely love them! I run mainly trail and was meant to do my first trail marathon this year (cheers Covid for postponing that one 😒) but running in my new V Trek, thanks to your video recommending them, is great fun!

I started running several years ago and at the advice of a runner friend, got fitted with “good” running shoes. When I started I really didn’t think I’d enjoy it. But I did, and went in a few months from being unable to run a mile to running 5. My cardiovascular system loved it but my knees did not. I tried reducing it but it didn’t let up, so I ended up stopping. Luckily I still walked and biked a lot. So now I learned about “barefoot” shoes and got a pair since I spent most of my youth barefoot, and they are wonderful. After a month or so I started wondering if I could run in them. I started very slow; short distances to get used to a new way of running. At first I still heel struck, which I stopped very quickly. 😅 Then I overdid it a little in the forward direction and had sore/tight calves. Eventually I did get a good stride and worked on my cadence, and was careful to do short distances at a time. Really short, like half a mile. But I had some pain in my left calf, about halfway up. I went back to walking and it cleared up in a day, but I still held off for a week. Today I went out again for the first time and was careful, but it’s back. Not debilitating, I can walk with it no problem, but no way am I going to run with that. I’ll try and get it checked out soon. On the other hand, the knees feel great. :-)

Hi , firstly thank you and a great video. I ran good 6 months barefoot (just wanted to give it a try, I had no pain issues). My personal opinion Pros are that my form got better, the cadence improved by a good 5-6 steps per minute, lesser stress on the knees for sure. Cons i believe is the Achilles are a bit extra strained, maybe a little extra strain on the calves too. Presently I mix it up slow recovery days are barefoot days, fast tempo days are with running shoes.

It took a few months but my knee pain went away completely and is still gone at 60. I do have tired feet muscle soreness causing me to stretch my feet a lot but that's good, means I'm giving my feet a workout. Also I notice I walk much more quietly now, accidentally creeping up on people in the grocery store or whatever

Posture training and barefoot walking (later barefoot running, too) fixed all of my biomechanical problems and massively increased my physical health and fitness. But the transitioning from decades of shod to a barefoot lifestyle is a slow and steady process and it took me about 2 years of almost daily "training" to reach a state of leisurely barefoot running on any kind of ground. In the end, however, the path to greatness has to be tread barefoot!

I reposted it. 21 miles is now my furthest run in Vibrams. Whilst training for a 42 mile ultra marathon, which I then ran in Altra zero drop minimalist running shoes. I Made sure I tagged all the doubters in it. Hahaha. The ultra marathon was almost a year to the day after I came out of a spinal brace too. Got hit by a car, double spinal fracture. 15 months later I ran a 42 mile Ultra through the Brecon Beacons, in 50 mph winds in minimal shoes. Im using barefoot shoes now for 3 years and some months, and it has changed a lot of things in beneficial parts ! The only thing i'd advise is that it kindoff enlights ur physical problems where u never had any idea u had them ! (happened to me when i wanted to give a go to running after 6 months in them and i had to stop 2 days after and have 3 months of legs recovery coz actually, i didnt know my glutes and lateral legs muscles were so weak ! (the ones that helps u stabilize the legs and feet posture actually) But that problem was already there before the shoes switch, but kinda hidden. Further example, i use casual non barefoot flip flops for inside the house and after too much time into it i started to have back pain. Then switched to having inside amazon barefoot shoes (that are just for inside and held good for winters) and instantly i felt a relief ! So... to sum it up, yes, it can helps alleviate pain and get rid of some, make you grow super muscles in feet, calves etc, but in my opinion, the issues u had previously u gotta be aware and tend to them in order to have a balanced physical body. Thanks for reading xD

My first comment on the internet ever! I walk around barefoot in my house and use Merrell Vapor Gloves as regular shoes (work, shopping ...). They may not be the nicest looking but they work great for me. I used to run in minimal shoes up to marathon distance. The Merrell Road Glove was my favorite shoe. I do not like the staring when running in FiveFingers or having to explain why I run in them. The tread pattern of the Trail Glove feels like pebbles on the road and I find the Vapor Glove too minimalist for off-road running. Still looking out for minimalist shoes to go back to. So I transitioned back to regular shoes (for my running only) and found I ran faster in them as I no longer feel every twig on the ground.

