THIS IS A RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION I TWEETED! I was so excited when they spent lots of time answering it
@thegrizzly5211 ай бұрын
the disc manufacturers really only care about selling discs. Do you buy a Calvin destroyer because it’s the right disc for you? No you buy it because Calvin is an amazing player and you like him. And on the flip side of the coin you buy a Brody zone because it’s a great disc and because you like Brodies internet presence and personality. What I think makes the most sense from an “open bag” player perspective is to approach companies with a disc idea and only make money off of the discs that you sell. Work out a percentage deal, create a signature disc and then sell the shit out of that disc. Do it for 2 or 3 different companies. You go to innova and say I’d like a moon dust firebird or whatever. Create the disc, create a business plan to sell x number of discs and go out there and hustle. Then you go to discraft and do the same thing. And then go to mvp or whatever company and do the same thing. I think most players, especially the fringe top players would be smart to get in front of a camera or have ownership in a store and create more marketability and more value added
@ryanmussell73911 ай бұрын
True. I follow Bodanza and I bought 3 discs when he went to infinity.
@devanpries933511 ай бұрын
For the most part, all discs are copies of Innova’s original molds. The only difference are plastic types, colors and branding different companies offer. The aviar, roc, teebird, firebird, destroyer are all being made by each company just in their own way. Innova started the flight number system so it’s hard not to copy.Having an open bag would give players freedom to choose but at the end of the day, all discs are pretty much the same. As long as a company has a decent lineup, players don’t need an open bag to be the best they can.
@lynch42o11 ай бұрын
this right here!
@orion774111 ай бұрын
LOL. thats one of the dumbest things I have read in a LONG time.... Innova only has A FEW molds that are "original". Discraft was the one that really started introducing new and original disc molds. Innova really is the one that started copying molds from Discraft.
@devanpries933511 ай бұрын
If this is the dumbest thing you’ve read in a long time, I’m guessing you don’t read much. Innova came out with the first disc golf discs with beveled rims. DGA came out with catch discs in the late 70s and early 80s but these weren’t disc golf specific discs. Do your research cuz

Or Discraft molds like a Buzzz, Zone, or a slightly more OS Comet that flies like a Buzzz as really only other clones I see being made by more then one company.

Maybe we can split up the bag and have sub sponsors on speed slots. Ex: MVP from 1 to 4 speed, Discraft from speed 5 to 7, etc...) but have a main sponsor that you wear gear for

@OldMan1092311 ай бұрын
The same way in golf when people get club sponsors they can only play with those clubs. Why people sponsored by by coke can’t drink Pepsi products. Why people sponsored by Nike can’t wear under armor. It’s an exclusive agreement

I agree to a point. But if you look at the NBA. Players will have a team sponsor and personal sponsors. They may wear a Nike or Jordan jersey but may wear another companies shoes.

Isn't the major factor in this the fact that manufacturers are bringing all the money into the sport for players. There isn't big TV money or even a high percentage of money coming in from viewership. So as long as the manufacturers are relied on for the income of players they would never give up any leverage to sell discs.
@andruboine11 ай бұрын
They bring it to a small amount of players.
@aray544511 ай бұрын
Explain. Because I think counting indirect contribunions, it's easily the manufacturers making the largest dole-out. If not, who do you think is?
@JTNorton11 ай бұрын
From a manufacturer (sponsor) point of view; if I "manufacturer" give you money for your season your bag will NOT be an open bag. As a player... if "I'm" paying for my discs even at a discounted rate "ambassador" and paying for my tournament entry fees my bag will be open. If you not a top 20 player you not demanding anything from anyone. Unless you bring something else to the table/course like a strong social media presence or a podcast with an audience.

