Will Royal Enfield axe the Interceptor 650? Will we see A 750 version? Blackout variant announced!

BLACK IS BACK! Quite a few viewers have speculated that Royal Enfield are getting ready to discontinue the Interceptor and continental GT 650 models. The new black out versions muddy the waters even further by adding more premium features. Could it be that they are a stop gap model leading into a new 750cc iteration?

Continuous improvement might do well for them! A gradual increase in VALUE, give more confidence to the owners. There's no doubt in my mind that we already have too many choices of higher horsepower, higher levels of complexity, and a general impression of being generic and covered with plastric! Why try to "keep up" with people who are going in a wrong direction? I just got up, I think I'm trying to say: I couldn't agree more with Sanj Z! For my own part, the "big single" has been on my mind for a few decades... I've only seen pictures of the Classic 500s and Continental 535 is it? They seem like just the thing in a picture! Discontinued! There are still some around where I live, hope to be able to see them in person. I think these are the bikes I've always wanted!

I bought my Interceptor, in Ravishing Red ! ... not so much for what it was but for what it wasn't.. As a 650 it met my needs and in fact exceeded them in many departments. Value Vs return was a major selling point. A recent visit to my RE dealer was a bit of a sticker shock. Added models with flash and bling.... also adds to the bottom line. RE should stick with the winner it has, keeping in mind quality.. value Vs return. :)

Personally I think RE have timed the release to coincide with: 1. The end of Winter, people are now thinking about Spring and riding again. 2. Create pushback for the sudden flood of BSA Gold Stars that are being picked up by customers and will be possibly drawing potential buyers away from RE. Personally I don't have an Interceptor but if I had the choice I would buy the Interceptor👍🙏

One of your better videos. I feel that the Interceptor and GT are due a design review..The heavy, oversized exhausts (and position) make it uncomfortable for a pillion rider. The performance is moderate at best and could do with an additional 10hp. Both bikes could do with better suspension and perhaps wheels and meatier tires. Also the lights could be better,m not necessarily LED. These are relatively heavy bikes and hence I don't see the capacity being increased beyond 700cc. Feedback at most dealerships in India is that the super Meteor is too heavy. RE should bring back the Classic 500 and if it could produce close to 40hp it would eat into the Goldstar.

Hello, the one section of the Interceptor that I've found odd wish was changed is the air filter box. All of my previous motorcycles had air intakes that drew air from the outside of the filter to the inside of the filter. My singles had one filter. The twins had two filters. I had a triple that a single large filter that the three carburetors drew air from. Outside to inside on all. By the way the triple had a vacuum operated diaphragm fuel pump. It drew vacuum from one carburetor and fed pressure to all three carbs. Very efficient, worked fine, allowed for a gas tank mounted fuel petcock with allowing for reserve fuel capacity of about half gallon of fuel. The lack of reserve fuel is where modern motorcycles have taken a turn for the worse and devolved. I recently saw a custom fuel box to rectify the Interceptor air filter box. In the back of my mind are my Honda Twin motorcycle air filters and their simplicity. Otherwise, the Interceptor is spectacular and the zenith of the air cooled 650c.c. Twins.

Great video insight into the new models and possibilities. I test rode the new BSA back to back with the Interceptor last week. The quality of the RE is head and shoulders above the BSA in every way. Far better valuefor money. Then I got on my 2017 Triumpg T100 which I've had since new which despite its age, 6 years old, is still a better bike again. That said, it's alot more expensive than the Interceptor and if I was buying new again I'd probably go for the Interceptor. Thanks Stu. Keep up the good work!

Again, anything above 649 cc in India gets classified as a 'Superbike', and the insurance premiums shoot up astronomically. With the crowded traffic conditions and poor roads here (yes, there's still cows all over too) it is still an understandable engine-size policy.

I hope that the interceptor stays as it is and for God's sake RE do not follow all the other manufacturers and keep enlarging the engine, 650 is plenty. I don't like the black engine, it looks horrible and when the paint flakes off (and it will) getting the cases repainted is a nightmare (I speak from experience) and the same goes for cast wheels - I have exchanged the cast wheels on the bikes in my garage for spoked wheels.

