Became a Shellback in '72 aboard the USS Wiltsie DD716 while on our way back from RVN. I think I would have preferred the initiation on Delos than onboard a Naval ship. I can still smell and feel the garbage, foul smelling slime we crawled through and the swats on our butts from the pieces of fire hose of those that were already Shellbacks. Such a fun experience and I'm glad our Captain re-routed us so we could be initiated. Safe travels Captain Brian, Exec Officer Kazza, Master Chief Nugget and crew!

During my 4 years in the Navy , I became a Shellback and a Bluenose. I crossed both the Equator and the Arctic Circle. While I was in.

So much fun!!!!! I am going to have to look for my Shelback paperwork. I became a shelback while in the US Navy back in 1981'. Yes, 42 years ago, but I remember that day like it was yesterday. The crawling on all 4's on a Navy ship with it's non-skid on the deck was murder!! Being tagged by sooooo many shillelaghs, made from 2" and 3' fire hose, was HELL!!!!!!! The garbage from the galley was saved on the fantail in black plastic bags for more than a week.. The smell was enough to gag a maggot!! That, of course, was installed into a conduit of sheets and plastic that was about 30 feet long and only about 2 feet in circumference. Adding to it all, we were wearing our t-shirts and pants both inside out and backwards. Going through the tube of nastiness, what was our garbage from the galley, some before me barfed in it, but the smell was already so bad, we only knew it because we could hear some ahead of us barfing.. Once through the tube, intestines, as they called it, we met King Neptune. He was a fat Boiler Tech. who happened to be probably the hairiest guy on the ship. We had to rub our faces in the incredible disgustingness of chemical warfare that they had concocted especially for us to make sure we'd remember that day for the rest of our lives... We could not jump into the sea to flush all the crap off from us as we were surrounded by sharks.. I think someone said they had been following the ship from the nasty smell of the labyrinth of the (INTESTINES) we all had to crawl through.... Then again, I never saw any sharks as we were not allowed to look over the side. If anyone, (MANY DID), barfed, it had to be inside of Neptune's intestines. The next morning, the captain presented us with our awards and made a kind of speech. In it he congratulated us, but made a very big mention of how disgusting the ship looked and smelled afterwards. He said: in the many, many times he has made this crossing, he had never been on a ship that took this day to such extremes. Then said that he knew this crew could go into battle in any condition and we would come out smelling better than the ship did the day before.... I don't remember his exact words, but he was a very serious man who, for the first time I had ever seen it, smiled and made everyone laugh... What a day that was........ Congratulations to our newest members of this elite crew..... CHEERS!!!

My late uncle was a Navy Seabee during Operation Deep Freeze One and became a shellback in Dec. 1955 on his way to the geographic South Pole on the USS Wyandot. Their mission was to build the facilities for the scientists that would arrive in 1957 for the International Geophysical Year (IGY). He showed me his notebook of diagrams and calculations he used to locate the geographic South Pole and install the marker. He had some good stories and photos. The doctor on the mission was Dr. Isaac Taylor, father of musician James Taylor. Besides being the doctor, Doc Taylor also operated the camp still.

I crossed the equator several times, first 2 times was a cruse fron Newport News VA to Yokosuka Japan and around the horn on a Navy oiler which was too deep a draft to use the Panama Canal, took nearly 3 months with a 4 day stop in Hawaii. Believe me there is WAY more water out there than you can imagine and the Pacific is 3,000 meters deep in most places. USS Mispillion AO 105 Happy for the Delos crew that you have wind and are SAILING across the Equator and not having to motor.

I became a Shellback in 1956 crossing into the South Atlantic on the Troop ship the USNS Darby (long ago scrapped). I used to have a certificate granting me the status but it disappeared during our many moves. The crew of the Darby made a big deal of it but no need of blurring was required. Boy, that was so long ago.

As a young man in the late 60s I was aboard the USS Intrepid CVS 11 aircraft carrier. It was hard to believe that all the military discipline up to now that the US Navy would actually stop a carrier in the middle the ocean and just drift for a day to carry out the wildest ceremony thet a young kid could ever imagine. Yes I am a Shellback twice over.

I'm guessing the "Nugget" is probably one of the youngest Shellbacks ever! CONGRATS! As a five-time Shellback (U.S. Navy) myself, I can attest that there is fun to be had by all when crossing the Equator (Shellbacks have most of the fun though, Polliwogs not so much!). I never did obtain the coveted "Golden Shellback" which is earned by crossing the Equator at the International Dateline. I am a Golden Dragoner also as I've crossed the dateline several times (entering the "Domain of the Golden Dragon" from east to west). 🌴😎 Stay safe, FWFS!
