The special Parliamentary session of the 18th Lok Sabha will convene on June 24 with the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected MPs, followed by the election of Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26. The Speaker & Deputy Speaker posts seems to be a bone of contention between BJP & Congress. The INDIA Bloc wants NDA ally TDP to take up the post of Speaker, and has challenged that they will field their own candidate if it is given to the BJP.
The three new Criminal laws, ‘Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’, ‘Bharatiya Sakshya Adhinayan’ and ‘Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita’ are set to replace the existing ‘Indian Penal Code’, ‘Indian Evidence Act’ and the ‘Code Of Criminal Procedure’, respectively. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi, urging him to defer implementation of the new criminal laws.
Unlike the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, this time, the ruling BJP failed to cross the majority mark on its own, thus relying on the support from NDA allies, Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U).
With a stronger INDIA Bloc, the opposition is likely to raise a host of issues, and making it a bit difficult for the Modi government to pass laws in the Lower House.