Thanks Stuart. I do value your opinion on bikes and completely get your review technique of using the bike for at least a week before you say what is what. However, when I saw the first pictures of the Super Meteor, I knew right there and then that it was the bike for me. With not a starter button being pressed by anyone anywhere in the world, I was down at my RE dealership and putting my deposit down. I may have been the first person in the UK to actually put my hard-earned down on one of these models? It's got the same engine as the Interceptor (the model which I will be PXing) so it'll be alright. Got a phone call last week and it's in the showroom. With any luck, it'll be in my shed sometime next week! As for a 750 version of the interceptor. Not really needed, as it goes well enough as it is. Top speed is pretty irrelevant these days but a little more low down torque is always welcome and as far as I can see, that'd be the only advantage over the 650. RE would be better off making a nice 500 single in my opinion...

The "Blacked out" version of the Interceptor and Continental GT will be a welcome edition for some. The black engine cases will be easier to look after and could potentially make these an "all year ride". The alloy, tubeless rims might be welcomed too for some. Like you said Stu, I believe that the switchgear cases are now alloy (from the SM650) too. These improvements might represent a mid life-cycle upgrade for both models which would indicate there's potentially a few more years in them yet. A "750"? Maybe, as long as they are easily restricted for the A2 licence category (as Triumph do for the 900's). I doubt if we'll see many radical new engine designs this close to the IC engine ban. Manufacturers will be diverting resources into the R&D necessary for the electric future? For me, the Interceptor in black but with chrome exhausts please 🙏😁

I don't think they will drop the 650 engine, there are lot more bikes on the works with the 650 engine, there is a scrambler version of the interceptor on the works, a bobber version, a classic or bullet version etc. Their focus is currently on bringing the new himmy with 450cc liquid cooled engine. Bringing new engines to the market in current emission stricken market condition is a big gamble for any company. But there is a rumour that they might start working on a new 850cc engine in the future but it hugely depends on the success of the 450 engine and they probably will only start working on it after bringing the new 450 to the market. But even then the 850 will probably sit on top of 650, they probably want models which customers can upgrade to...now i have seen people go from 350 to 650 and so 850 will be a good upgrade if people wanna move up from 650...

I spied a set of Vredestein tires on the Continental GT. I did not know that Vredestein was in the motorcycle tire business. I, like you, have wondered about the future of these two models. I would like to see a bump in displacement to 700cc for the Conti with upgraded suspension and brakes. A simple cylinder bore with lighter pistons and a performance tune would take care of that and make it a really fun blaster. It is, after all, supposed to be a sportier version. As far as the Interceptor, I'd understand completely if they'd just upgrade a few switches and levers. Why fix something that isn't broken. Maybe a slight tune for more mid range torque. (for us fat guys) Diggin' the new colors, too.

I am an old school biker, and have always cherrished the old design of the classic "British" big twins, Only a few days ago I was surprised to see around 50 of these bikes in my local town, obviously owners on a ride out for the day, and more interestingly was the crowd that was around them, and not just us Old "boys", younger lads and lasses who had arrived on their japanese machines, all oowing and aring at the look and sound of these bikes, I had a short love affair with the RE 350 bullet ( until some scrout stole it, never to be seen again), it was at that time I dropped out of motorcycling, but if I were to go back on two wheels, then the 650 in either the interceptor or Metior range would be where I would land, for me it has never been about speed, it has always been about freedom, comfort, ridability and pure pleasure, A-B isn't about how fast you can do it, it's about how much you enjoy the trip, and these bikes are built for just that, riding pleasure, as for the demise of the I,C,E, lets just watch this space, because the fasination for electrification is not the gold star we are being lead to believe, one fact that is hidden from us all is that the carbon footprint for building EV's is greater than the current IC's, then theres the issue of what to do with the used up batteries !!, the one thing I would like to see on the "cruiser" style is the inclusion of a full rev counter as per the old style bikes, those of us who ride don't need built in navigation, because our rides are normally just point and go, we don't need to know where we are going, we just go, and stop where ever lol, Ride safe, and Keep the reviews coming.

Hi Stuart, I agree, when i saw the special editions and now the blacked out versions i had the same feeling, special editions or exclusive editions are often the precursor of new models. Having seen the new Meteor 650 here in Luxemburg and considering the overall build an finish quality far superior to the actuel twins, i think this would make perfect sense. Or we may see an upgrading of the existant models to the Meteor 650 standards, like LED lights, USD forks, the blackout variants already being equipped with the new switch gearings and grips. My dealer told me, they were expecting the new 450 Himalayan for the end of this year. A new classic 500 equipped with that engine would be very nice.....😉

