You’d be surprised. The Spanish grading is tough. They really want to preserve the breed. Seen many not pass the grading. They measure EVERYTHING. And if something is even half a centimetre off of their max/min for the breed standard, it doesn’t pass. Some are lucky, if it’s young enough, it’ll grow and can be regraded. But if your horse is already fully grown - no grading. No grading = no registered offspring.

Dear Matt, I have never had a horse, but I have always had very long hair. When I was a child, my mother would always start brushing my hair from the top down. That would cause pain when she would hit tangles in my hair, but she just kept brushing through in spite of my tears. But, someone told he that she should start from the bottom & work her way up, & that not only worked through the tangles more effectively, but it reduced my pain considerably. And, it's the only way I brush my hair to this day. As you were brushing Emprio's tail, I noticed that he jumped when you hit a tangle, & I know that you adore him & wouldn't want to cause him the LEAST little bit of discomfort. If you start from the bottom of his tail & move up, not only will it work better, it will be more comfortable for him, & at the end, the brush will just glide through the whole tail!

He was wonderful during all of measuring. He’s so beautiful Matt. They don’t pay attention to how he lunges, only their natural gait for the breed. I think he’s going to be very tired in his future with all the breeding. I’d love to have a cross with emporia and the quarter horse. My favorite breed

Those two breeds were bred for completely different tasks and therefore have a very different exterior, different movements, different bodies. I personally don't think that would be a cross that makes sense. Quarters for example are supposed to have as little knee and hock action as possible, and are not bred for collection, but for flat movements, whereas PRE's are supposed to have a very upright posture, lots of knee and hock action, and are bred to have lots of collection. If you breed such different traits to one another you risk to get offspring with traits of both sides that don't go well together, even possibly causing the horse physical problems. No hate, just my to cents from working on breeding facilities for almost 40 years, some of them as breeding manager and consultant. ❤

In general I strongly disapprove of any horse breeding, whether it's done out of interest (which basically means it's done just for fun), or for money, because there are already far too many horses. That creates the situation we now have, where there are millions of unwanted, neglected and abused horses. But I guess somebody needs to do some breeding, to preserve the breeds, or they would all die out, and I believe that Matt will be as responsible about it as he can, within the constraints. I hope he will be very choose who he will sell Emporio's semen to.

If breeding is done very responsibly and carefully, I am ok with it, I mean, it is part of my occupation, but your arguments are very valid nevertheless. I have to say lots of breeders are either not educated enough or just don't care to educate themselves. Instead they are 'breeding' very large numbers of horses, to hopefully get one or two that are what they hoped for them to be. The rest... well... they are still there, but depending on which country you are in, they either end in kill pens, on horse transports, or, if they are lucky, find a loving home. Luckily not all breeders are like that of course, but ignorant (and/or greedy) people are everywhere... Lots of examples out there at the moment, showing the harm irresponsible breeding can cause. Speaking of deformed vertebrae in the lower neck area, causing neurological problems, and so on and so forth...

If long mane and tail are a mentioned attribute of the breed, best tactic for a stud book classification test would be to leave it all loose. The Friesian stud book is much more strict, stallions tested and judged yearly, in hand, under saddle, and in harness. Also loose in a big yard to see natural movement. A Friesian stallion does not reach full studbook status until the age of 10. Oh, mane out! So I was right. Also I think the tail should be long, trimmed level with the fetlocks.
