Just found your channel. As a small engine technician, i was super impressed with the 750 hours! I tell people all the time CHANGE YOUR OIL, and just doing simple things like changing plugs and cleaning air filters will give triple the life, if not more. Maybe a valve adjustment is due 😂 Also, putting a few teaspoons of marvel mystery oil will definitely help with high temperature running. May foul a plug here and there, but who cares? They're cheap. Stay cool my friend and stay free! 😊

The older Yamaha 4 stroke golf cars had dipsticks stamped wrong too, if you put more than a quart or topped it off to the mark, it would saturate the air filter with oil and stop running.

I got a Firman generator 3650 watts and 4550 starting watts. It weighs 119 pounds, which is heavy but you can order it with a wheel kit, extra carb jets for different altitudes up to 8000 feet which will make it run much smoother. Firman sent me the additional jets for free. It will obviously handle a ton of extra draw, especially a homestead situation and that's why I bought it. It cost $350 at Amazon and the wheel kit about $32. Oh and it has a 5 gallon capacity, hence it will run for about 12 hours and has a bottle opener built in, lol. Doesn't take much to amuse beer drinkers ;)

I'm all thumbs up here. Great ideas for homeless folks to live in comfort. I wonder if an oil filter could add life to generators like this. Maybe a little 12v oil scavenge gear pump and inline power steering filter (also used on some automatic transmissions). A salvaged cordless drill speed control could slow the pump down. It could tap the unused 12v output (I knew there just had to be some good use for it). Worst case might be an oil leak causing loss of oil, but the built in shutdown would prevent engine damage leaving only the cleanup.

I used that Reflectix stuff on my home garage doors. it worked so well, that after almost 20 years of living here, it helped me discover that my HVAC was leaking cold air into it... and why my tools would rust badly within a year or two. This stuff insulated the doors so well, that the AC leak actually cooled my garage and was able to hold a temperature (until you opened those doors) So i opted to keep this going and just run a dehumidifier to prevent condensation and rust. I like my Yamaha generator. I've had it for 3 years. All I do is change the oil and put gas in it...its fairly quiet and the gas on/off switch makes clearing the carb of gas possible, so the carb doesnt foul.
@belavet3 жыл бұрын
I picked this up because we heat our house with a pellet stove and wanted the peace of mind that if we do have a power outage, we can stay warm. I read that many were changing oil multiple times in the first hour of running. I did that (one oil change every 20 minutes of run time for a total of three). Outside of that is there anything I should do? Minimum amount of time I should run? Run the gas tank dry on storage? I know you want to run the carb dry which only takes seconds. Just want this thing to fire up when we need it to in the winter. It will likely see little to no use in the summer beyond what would be recommended for maintenance.

HOBOTECH how long is your extension cord and what gauge if you know? Can you still run the air conditioner all summer even if its 105+ degrees inside your van? I've got an easy way you can add propane with a standard BBQ tank that holds 4.2 through 4.6 gallons of propane. They say propane has less power than gasoline. That is true but in the long run you will save money and your generator will last alot longer and never come Out Of Tune on propane. Gasoline will give problems eventually and stop working. Propane is more dependable then gasoline fuel. With propane the oil never gets dirty, the spark plug never gets dirty. Propane never goes bad, you can also put a King Kooker regulator inline and adjust it very simply by the pitch of the motor for maximum fuel efficiency. Propane is easy to add if you're interested message me. I'll point you how to do it yourself it's very easy. And without buying an expensive propane conversion kit. Also a propane engine will last two to three times longer. And where I'm from you can get a propane tank filled up for around $10 but you got to shop to find that deal. Also you won't have to fill the gasoline fuel tank up as much on propane. Even if the carburetor dies you can still simply run propane. And you can start any gasoline engine on propane like your van. A half a gallon of gas your running the AC. 5 through 9 hours is impressive! Maximum fuel efficiency on the littlest engine possible is the name of the game! I'm working on going off Grid too.

I bought that generator under the Dirty Hands brand about 3 years ago, almost double the price. Never smoked. Changed the oil yesterday. I'd gripe about that price but it has been solid and it really will charge a battery bank when solar is not working. I've looked at the Westinghouse. In low humidity I like evaporative coolers. I've had a Swampy for 10 years and they have a hose so it brings in fresh air. Most people don't realize tht running them inside just raises the humidity, without a fresh air source. The RV coolers had a following when I started, 80's, and these were roof mount. You need some water. They basically cool you if you are in the air stream. With a van build you could get around R12 with the best foam. Then you could try a split heat pump. Depends on how the technology develops. Solar is cheap. Lithium is getting cheaper, especially if you import from China. The heat pumps are super efficient, even for heating. Mike, I suggest something with a power selector. The Sportsman has a hard time running anything over 600 watts and you have to factor in a 20% loss in most battery chargers. I have a Progressive Dynamics 55 amp and if my batteries are below 80% charged I have to manually kick it down into a lower voltage charge for the generator to be able to start the charge cycle.
@geebonzo5 жыл бұрын
@mike brink When I had two flooded deep cycles in a trailer I was using a 20 amp MFJ power supply (ham radio). It's adjustable so you can start with a low voltage and build up to whatever amps the generator will handle. You can manual charge Lifepo lithium with this setup. I have a 20 amp charger made for RC Lipo stuff that is programmable for Lifepo4, just hook these up to a power supply. The RC charger I have has a 20 amp AC power supply. I have a Lifepo bank with 4 used 180 AH cells, and they are a pretty close match to lead. Much better tech than lead. www.dxengineering.com/parts/mfj-4245mv?seid=dxese1&cm_mmc=pla-google-_-shopping-_-dxese1-_-mfj&gclid=CjwKCAjw7_rlBRBaEiwAc23rhi8UggSnaWWSh9JtJy_-EHUjeSb51Tukkioluwg0PHChfdlrC-wKbRoCyGYQAvD_BwE

