It's kinda funny, cuz Tom Woods' politics represent everything MacIntyre opposes on a pretty fundamental level. And I'm pretty sure that MacIntyre's greatest interest in appearing on Tom's show is to convert libertarians to his side. But 'Nightfall' by Candlemass is a pretty sweet album, I'll give him that.
@NeonAnimeDreams3 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say everything. Tom is a family man and realizes the importance of community, he also understands how the regieme operates and wishes to dismantle that control grid just as Auron does. They are fellow travelers in my opinion, it's just their end goal isn't exactly the same.
@seaofseeof3 ай бұрын
@@NeonAnimeDreams Politically, literally everything. Tom Woods is firmly in the liberal position of Ludwig von Mises, Bastiat, and so on. This is the tradition that MacIntyre firmly and outright rejects and blames for the ills of the modern world. I'm sure they have a lot of commonalities in overall worldview, for sure. MacIntyre and I do as well, anyway. As I value shared history, culture and communal bonds over politics as well, which I'm sure Woods would be on board with too. But politically, with Woods being a Misesian and MacIntyre being a post-liberal, they are resolute opposites. And MacIntyre's frequent mockery of libertarians reaffirms that.
@NeonAnimeDreams3 ай бұрын
@seaofseeof Macintyre is sometimes inconsistent though. He will bash the entire liberal experiment in one sentence and in the next say the constitution is a good framework to run society provided the core beliefs of the people havn't changed. In my opinion, Macintyre probably wishes to go back to something that resembles a small classical liberal government but with some changes here and there and certain things put in place to guard it. I mean, he's not a monarchist or an advocate for theocracy after all, so I think I'm more or less correct with what he really wants, but feel free to have your own opinion on it.
@Rasenganplanet3 ай бұрын
@@seaofseeofBastiat lived 200 years ago and supported all kinds of government interventions into society that would seem feudal. There is no “Liberal Project”. Men back then who identified as Liberals enforced obscenity laws, restricted women from voting, executed criminals weeks after catching them, upheld racial hierarchies, and colonized the world. Tom has no particular issue with local hierarchies and neither does Auron. Tom has always been against immigration and abortion. Tom has always had a soft spot for traditional societies through local governments, duchies, free cities, small kingdoms, etc… that can operate with little governments in their vicinity. Tom and Auron view the US Empire and security state, lockdowns, bailouts, the welfare state, abortion, states rights, immigration, Christianity and the trans question in fairly similar lights. Reactionaries and right wing Ancaps are natural allies in almost every contemporary issue, with only a few exceptions like drug legalization.

Libertarians have understood the reality of political power for longer than these reactionary types. The problem is that despite knowing what they know they either don't know how to properly confront it, or are unwilling too. Perhaps there is no answer other than to let the powerful make their own mistakes and collapse the system all on their own though since the reactionaries, much like the Libertarians, also fail to act to change things.

A message for the Bill Maher types who have either never really understood group dynamics or think that somehow, someway, the brand of liberalism they believed was a force for good will make a comeback after the crazies have had their chance to vent: “That evening loud laughter and bursts of singing came from the farmhouse. And suddenly, at the sound of the mingled voices, the animals were stricken with curiosity. What could be happening in there, now that for the first time animals and human beings were meeting on terms of equality? With one accord they began to creep as quietly as possible into the farmhouse garden...They tiptoed up to the house, and such animals as were tall enough peered in at the dining-room window. There, round the long table, sat half a dozen farmers and half a dozen of the more eminent pigs…The pigs appeared completely at ease in their chairs...'Gentlemen,' concluded Napoleon, 'I will give you the same toast as before, but in a different form…here is my toast: To the prosperity of The Manor Farm! ' The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” ― George Orwell: Final Chapter of Animal Farm Nothing new under the sun. Power eventually consolidates. It's not strange bedfellows at all, simply new arrangements based on mutual interests. The fruition of Marx's dialectic. What? I thought this was what you wanted. Funny how reality has a way of bringing everyone down out of the clouds at some point. Or as John McClain put it: "Welcome to the party pal." The thing is, you sent out the invitations. The crazies were just serious is all.

"Everyone is Conservative about what he knows best" Whoa, whoa....how is that not controversial? Firstly, in explaining this maxim, Auron is using the innocuous definition of Conservative, meaning cautious or risk-averse. So even if the statement was correct, it's a sleight of hand to try and then imply some profound conclusions about political Conservatism. But the statement is not even correct on those terms. The people most familiar with skateboarding are not the most Conservative skateboarders - quite the opposite. If I borrow a friend's car, I'm more conservative with it than I am with my own. Only an extremely narrow and esoteric definition of the terms used here could make that statement true. In fact, the opposite is very often true.
