I work in a small groomers/veterinary clinic in mexico and almost all the dog we get are extremely matted and most are somewhat aggressive if not extremely aggressive. In my opinion in some cases it's better for both us and the animal to be sedated. For example a few months ago we got a matted and aggressive dog, this dog the first time we did her while she was awake and she bit her owner and the other groomer and this was just while we tried to get he on to the table. Have in mind I'm in a small town in mexico and most people don't care much for their animals, so yesterday the same dog came in and the owner refused to help, so my boss (the veterinarian) told him if he didn't stay we would 1; sedate the dog or 2; not receive her. He choose 1 and left. Honestly there are a lot of clients that are like that here and a bunch of (as we call them) "roof dogs". Which are dogs that are forgotten for long periods of time. For us It is common to receive a dog that hasn't been to a groomer in at least a year. It's very sad to see so many animal like that but someone has to do it. Having this in mind sometime it's better for the dog to be sedated (at least where I live)so that it doesn't hurt itself cause 90% of the owners here will NOT help with the dog, believe me I've tried. I love your videos they have helped me so much. Keep doing what you're doing. Much love from Mexico ❤

I also live in Mexico and what you are saying is completely true. People get long haired dogs just because they’re cute but they never brush and or comb the dog. Most dog owners here are very irresponsable. I’ve always owned poodles, bichons, Yorkshires and other long haired breeds. I enjoy grooming them and would never let my dogs get matted. I have them get used to getting groomed since they’re puppies to aviso these situations.

Folks, sometimes there's just no choice and a dog must be sedated. I rescued a yorkie 5 years ago, half dead, teeth so rotten that she could not close her mouth, a system wide infection from the rotten teeth, heart murmur, sinus' mostly eaten away from the infections, lungs as black as soot with pneumonia. How she survived all of this is beyond me...but fast forward 5 years, she has never adapted to grooming with anyone including myself and know I must come to terms that she will require sedation to get her thru a groom to avoid all the trauma she goes thru. I don't know what her life was like prior to the adoption, but I know it was nothing good. Oh did I mention that she is completely blind? After 5 years of grooming sessions on a monthly basis she continues with the high stress drama and gets worse not better. But aside from that my baby is a gift from heaven, she is a sweet girl, she is a champ. I really have learned so much from this video. Thank you Dede for posting! How I wish you were in North Carolina!

My dog didn't have a traumatic past, he's always been regularly groomed and taken care of and loved. He STILL bites when he's being brushed or getting a haircut. He's 13.5. He's done it his whole life. He's a sweet dog that loves to be petted and played with and he's a great family dog. Except he's a poodle mix with poodle hair that doesn't want to be brushed or groomed around his head or feet. Some dogs, you just can't change it. Every groomer that has seen him tells me to take him to a vet and have him sedated for a haircut. But around here that's around $200, every couple of months. We use a muzzle and give him at home haircuts.

Vet tech here! I'm not a huge fan of ace as it doesn't have any anti anxiety effects and it can cause hypersensitivity which doesn't help the behavior modification process. It immobilizes the dog but can actually make the experience more frightening. I prefer trazodone as it is a anti-anxiety medication and a sedative and it does not cause hypersensitivity- it doesn't impact the organ systems as much as ace either. I think giving the really fearful animals trazodone and introducing what they are afraid of in a calm situation is more beneficial in behavior modification than flooding a fearful animal until it shuts down. In more geriatric animals sedation may be safer for them (as long as they have current blood work) than using three people to hold them down and the risk of hurting themselves or someone else.

AwwwSweetieDarling Gabapentin is a good one too! We use it a lot for aggressive patients (especially cats) It's also a pain control so it's good for animals that may be painful. Oral sedatives that are sent home are different than sedatives that are used in in house sedated nail-trims, oral exams etc. Those are usually intramuscular injections and the animal needs to be monitored and reversed if they go "to deep". If I was a groomer I would not groom an animal if one of those sedatives were used unless I am in a hospital with reversals and a doctor on hand.

