I don’t think that taxpayers are going to foot the bill here. What is on the table is a bit of flexibility in the timeline of the tax bill being paid. Ultimately it will have to be paid and that is in the interest of taxpayers. What is not, is the bankruptcy of the company, which would mean the bill never gets paid and taxpayers receive no benefit and a whole bunch of people lose their job

The government should take an ownership stake in return for a bailout, then when the time is right sell that ownership stake at a profit for the state. Nothing wrong with playing the game to the benefit of the people for once, anything less is just more corporate welfare again, the same CEO's that benefit from bailouts are the same people who will be calling for 'dole bludgers' to be given welfare cards and have their dole cut off for not answering the phone or claim the homeless don't need help because they should have brought a house - . I don't know what Southbank and Roma St Parklands have cost Queensland taxpayers but IMO both have been worth it. This is different in that I doubt anyone lost their home and family at the Parklands, regardless of the weather. I went to the Treasury Casino shortly after it opened and never returned - the bars and restaurants were OK but the gaming floor looked like an RSL club, complete with patrons who looked like they were decked out at Vinnies when told they needed a collared shirt. If the taxpayer has to prop that operation up, I fully understand the howls of protest but the thought of that massive structure being abandoned blows my tiny mind. One bailout with strict conditions and ongoing third-party monitoring - if they still can't run a business, cut the cord and let the chips fall where they may.

The more visitors to the cbd will bring in outside money. This money gets spread out through the whole city and greater regions surrounding Brisbane. If the bigger companies at the top don't aim to increase income, the professions with lower profit margins will not grow. The economy will hit a stalemate. You can't increase population without increasing production and foreign money coming in. Increasing the population is daunting but necessary to prevent a localised recession. Infrastructure, town planning, and preservation are critical for future proofing cities and regions.

This is absolutely something Brisbane needed as a city. I've lived all over Australia and the reputation from others is always "Oh theres nothing to do or see there." Queens Wharf will bring so many people to the city for so many different reasons. We need the jobs, we need the tourism, we need that income. People in the comments talking about locals not wanting to gamble because of the cost of living, the locals arent the target. I know people who work in the high rollers areas of the Sydney casinos and by god the amount some foreign nationals will drop in one night of gambling is enough to make me sick, but then they go out to local restaurants and local shops and spend money there too.

I really hope this development is a success. It is precisely what Brisbane has needed for a long time and could be a catalyst for meaningful gentrification in the CBD. Queen Street, Myer Centre, and Wintergarden are an absolute pain to get to, and they are so disconnected from Southbank. With the new Queens Wharf precinct, we now have a meaningful connection between Southbank and the city. It provides pedestrian-friendly access that is far more convenient than Victoria Bridge. It generally allows for a stay in the city and plays in the Southbank vibe, which has never existed before. I am not booking my hotel just yet, want to make sure it stays solvent first, but very much looking forward to a visit into the city, and really hope the development spreads from here.

Queens Wharf doesn't come remotely close to Marina Bay Sands. For Brisbane it's a big thing. But by world standards it's pretty standard. Brisbane needs to think bigger if they're going to be a leading destination, and bring big money to QLD. They're already stuffing the Olympics. I'm very close to saying, time to give the Olympics to Sydney. But I'll reserve that for the time being. The government needs to stop bailing companies out. Obviously the costs benefits didn't stack up, but they went ahead with it anyway. Given we're headed for recession, I don't think it's going to be this grand destination for Brisbane it's been talked up to being. It'll be at least 5 years before that comes to fruition. People are stopping spending because the cost of things is just getting ridiculous. That's going to dramatically bring down the benefits of Queens Wharf, because if the locals aren't spending much money there it's going to be very difficult for it to remain viable. It's not like Brisbane is an international tourist destination where tourists will keep it afloat. So it will be difficult for it to remain viable in the short-term given the economic environment. However, over 10 years it'll become a destination. But no the government should not bail them out. Unless they're willing to forgo a majority share to the government. It's time our governments stop bailing out these companies unless the business is willing to give majority share to the government. For too long governments have been throwing taxpayers money at corporations to keep them afloat, continue cutting corporate tax rates, and in return these companies continue to rort consumers and pay zero taxes while we the taxpayer bails them out every 10 years. That's money that could be better spent on our ailing health system, educating our kids, building more infrastructure, or building more housing supply. If these companies can't survive the business environment then they shouldn't be in business.

Also offers the potential for more pedestrian connections between the two sides of the river given there is no freeway to worry about. HOWEVER, I do worry about the plan to handle Brisbanes congestion if this becomes the case. The road network is a mess and public transport options aren’t exactly the most effective rn. Hopefully they can do something to combat that, otherwise this would be GREAT for promoting walkability and improving quality of life.

it is an absolute waste. I predicted that many of the restaurants would die out in a month because sadly, thats the effect the cost of living crisis has on daily lives. The CBD has died out. We even lost Myers state flagship store. Much of the wintergarden is also dead. Brisbane CBD in general has not recovered from the pandemic and is a ghost town. And spending money on casinos is stupid. As an anti-gambler, I believe the place shouldnt of been built as a casino in the first place. I do support the redevlopment of the space but to have a controversal casino as the anchor tenant and owner, well thats one problem. I dont think the place will close. At worst probably the casino will close and hotel but you will still be able to walk through to the neville bonner bridge or wander to the upper levels if you dare. The sky deck would probably stay open. It is our very own marina bay sands.Brisbane in general isnt well known which is why if we want to be known well we need to advertise ourselves and get the 2032 olympics right. Find it kinda ironic that the premier doesn't want to spend money on a new stadium yet will hapilly throw out a life line to a casino during a cost of living crisis

