Forcing black people to explain ALL of their trauma PUBLICLY is becoming a trend that really irks me. Especially in white spaces. Like this really bothers me. It happened to Garcelle on RHBH and now Will has to PUBLICLY talk about his trauma in order for people to see him as a person??? This isn't vulnerability. It's coercion. Will is allowed to feel angry about this.

I agree I think it’s centered around the refusal to see Black people as victims and just only as transgressors. Trauma porn is necessary to assess if we can be “the perfect victim.” And this is not to absolve Will of what he did, but to speak on the refusal to allow Black people to be complex. Instead we are subjugated to a binary of good and evil.

@@869ofuncertainty I’m actually glad he didn’t mention that in the apology. Even if I think there might be some truth to it I think most people would just get annoyed and think he is trying to make excuses and play the victim. I think his best recourse is to just apologize and condemn his own behavior. Explaining why he did it or the trauma he has that drove him to do it is not something most people want to hear about.

Flag on the play... Will Smith was asked several years ago about getting professional counseling to help his marriage. His response was something along the lines of "proffesional couples therapy is cheating ... the ppl in the relationship should talk to one another." He clearly has unresolved traumas that need to be addressed by a professional. He cannot scoff at the treatment, yet hide behind the illness as an excuse for his actions.

I'm passionate about his one, grab a drink! 😅 *The 'dark side of Will' cynical exposes are actually pretty concerning* when what we're seeing is a person desperately trying and failing on the journey of self-actualisation, like most of us in life. I do not buy that the likeability and charm is a crafted facade for celebrity... true genuineness can be felt and there are too many nobodies like Will with nothing to gain. His complexes are definitely from inadequacy and masculinity/machismo **in marriage**, something he witnessed negatively in his dad causing trauma. But these feelings are obviously exacerbated by his particular environment and chosen partner. An environment where his self-destructive agreeableness to compromise from traditional values to open marriage leads to a public reckoning led by his wife, flaring up core trauma - known by his wife. An environment where the needless extra scrutiny the talk show brings cannot be objected to even as harmful to Will's reputation and mental health it can be. It's about an environment where such deference is encouraged, it is feminist after all... yet resented because it doesn't represent the dominance and masculinity the partner craves. I won't speak on Tupac. *This slap wasn't about alopecia or Jada being disrespected.* It was about... STILL feeling the need to prove his adequacy as a husband, Twenty years in, because an undercurrent is present that means it's not a safe space to heal, despite all their combined years of extensive therapy. We are all talking about the effect of Jada because that's the common denominator. Will is one of those cautionary tales of men who married the wrong partner and doubled down, because he couldn't bear to go down the road of divorce a second time. Bad marriage for life. Divorce and breaking up his first family is his *actual central trauma* and he's spoken on the anguish of personal failure and public humiliation it brought. So when Kim says it's on him to face his issues, I'm not sure you know it's Jada, or the level we're dealing with here. Stepping away from another marriage (esp. with him seeing it as family breaking failure) is the final beast, the one he can never confront.

I'm reading his book (it's actually really fun, would make a great limited series) and this must really be hurting him. Like it hits on all of his childhood and early adulthood traumas: fear of disappointing people, shame of not protecting the women in his life, loss of the spotlight/love of fans and attention, being perceived as a coward. It was just really crazy to see how so many people twisted the situation just to look for a reason to hate on Jada. Like ima be real with you, I’m not her biggest fan and I don’t like what she did with the whole August Alsina situation, BUT I’m able to look at this incident objectively and know that she: 1) didnt deserve that joke from Chris, and if it offended her then it offended her - end of story. 2) Will is a grown ass man that has a mind of his own, he choose to get up on that stage and do that 3) Will ain’t demanding for no public apology from Jada and doesn’t NEED her to ‘defend him’ from the Internet trolls. Just because you’re confused about how their relationship functions, doesn’t mean they gotta continue to explain it to the public 4) if Will wanted to divorce Jada for whatever reason, he absolutely could in a heartbeat and be completely fine, have all his money and move on with whomever. He’s CHOOSING to stay with Jada and no video compilation will change that. If this had happened to literally anybody else, people would’ve said that the husband did what he had to do (aka if Tom Hanks defended Rita Wilson in a similar manner or Jay-Z defended Beyoncé similarly)

There’s definitely a lot of insecurities and traumas around Will. From watching the abuse his mother went through, to the questionable way he raised his kids and the seemingly “complicated” relationship they have with him, to the complications of his marriage, to the potential qu-eer dimensions him and Jada have and how it’s effected his ego and masculine pride (something us black folks don’t like talking about when we discuss their marriage), to the dichotomy of wanting to desperately be “the nice guy” but also be seen as macho and tough. There’s a lot going on. It is quite something that so much of it has cracked through the same year he won an Oscar, something he’s been clearly trying to get for almost twenty years. Now, no one even remembers that he actually won. It’s clear that so much of his life has been driven by traumas, fragile masculine and need for validation.

I do think less of Will. If I walked up at my job and slapped a co-worker across the face in front of everyone, I'd be fired and rightfully so. What he did was assault. I struggle with perfectionism and I recognize the need for accountability. Saying he isn't perfect does nothing to help him get the help he needs. Thinking less of him doesn't equate to wishing him ill though. He is not well and hasn't been for years. I think time away from the public is good for him. He needs to find himself apart from seeking the approval of others. I wish him well and hope we see him come back even stronger than before. He deserves that while also being held accountable for his actions.