Ace is scary stuff. It was prescribed for my pibble after surgery. She had severe anxiety and I asked for something else but was told she would be fine on it. She screamed and whined the whole night then chewed her way out of her crate with a cone on. Even with me camped outside her crate with her siblings. When the Vet office called the next morning to see how she was doing, they could hear her. When I told them what happened, they told me to come in immediately for trazadone. Ace can make high energy dogs aggressive and hyper. Please encourage the senior gals pet parent to ask her vet for something different. It makes them all have those crazy sad loopy eyes :(

Our vet gave us gabapentin for our cat before he goes in for check-ups. I'm pretty sure it made him more of a jerk. Then the ER Vet told us that he may just need a higher dose because he is a bigger guy. (Highly aggressive cat with a sprained leg was not a fun morning last week) Looking into doing that with him when we schedule a groom (he is a DLH that does not groom himself well) - the groomer works onsite with the vet's office, however, so I trust it would be safe and I wouldn't do anything without vet approval.

Jennifer Helland I get Trazodone, it’s been prescribed to me to aide in Sleep.. but Gabapentin shocks me! I get that they take a tiny dose as opposed to my ridiculous dose, but I take it for joint pain from Psoriatic Arthritis and neuropathy.. lol how that translates to a tranquilizer is beyond me as I take a high dose.

Personally, Dede - I am glad this one was sedated. It's clear to me you get attacked and bitten way too often. There are no "nippers" - a dog either bites you or it doesn't. "Nipper" is the word used by bad owners of small dogs to rationalize and minimize their own failures.

Being a senior citizen on a fixed income, getting a professional grooming is something that we sometimes have to stretch out as far as we can. Not that we want to because we love our fur babies! This client probably couldn't handle getting her dog into a vehicle by herself if it doesn't like to go in a car! Yes newspaper covers, or plastic bags of any sort you can get for free makes a great poop bag if you can't afford to purchase them! Don't be to critical of her...for her age and income she was doing a pretty good job and you could tell she loved her fur baby!

I am not a professional groomer but have had Schnauzers since childhood. My dad always groomed them and I was his helper. I took over the grooming in my teenage years. I do an excellent Schnauzer cut, but that is the only cut I know! I feel that if you know how to dose your dog properly to just a relaxed state without going overboard it can make a huge difference in their grooming experience. If a stressed dog is dosed just enough to take the edge off they will still be aware and see that grooming really isn't so bad and hopefully won't need a sedative after a few good experiences.

I feel like these videos are incredibly educational for not just other dog groomers but for pet owners. I get my two dogs groomed every 12 weeks. I have a tremendous amount of appreciation for dog groomers. From these videos I've learned to brush my dogs properly and constantly, how to wash their face and get those eye buggers out, and how to prevent ear infections when bathing by not letting water in the ear. My 2 year old shitzu Queso, is highly prone to ear infections when any sort of water gets in his ears. Thank goodness I found this channel a year ago! He has not had another ear infection since!

Also let us humanize the dog, if I would be in a situation where something is hurting me and I need to get it done I would most definitely rather put to sleep and get it done than living trough it. It’s not easy being a groomer! This gave me a lot of insight into the process… thank you! I adopted a chiweenie from our local shelter that does not do well being bathed and nails trimmed. She has bitten myself, my husband and the groomer. My groomer recommended Prozac for her on a daily basis and gabapentin as an additional help when a stressful time pops up. I talked to my vet and she prescribed those. The Prozac has helped her immensely just be calmer daily without her seeming drugged. She is just calmer. I am so stressed about her next bath and nail trim but I would like to try the sedative in this video until she gets used to it. This video was a big help understanding.

I’ve been a groomer for 10 years and own my own salon. I only have one poodle that comes in on ACE he’s not nearly as knocked out as that dog he can still jump and bark and move. I normally do not groom dogs on sedatives for the sole fact when I worked for numerous salons in Las Vegas there was an incident at a salon where the owner gave her elderly cocker spaniel a sedative. I’m not sure what it was, but they were old and had broken up inside the bottle( this was the owner telling the groomer that) she decided to give the dog ALL the rest that was in the bottle..... why I don’t know the lady had control issues of her own. Soon after the groomer started on the dog it was muzzled upon arrival by the mother, the dog was fighting the groomer and all of a sudden the dog collapsed and passed away right in front of everyone. Owner was IMMEDIATELY called. We later found out by the vet the dog had the equivalent of about 5 or so pills it had sedated him too much and because he was muzzled he couldn’t breathe as heavily as his body needed and his heart stopped, his heart rate was slowed down by the sedatives and he couldn’t be revived. This incident is the #1 reason me or any groomers do not groom sedated pets. If your pet is on a sedative and goes to a groomer regular blood test need to be done if thepet is elderly to see if there body can take the sedative.