Excellent video Stuart. I wish this were the case. However, RE is an organisation and all organisations need to make money to survive. In the case of RE, they just dropped some cash and gambled on the twins and it is too early for them to drop even more cash on yet another engine. The 650 twins are a very new engine for RE. Consider that engine design, manufacturing, testing and the whole slew of logistics and sourcing of parts suppliers etc takes humongous time and money, this 650 has nowhere near even arrived at the peak of it's bell curve of lifetime yet. It has yet to reap in rewards for RE..So bear this in mind the next time you speculate. I'm not the only one here suggesting that most manufacturers of almost any automobile out there are in the habit of developing a platform or an engine (or both) and then utilising them across their range for years if not decades. This justifies the investment that goes into new engine designs in the first place. Moulds/Tolerances/Testing/Certification/Parts sourcing/Vendor deals/Vendor Quality adherence/ Logistics /Repair networks-- they all consume a lot more time and money than one would have you believe. These engines aren't going anywhere. Just look at the Twin 650 from Suzuki that provided power to the SV650, the VStrom and other Suzuki models and also look at the years that engine stayed in production. Now, an argument can be made that they can perhaps simply tweak the current 650s, after all, they are under-stressed. And there, I agree, Stuart. They are under-stressed. But I cannot see RE having the confidence to do this. The reason remains in the fine print -- The Classics, Hunters, Meteors as well as the twins, all cite a 3000miles service regime including tappets (Yes, it might just be tappet check, but you only check when you are uncertain). This means RE is still trying to gather market data on how well the new engines (J platform as well as the Twins) are performing. Invaluable data that otherwise could never be collected by any amount of in-house testing. This will then be fed back to RE and help it either go full-confidence on future engines or tweak its designs/quality standards ever so slightly. Eventually, either way, we will see them come up to par with Triumphs 10K mile service interval. So at this stage, I doubt RE want to bring in another unknown factor to an as yet unbalanced equation (the increased capacity from the current twins).

Hello there Stuart! Many thanks for this excellent video. I was very unimpressed by these two new Interceptors ,-) Imho a classic motorbike has to have spoked wheels. The Lightning version with bits and bobs costs €6.987 here in Spain, but you can't order the spoked wheeled Interceptor without the extras. I was offered a Super Meteor to test ride as no Interceptor was available. Not a cruiser fan, and didn't like the foot peg position. Impressed by the engine but found neutral tricky to find. The dark green paintwork is gorgeous! I'm hoping to find another dealer that has last year's Interceptor model perhaps.

As far as I can see these bikes perfectly fit licencing requirements. Bigger might mean fewer sold. An 850 might be worth a look. It would be very over square. A 500 bullet is needed. BTW. These twins are more powerful than 1960s twins they clone. When people say a bit tame they ignore the truth. The Harris frame might make it seem tame.

Love the black style. Also worth a mention apart from the alloys and switch gear is the new int 650 should have a much wanted usb port along with LED headlamp. Not sure why they kept the rear light cluster as non led. Plenty of life left in 650 engine, just like the Kawasaki ER6 twin engine. Others on this thread mention the BSA 650 single. Will not buy one of these. Handling is not as good as Enfield, and it looks and feels cheap for the price. On verge of buying the Meteor 650 but will wait until after your review. So until then i keep and use my 2019 Interceptor 650 and Scram 411. One last comment. If they do a Scram 450 i hope it rattles less than the 411 engine.

Hey Stu, it's all your fault, I bought a RE INTerceptor 650 about 8 months ago. I started following you about a year ago and it's been an interesting ride. I'm a rider with over 500K miles under my belt, racked up over a period of nearly 50 years, mostly on Honda Gold Wings. My last heavy weight tourer was a '17 Harley Ultra Limited. As much as I hate to admit it, old age, I'm 78, and diminished physical abilities forced me to make a decision. Do I quit riding or do I find a smaller bike. You got me very interested in the Interceptor so I decided to try one. After I rode it for for several months I was really impressed and felt comfortable letting the Harley go. I followed some of your recommendations and installed YSS fork kit, which made a huge improvement in handling, Up and Over bar backs, K&N air filter, Enfield Precision cans and the Touring seat. The little bike is sweet, the engine is unbelievably smooth for a twin, it handles well, the tyranny is super smooth shifting and it looses most of the Harleys in the twisties. It brought me back to the days when I started riding. I really enjoy you sharing your insight, experiences, observations and technical expertise on KZbin. Keep up the good work.