I believe Myer will enter the old Treasury building once the Casino has cleared out. I don't know how it will do there, as Brisbane lacks pedestrian connections through the CDB. Hopefully, they put a pedestrian bridge across from the new Star complex. While I am not a gambler either, there is value in having a tenant like this anchor the complex. While most towns and cities have shopping, not many have casino's. If you live anywhere in regional Queensland other than Cairns or Townsville, the best you've got are the pokies at the pub. A Casino provides a big tourism draw card that you wouldn't get from more retail. Hopefully, this is a launching pad to provide other entertainment-related amenities, as the CBD has been lacking these immensely. Personally I would love to see a Koala sanctuary or something of that nature more in.

@@priceprice_baby yeah there's nothing like a casino to corrupt a state government. Look back at the free passes given to Star by Mike Baird and NSW Libs and of course we saw what that government was like via Gladys Berejiklian. Qld Labor sold themselves in the exact same way. It's not only the lockouts and reduced trading hours they introduced to prop up this project. There's been other things given up for Star, for example the busiest bikeway in Queensland will now be "shared" with a pedestrian concourse with meandering tourists wandering out of Star into the path of commuters. This is akin to building a shopping center food court in the middle of a freeway. As soon as a pedestrian is hit or nearly hit we all know that Star won't be made to made changes, but instead riders will be forced to dismount and walk. That will lead to less people using the bikeway and in turn going back to driving and adding to congestion.

North Qld. and Tasmania have casinos. They and maybe others might be interested in having a casino there if Star does not stay afloat as a business. As far as i know, Tasmania still has a casino running. Might have a look at that Brisbane place sometime.

Gold Coast also has a casino. Not so far for them to put some casino operations into Brisbane. Prefer roulete and blackjack myself. However, they tend to mostly have machines at the Gold Coast casino. Feels like a pub type operation on a large scale. I prefer to see roulete wheels and blackjack tables being run by people with a look of class to the place.

Let a community club take over similar to West HQ, Panthers, and other similar venues in NSW. The building assets could also be moved across to the state investment fund so it pays dividends for decades to come. The gambling profits go into the community rather than shareholders of a controversial, poorly managed, failing company.

Not sure the closing of Star in Brisbane is the QLD governments problem... or the unions problems either... rather the company took on this project and now cant afford to run it because of their bad business model... You failed to mention any liabitiy for STAR in your monologue

@@Lukas_Teo theres more to it than the neville bonner bridge, a new world class sky deck/observation deck. The building itself is an international landmark, Sokyo for dinner was amazing and im sure the other restaurants will be great when they open, the retail shops, the heritage buildings that have been restored, the treasury will now be a cutting edge Griffith Campus in the city. Investments, residential tower for people to live, tourism multiplier + millions of people annually, the green spaces and park underneath. You can't just percolate this master project down to a public bridge. This will also inspire the next developments in Brisbane. Does anyone apart from Mel have a positive outlook on the future!? 😂

Went there on Father's Day, walked over the uphill bridge from SouthBank, bugger all shade , everyone will get drenched when it rains.... It's worse than a suburban Westfield Shopping Centre. Very little visible Directory signage. The staff weren't given clear directions as to their job specs., the bars were understaffed. A sea of thongs & Tee shirts, instead of shoes , collared shirts & dresses. Blazing hot in the after noon sun at the Sky Deck. Had a quiet drink in the Live Wire Bar...... As they say, " It'll be nice when it's finished ".

Maybe if Star Casino was not guilty of money laundering (fined $100 million), they wouldn't be in this dire situation. And it gets worse if you really think about the sort of people who they were money laundering for. As far as the tax issues go - we all pay our tax so why should they get a "get out of jail". I have no sympathy for a parasitic casino.

I live just at roma street. Work down the road at edwards street. I can't see myself ever going there... Why a casino? We already have one right next to it! Should have made it another performance arts centre! If I want to go see a play. South bank is BOOKED out for months in advance. I think to myself. What if something comes up in 2-3 months time and i can't go. Waste of money. The treasury was ALWAYS empty. Another performance arts centre would have been a MUCH better choice then another, unused casino. Brisbane aren't much for casino level gambling. Everything is to expensive for the average person to go blow a thousand on the tables. Expecting to make millions off tourists gambling, is a big gamble. If it had plays going... Maybe I would have seen wicked already AND ACTUALLY visit the eyesore.

I hope they can get the financial support by the government, it's a loan, not a handout. The massive taxes already paid by the developer, the taxes paid by the building contractors already makes it a no brainer to support this project. The government will take in billions in GST from the hotel , the food and Beveridge taxes , the salary taxes and of course the gaming taxes. Plus of course the extra revenue coming in from abroad that would otherwise not hit our shores. It's a tax generator, to our advantage.

Rock and a hard place. No business should be allowed to avoid tax’s, however Brisbane does need this project to succeed for many economic reasons. It has and will provide many jobs people who are finding it tough. Gambling is again a double edged award. Yes it is a problem for many people, however the gaming machine trust fund helps so many charities with much needed funds for things the government can’t afford to help with. So it is a dammed if we do and are dammed if we don’t. I can promise you, if it’s not the Star it will be Hard Rock or the Crown taking its place. Star, pick up your game, because it was your fault which is why you got the fine. Pay your tax like we all do.