This girl looks so much like my old guy, Parker. He was taller and slender, more poodle-like, and he hated his feet being touched. I once went to pick him up from a groomer and found they had sedated him without my knowledge or consent. We never went back to that shop. Parker has been gone for over 10 years and seeing that little girl's cute face brought him near. Thank you for what you do. You're awesome.

As a past groomer, so yeah I know, sedated is not great but slow down since she’s sedated go easier she’s 11 you don’t gotta rush, push and pull. Poor thing needs a shave down at that age to avoid matting because the owner is also older and can’t brush her out fully

When I saw this I was a little upset with the sedation, but in some cases it can't be helped and has to be done. The benefits outweigh the cons. On the other hand, my long haired black shepherd loves loves LOVES the groomers. He will sit there and let them brush him all day if they wanted! (Benefits of being a CVT dog is they get used to being in a veterinary environment and poked and prodded with everything and anything.) He is so desensitized he just sits there for blood draws with no restrainer. He would love you! I know you get a lot of difficult cases, I would love to see some behaved cases as well, if you have them.

I would prefer a dog jumping around and being crazy, with training and time the dog would get used to it. A dog that is sedated would probably feel scared because they feel like they cant protect themselves(biting etc which they shouldn’t)and that would make them more scared and fearful of the groomer.

I am not a groomer, but long time owner. We had an older rescue dog that was terrified of storms. Completely inconsolable, darting around, very rapid heart rate. The vet gave her some type of medication for anxiety to help her through storms. She ended up taking the medicine 5 or 6 times and then it dawned on her that she was now safe. Didn’t need the medicine at all. She ended up sleeping through storms. My point is that maybe light sedation may not have to be forever.

I didn't ask for an animal to be sedated, neither do I know anything about it. However I'd rather see an animal mildly (less than Rosie) sedated than one that is whining , fighting, growling and who is anxious and afraid. If it's so upset that it's shaking, trying to bite, and do damage to everyone within range maybe it should be considered.. The dog just wants it all to stop. Of course it can''t. Those are the dogs I feel sorry for. That's when the whole experience becomes a nightmare for them. If the dog is mean and will bite then it's up to her how she wants to handle it. Dede is skilled and really knows what she's doing. I say she deserves a metal for bravery and skill lol So you (Dede) have to make the call. Hugs

It took me 8 months to teach my pup from 8 weeks to accept the table. His trick was to be able to climb up himself, and me investing in a grooming arm. I learned my tricks from you, and now at 11 months, he climbs up and stands til we finish. Hard work, elbow grease, and no paired with good, works, with repetition. Many times I wished he was out like a light. But he wouldn't learn a dang thing. He is a dominant OES. But it can be done, with patience and persistence. Big win for him was learning to climb up himself. We learned the pick up caused a big reaction. A grooming arm is a huge help! Thanks Dede! Now groom a sheepdog and show some ear plucking please! Hi just to let you know that you can get different strength of that tablets but I have had to use that tablet for my horse and I only gave my big horse 1 of those tablets and it affected my horse for 2 day's with that tablets which the vet gave me to give my horse, like I said I know that you can get different strengths. I used to clip horse's clipping the hair off the horse's so we could exercise the horse without it sweating and then getting a chill in winter. I wonder what strength of tablet that dog had? I never liked using sedation on any animal just to give it a hair cut I know how dangerous it can be if a dog bites but it's also can be even worse when you are clipping a horse's belly and it tries to kick or rear but I would rather try and work with the animals to gain trust slowly then have a sedated animal which can't learn to trust you cause they are so drugged up plus I do agree that it's not good for system to try and get rid of the sedation. Also do people understand what it feels like to be so drugged up and how long it takes to feel better again? I know how difficult and dangerous it is to groom problem animals but I am totally with you and I would much prefer to work with the animals to build the trust in you and show the animals that you understand and that you can do it together without hurting them! I love your video's and I have learned a lot from them so thank you very much for all your work and efforts that go into making these videos. Take care and God bless you all. Kelli xxx

I've mentioned this in a comment on an earlier video, but thought I'd put it out there again: there are a lot of calming chews for dogs products out there now, that do not contain drugs; they contain natural ingredients. It's obviously not as effective as a knock-out drug from a vet, like the one given to the dog in this video, but it will lower the dog's anxiety level, so that the groom isn't as much of an ordeal for the groomer or the dog. The one we used for our rescue dog when we first got him is called true hemp, and I can attest to it helping to reduce his anxiety level quite a bit. It mellows him out, but does not incapacitate him at all. We have been working with him at home, and he is at a point now where his groomer can handle him much more easily without extra help from one of us.