I have a RE 350 Classic and an 800 Cc Suzuki Boulevard. If I ride alone and stay on 55 mph highways or less I take the 350 every time. It’s lighter, more nimble and more efficient than the 800 cc Suzuki. If my wife or grandkids ride with me or if I will hit the interstate I take the Suzuki. If I could only own one bike I would get one of the RE 650 variants. It would be the best all arounder for power, efficiency and weight. A 500 cc single modern classic as many have stated might be a good substitute for the 650 as an all arounder. All that said if the change to a 750 is a simple bore / piston change and does not add weight it might be worth considering However, no engineering change is ever trivial so if changing to a 750 adds cost, reduces efficiency, challenges reliability, increases heat coming off the engine I say don’t bother. The 650 is more than adequate already. A 750 does not address any other issue but marketing hype.

Good one, Stu. Enjoyed the opening and the sound of your bike riding past. Totally support your approach to reviews. A week or more is needed to get a good feel for a bike. A 750 with extra hp has appeal, but I am happy to stick with my 650. A 750 V twin would be very tempting. One accessory I believe is missing for the 650s is a larger fuel tank. An 18ltr tank would be great for touring. I find the range on the gt is inadequate where I live, and swapping to an interceptor tank only gives a marginal increase. Looking forward to your review on the super meteor, which might be called a tourer rather than a cruiser. Cheers

The new 450 Himi will be out this year (maybe) with around 40 hp. That, of course also means a brand new engine to use also in other types of bikes. RE are big enough to also have the muscles to develope bigger engines but will they? Going up to 700-800cc would be the easiest as they already have most of what is needed but on the other hand they would need to build something great to make a splash. Just a bigger Interceptor would have to have a paintjob like a Triumph, better electronics and not be much more expensive than said Triumph so is there a niche? Also the japanese have great bikes with superb quality in this size segment so the competition is fierce. Will be interesting to follow this, in a year or two all will be clear...

Don't seem to be bad upgrades to be fair tastefully done. Main advantage appears to be tubeless tyres for convenience of repair, but I prefer spokes personally so I'm happy with tubes. Little extra performance for long distance touring, especially two up may be a good idea, I find the standard 650cc motor ample for my needs including motorways, all about personal choice I guess 🙂

The engine is Air cooled and that is one reason the engines are dialed down a bit, and to be honest, what would 10 more hp really do? I will take a lower hp engine that is still sufficient (as this one is) over a higher HP engine that will add a few thousand to the sticker price. I had driven faster bikes that did not feel as solid as this bike, on the highway this bike is as good as any other bike. It will cruse at 75 all day long and still has plenty to spare. My only issue with the bike is the tires, but that is not a big deal...

Hi Stu, looking forward to your review of the Super Meteor, and as you say, do it the way you feel is right to give the best opinion/views. I have a Meteor, and am very happy with it, but it could do with just a bit more oomph. I rode a Scram 411 the other day and that had just enough (dual carriageways were fine on it at 70, much better than the Meteor which is a strain). My main worry with the Super Meteor is it's just too much of a jump as I love the weight/single/simplicity of the Meteor. As another commentator has said, just a small increase in cc's would really do the trick if RE has the will, and keep the weight as close to current as possible.

Good update video, I think that a new 500 would be a great idea, I find the classic 350 very good and is much better than the old 500 EFI classic, but it would be a bit better with a little bigger engine, so I think there will be a market there. The Interceptor is a no frills, relatively cheap, high quality medium sized bike, I owned a Street Twin for a couple of years, then an Interceptor, the difference in price is not matched by performance that is for sure. A 750 Interceptor would enjoy as much success as the 650 I'm sure. Another good update, Thanks Stu.

I would probably still have the CGT if it had been blacked-out; and especially if it had tubeless wheels. I looked at the silver casings one day and that was it. Cleaned and polished one last time and traded it. I think the twin’s size and power is fine; it already outdoes the suspension and chassis. I’d much rather see a blacked-out 650 single Classic. The Gold Star looks better than the Interceptor, but the Classic looks better than the Gold Star, in my opinion. I actually think a 650 single would suit the GT and Interceptor well, too, if not better than the twin to lighten them up; but that’s just me. I already have a 750 twin if I want more power, and truthfully, I’d rather just get a T100 or even Street Twin if it’s power that I want in a modern classic/retro because those have delicious torque that a 750 can’t match. If RE is going to make a bigger engine, I vote for a blacked-out 1100 for the Super Meteor’s successor to offer some retro competition to the ultra-modern Rebel 1100. Still holding out for a blacked-out 650 Himalayan-like ADV with ADV tire sizes (both would need cruise control).