For now anyway it seems it's really a lack of willingness from the bigger brands. Discraft turned down Gibson to sponsor him w/ the buzzz even though he might be the best buzzz thrower in the world
@caseysmith54411 ай бұрын
I think soon a Backpack Sponsorship or similar deal will be happening when a major sports brand Nike, Adidas, Puma or even outdoor brands like North Face, Columbia or even a Camelback make a Disc golf backpack and pay way more then what a normal Disc Golf Backpack brand currently does due to company and player can have an open bag. Same for even a just a clothing/shoe sponsor stepping up sponsorship on players so an open bag is a thing. Other side I see more of these Disc Seller companies able to step up on sponsorship so players can have any disc company sells, almost all brands models except Discontinued models if this is a rule for sales or something. I also see players playing with multiple mini sponsorships of disc golf items from bag to a disc retriever and disc towels/training equipment towels that equals or is greater then a single disc manufacture sponsorship in mid level touring sponsorship.
@gregrussell178711 ай бұрын
I fail to believe that any top pro is going to be better with an open bag. Unless they're one of those startup manufacturers with 3 discs.

I don't see it getting to that point. What if one person just dominates a year, wins all the big purses, and has a high dollar sponsorship? Or even say it's always the same top 10 winning the big money. They might have the leverage to say I want a mixed/open bag, but the rest will need sponsorships.

Be real no one needs a mixed bag. Most all the companies make a complete lineup where it does not matter what brand you are throwing
@sofaspud51811 ай бұрын
I dislike the constant comparison of ultimate to disc golf, they are two vastly different sports. They share similarity in the fact that they're both "flying discs" but that's where it ends (in my opinion). I had to force myself into field work to essentially re-learn my form from the ground up. If anything having ultimate form hard wired hurt me in the short term. Would love to see a video where we take people from a few sports and teach them how to throw a disc. Personally I bet a tennis/racquet ball player has an easier time transitioning to a disc than an ultimate guy.
@atpete0711 ай бұрын
It’s not a hot take at all to say that a pro would be there best at open bag…. There’s a reason why when an am decides ‘I’m only bagging one company’, they get the response ‘why would you do that?’ Innova doesn’t make a berg, discraft doesn’t make a Roc, MVP JUST got a destroyer clone…. Meanwhile open bag, every single slot is covered.. every one. Really the only company you can go to and find just about any flight is Innova. Let’s not forget, Discraft didn’t even have a Teebird until recently
@matthewbertram431211 ай бұрын
Really, if it gets to that point, players will be able to sell themselves better. And they will likely turn to selling percentages or static figures. i.e. Discraft pays Brodie specifically to promote and throw the Zone. Or Innova makes a deal with Calvin that his bag has at least 6 molds, and Clash pays him to bag and throw at least 2 molds, etc.
@goodnerarts120611 ай бұрын
The only way this could happen right now is for the pro to already have money or have a big built-in audience outside of disc golf. Like Brodie I suppose, but with years of experience and a mixed bag. This person could come in and say, "If I bag it, you know the disc is legit."
@Wombat300011 ай бұрын
Probably the only guy that could legitimately do that right now would be McBeth. Obviously it isn't gonna happen, but if he suddenly decided that Discraft wasn't for him and he wanted an open bag that would probably change the landscape overnight
@WesGarnett11 ай бұрын
These comments make no sense. Manufactures in any sport are the pivot point between watching and participating for fans. If the average touring pro could make 6-7 figures playing disc golf alone, that would happen because the viewership has grown enough to make that possible … which also means more people are investing in the the products of the sport. Today players have to depend on manufacturers to make a living but in the future they’ll partner with manufacturers to grow their brand and their earning potential by extension. While some players might feel better auctioning off slots in their bag, the easiest relationship for most will always be a full bag sponsor - for both the player and the manufacturer (im thinking shoe deals with Nike as an example). It’s more likely that people will extend their brand to other aspects of the game - water bottles, bags, towels, shoes, etc etc. Some of that is already happening but it’s to help the player make a living. Soon beef jerky and energy drink partnerships won’t be as big of a deal as it is today.
@ianwilson932511 ай бұрын
If pro disc golfers want people to start taking them seriously these contracts need to be made public. The fact of the matter is nobody knows what “disc golf” money is.