Poor baby, eyes were not even focused. How confusing for the dog. I think sedating would only make them fear the groomer more because for sure she did not enjoy feeling drunk. I think they would feel too out of control and increase fear. Great job Dede. I used a sedative called Ace years ago for my cocker spaniel. The house behind us was hit by lightening, and startled both of us. the noise was unbelievably loud, resulted in great fear of storms. Never did work.

I wondered the same thing. I do my friends Cocker Spaniels and my Shih Tzu. I get an even cut going the opposite way of the growth. I am, by no means, a groomer! Just trial and error. I've thought about using a very mild sedative on my Shih Tzu cuz he doesn't like his face or front paws done. But after seeing this, I'll put up with giving him a break then resuming, talking gently to him, hoping someday he'll stand still like you see in videos to giving him drugs. Maybe I'll have my bf exhale a little pot smoke his direction but not ever gonna give him doggy downers!

Sorry about a second post but, I have a curiosity question. If you have an aggressive dog that has been traumatised and you sedate it a few times for a groom, will the dog then realise that you are not there to hurt it and then eventually let you groom with out the sedation and with out displaying aggression? Im not a promoter for sedation ,I think its more a question for behavior modification. Comments welcome because Im just here for my own enjoyment and I am not a groomer.

In my experience (not as a groomer but rescuer), sedation just adds more to the long term anxiety issues. Spaced out, no control over their situation, no understanding of why or how it has happened. Sedation has its place but does not offer any long term behavioural benefits at all. Xx

I am a groomer that works in a vet clinic. I do aggressive dogs daily. Yes you can turn a dog around. It usually take a few years and a lot of trust building but it can be done. Ace stops or slows the release of serotonin. Serotonin is what triggers the fight flight or freeze in animals and humans. Ace slows the body and mind enough for a groomer that knows how to recondition a dog.

My vet recommends using children's benadryl if I need to calm my dog (he's very afraid of thunderstorms) and it calms him down but doesn't zonk him out! Not sure I'd give him that for a groom though. At least it is OTC and isn't highly potent. Curious to see if Dede has ever had anyone use benadryl for grooming sedation? Have to say that any dog that old shouldn't be getting sedatives. It's just like an elderly human being. Nobody does surgery on an elderly patient unelss it is life or death because of the risk of not waking back up.

With the age and alleged temperament of this dog, the sedation was possibly the best way to go. She is probably arthritic and has some joint pain at all times which will make any animal lash out, even if not aggressive. Not only is the dog less likely to become aggressive but, she was relaxed enough to lay down and be moved as needed without resistance which could have caused damage to both the dog and groomer, especially if the dog had turned aggressive since she is an elderly animal. However, I believe that the sedation given may have been a bit too strong for the dog and should have been an even lower dosage.

Before I had my current two babies I had never had a pup that needed to be groomed. Trying to be a responsible pet parent I researched everything about grooming and the best place to take my first girl in our area. The first couple of visits were fine, and don’t get me wrong, she looked amazing as did every dog I saw walking out of the privately owned pet food/grooming store but she looked terrified. The next time I took her back she didn’t want to stay and she kept trying to run back to me. I really believe something had gone wrong in that last grooming to make her afraid. We never went back there. Unfortunately after that I took her to Petsmart and she was afraid to be groomed every time. I read that dogs could be sedated for grooming. I had not known about this before. The vet gave me a medication for her. We used it a few times. I didn’t like the fact that she had to be sedated to be groomed. I did more research and decided to groom her at home. She didn’t look as great as when the professionals did it but at least I knew she was safe. When I got my second pup of the same breed she absolutely refused to let me groom her. Thankfully, I found a groomer that is wonderful with them! When they see her they are so happy. They run right to her. I always ask her how they did and she says they did really good but they don’t like having their feet done, lol. I have always told her she can’t be talking about my girls. Since the quarantine she is not grooming and I have had to go back to doing it again. My girls get right up on my grooming table and I am able to get every step done with no issues! She is right though - they both hate having their feet done, lol I believe if you can find the right groomer who is willing to work up a trust with your pet it is best not to use sedation. Some dogs may have had a bad experience before and they expect every groomer to be that way. Another thing to consider is that some dogs could have undiagnosed health conditions and giving sedation could be harmful. Of course this is only my opinion and everyone knows and loves their pet the best and will do the right thing for them.