In the past, I have suffered from a myriad of running-related injuries and have tried many different types of shoe. About 3 years ago I started running in Altra (zero-drop) shoes as a means to transition to Vibram Five Fingers soon after. This worked well and for over 3 years I have suffered from most of my old injuries. Within a couple of months of purchasing my first pair of Five Fingers I ran a hilly half marathon with no problems. Some time ago I was diagnosed with arthritis in one knee (caused by fell racing) and advised not to run by the Doc; that was not going to happen! Running in minimalist shoes (Five Fingers and Altra Escalante Racers) has kept this injury under control and it has even improved it. I am currently running at least 50kms per week and I am in my late 50s. PS They are really comfy for any use.

I suffered numerous sprained ankle back in my younger days (basketball) due to not resting enough and then it became a chronic instability (meaning my ligaments are loose, prone to injury and feeling of unstability), which im still suffering in a way (my fault for keeping on dancing while in pain- the swing fever). Anyway, now, 25yo ive retaken running (i used to do 10k and halfM.. decent timing too, sub40 in 10k, 19yo) but noticed that regular shoes didnt feel quite right so I bought the 5fingers, used them twice and no signs of instability for now. Still early to tell but i have good vibes.

regarding athritis. a lot of people have it. For most it's caused by inflammation, in the joints. remove inflammatory foods, from your diet CAN help it. (Worth a shot, if you suffer from this!) :) Anyways. great lil' video! interesting for me, looking for some "barefoot running info" i'm still very much in doubt. should i run in "minimalist shoes" ?ACTUAL barefoot? I've never tried the sandals. A lot of people have recommended them. Are you sure it's caused by the sandals? Maybe the fit of them?

Hi again! So today I ran for the first time in my brand new five fingers. This is how I feel about them. They do not affect my bunion at all, since being soft like socks they do not put pressure on it. However, I find the big toe area quite tight. It's ok so far, but I have space around all toes, except the big toe. Maybe I would need one size up. I am not sure, but it was quite nice to take them off after two hours. Overall, I love them and will try them out as often as I can! I can feel pain in my calves after the run, which is exactly as described in your videos. Nothing major, but I can see how new muscles are engaged in a new way. I have my hip pain back.. Awful! The cause won't probably be the shoes.
@kalclashfitness4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kate, I would say just take things slowly. Really focus on technique and see how your body reacts. The toe area might loosen up a bit through wear.

Omg Steve I followed your videos for a little while about 2 years ago. You're so ripped now! You look like you could kill someone with 1 punch XD. Saitama approves. More on topic, I started running in 5-fingers after running my first 21km with regular high heels Asics shoes and having one of my knees hurt for about a week! I have been running with 5-fingers and Altras ever since and the knee pain is completely gone! (Now some minor inner-tight pain came out on longer runs, but I think it's just because I'm not training so regularly, so when I push beyond my fitness level I feel the consequences :P)

Besides Vibram’s what are your favorite minimalist shoes?
@HenryTheBoilermaker3rdYear4 жыл бұрын
I've gotten blisters using them. Vibrams shoes never again. And the insole durability is terrible in the toe area. I can't believe people still use them. And I did get knee joint pain using them.
@kalclashfitness4 жыл бұрын
Blisters can be prevented, but can't argue the 2nd point to be fair the durability is not good considering the price.

Hi, thank you for uploading the video in order to answer my question. The only thing you did not cover was the problem with a bunion. Are the shoes too narrow? I have bought a pair now, waiting for it to arrive. I will test it and see how it goes. It might be useful info for many people who suffer from bunions. And I will see whether my knee and hip pain improves or not. Thank you a lot for this 😊
@kalclashfitness4 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry I did mean to mention this. It will depend on the size of the bunion. As long as you can get the shoes on, then hopefully it shouldn't cause you any discomfort
@katerinastruncova6114 жыл бұрын
@@kalclashfitness the bunion isn't that big, but any narrow shoe causes it to ache. I am so keen on trying thoes shoes out, even just for walking. I will soon know and then can give feedback on it if someone is interested 😊