I have a siphon setup on my Onan that lets me pull gas from the van's tank (covered in a prior video). However, I have to run the Onan for the fuel pump to work. Currently the Onan needs a $200 part to run. I find it easier to carry a 2.5 gallon can. Let's me run to a gas station to refill and I keep more accurate readings of fuel consumption.

@spyder0000694 жыл бұрын
Mine lasted about 24 hours of light use spread apart in hour sessions over 2 years. It actually smoked a cyberpower surge protector and then any load over 200 watts would trip the overload. Its too bad because my engine ran great and was well taken care of. However, a replacement inverter was $150 and the whole unit can be had for $200 so it didn't make sense to repair it. So I am going to try a WEN 1250 next. My main use for the small generators is to run my electric hedge clippers as I go around the property. The sportsman 1000 did that well until it died after a storm knocked out our power and I was using the little generator to run our internet equipment.

Not a bad price for that Sportsmen genny, even though its a bit loud. Is 5w-30 the recommended oil for that genny? Seems a bit thin for this time of year. I would try a 10w-30 or even a straight 30 motor oil which should smoke less. The Marvel Mystery oil will add to the smoking . The Westinghouse is made in China as well. Then again my Honda eu2000i is made in Thailand, not Japan. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, it's not as loud as the camera lets on. Although it is louder since new. Manual says 10w-30 and that's what I been using up to the last oil change, but the winter weight makes no difference when it is hot. It smokes because it is over-filled. It's hard to guess how much to put in when the dipstick is wrong. Unfortunately, everything is made in China but Westinghouse warrants their gennys for 3 years.

im wondering if you experimented with noise reduction plywood around the generator angled away from it so the ground absorbs the noise?

@Hobotech, First I love your videos. But how much solar would you need to run that 5k AC, as in, maintain the same charge on batteries. Thus run the AC during heat of day? I am thinking about getting a Jackery just for this reason and solar panels, like the Jackery 1000.

Is a propane generator quieter at 1000? And wud U suggest propane to gas?
@HOBOTECH5 жыл бұрын
Propane is just as loud. It's not the type of fuel but design of the generator. I don't recommend propane for RV/van living because it has a much lower energy content than gasoline. Propane also doesn't like temperatures below 20F and in most of the country is well over $3/gal. So propane puts out less power and costs more to run. However, for an off grid cabin scenario propane is better especially if you can get it delivered in bulk.

I have a Sportsman 1800/2200 watt generator and I'm having trouble finding a roll around portable air conditioner that will work with my little generator in my van. You would think I could power a 6,000 to 10,000 btu unit rated for 1000 or 1100 watts but it will only start the 2 units I've tried and overload after 5 minutes or so. I've tried multiple times with each type of AC unit. Can you recommend a unit that draws a lot less wattage in a rolling portable AC unit? Maybe 5,000 btu and 700 watts or so?

I'm going to be in AZ for a while still.
@bruceh37865 жыл бұрын
AZ runs from just above sea level to over 9,000 ft so you never have to leave the state to enjoy good weather. Too bad AZ does not have a great state parks pass program like New Mexico. However there is a lot of BLM, Forest and State Trust land for boondocking.
@HOBOTECH5 жыл бұрын
Bruce H, AZ is also overcrowded and 9%-10% sales tax is most counties reminds me of living in CA. Finding good boondocking sites away from others is a challenge during the fall to spring stint just because everyone knows AZ is the best place to be during winter. NM offers the parks pass only because no one wants to go there!
@bruceh37865 жыл бұрын
Sale tax varies between the towns. Chandler is a combined total of 7.8% whereas Quartzsite is 10.1% Cottonwood is a hefty 9.8%. The city of Phoenix is 8.6% but no sales tax on food at the state or city level. Sales tax is higher than Idaho but I think ID does have a state tax on groceries. Unfortunately, Wild Turkey with Honey is not considered food. Actually I have found it harder to find nice boondocking spots in AZ during the summer when school is out and the residents are heading up north to beat the heat. New Mexico has some nice areas so some folks are missing out. I hope you have some nice spots planned for your remaining time in AZ.