Dv survivor here too, you didn't see a slap as a big deal? After 2 years in therapy I'm able to recognise that any level of violence is violence and I think it's quite scary that you have become desensitised to violence and I wish you the best in any future relationships because its quite easy to get into 'oh it was only a slap, no big deal'. Someone putting hands on you to deliberately and Intentionally harm you is a big deal that is your body and no one should lay a finger on anyone regardless if it's a push or a punch. And I do say deliberately because a person knows what there capable of regardless of trauma or C-PTSD. My ex had PTSD and used his violence towards me but took no responsibility and used this as an excuse. Tbh we all have some trauma and it is how you choose to deal with it, will had a good amount of time whilst getting up and heading over to the stage to ground himself and use soothing techniques and to make a choice and he chose violence it takes once second to make a split decision

Polanski was charged with assault of a 13 year old girl, plead guilty in 1977, and STILL won an Oscar after that in 2002. It was only decades later, in 2018, that Polanski was expelled from academy membership... The amount of shock and vitriol I've seen about "the slap" is absurd and out of proportion when considering how the "Academy" has handled (ignored) child sex abuse. I agree to a certain extent, it doesn't go away, you learn to manage it and minimise the triggers. But I feel there is a difference here, will has a better standing point, he HAS the money to be in therapy each week, he HAS the ability to have a private therapist that he can call up when feeling triggered and go through these grounding techniques, the body, mind, only need 30 days to form a habit so imagine all the access he's had for years to train his brain. I've had therapy for 2 years but it had to end due to the amount of money it cost but I would definitely still be attending my sessions if I could but I don't have the luxury like celebrities do, and yes I get trauma is universal and celebrities are only human just like us, but what I am saying is that he clearly didn't use all his access and opportunity to help himself, lots of time has gone into the many movies, and music he does where he puts alot of effort it and he has to work hard for his role if he had put the same effort into his trauma work there would have been a different outcome and now he's inflicted harm upon someone else.

“I am deeply committed to putting light and love and joy into the world.” It occurred to me that maybe the message could be “I am deeply committed to putting light and love and joy into myself.” He seems concerned with people liking/trusting/admiring him. I know we the public and his peers and his career might all feel so important, and getting a positive message across to all of us might seem like a high priority for someone like him. But I don’t think the public opinion of him should matter as much or more than his own opinion of himself. I can’t imagine trying to unpack my trauma, take accountability for myself and heal, while also trying to appeal to the public all at the same time. It seems almost like making messages to the public might become counter intuitive and distracting, or even distressing. Because that’s a lot more outside voices to have to hear and then try to appease. Personal growth and healing isn’t something he owes any of us.

Will Smith slaps a guy (who honestly deserved to at least be called an asshole), apologizes for it and clearly feels bad for everything that happened. I've been waiting to watch this video for what seems like forever and I wasn't disappointed. Thank you for not adding to the voices bashing him over the head for not being a "perfect negro" 🙄 because I think there's a lot of pressure on him too, to be a squeaky clean black man who made it out of Philly in one peace and made a name and reputation for himself. I hope he heals from this in healthy ways and learns that he still has value as a person and an actor, despite his painful past and his less than savory choices. Edit: what you said about white people being invested in his persona probably explains the Amy Schumer thing. And yes, comedians are hellbent on trying to defend their "right" to continue to say the indefensible with no consequences under the guise of "it's a joke", and always at great personal/psychological cost to the subjects of said "jokes".

Yeah it won’t be the same, but he’ll be absolutely fine. It’s not like he’s gonna locked up like Harvey Weinstein or forced to FULLY retire. The man just won’t get as many leading roles as he may like.

I don’t care about either Will or Chris. The Academy, the Oscar’s organization is at fault here. Yes, it’s live, but the correct approach is to remove Will from the event. Apologize for his absence when receiving the Oscar and try to sweep it under the rug, so Chris and Will can talk in PRIVATE. And then the academy can make a choice. They handled this horribly, as Will said, he made a mistake, he is human as well as Chris. The organization should be prepared. They aren’t a single person, but a collective of people that handle everything. Security, the first thing you learn is you gotta dissipate the fight and separate the people involved. Chris had to continue to host, but they could take a 5min break FOR SURE. Very badly handled, people make mistakes, organizations shouldn’t.

I didn’t think less of Will and still don’t think anything less of him. He did what he did and he is suffering the consequences of those actions. However, people are really making this worse than what it was! I’d like for the Academy to really step back and think about how they still supported and allowed Roman Polanski to win awards even after he was found to have r*ped a young girl (in the 70s). Will slaps someone and they can’t let it go. Will going through this must really be affecting him in a serious way. But they don’t seem to care about that.

Please. Let us not forget that Jada herself is a trigger for will after the introduction of her unorthodox relationship style when will solely wanted a traditional relationship style, to having it come to light that she was in love or had deeper feelings for august and the social ridicule he received. Then trying to lie about his feelings to preserve the relationship he longs for. Jada is a trigger

This is the nuance a lot are missing. Obviously she doesn't deserve comments about her condition (Chris' writers obviously didn't know), but without a certain marital environment that we can all see, he wouldn't have blown up from feeling inadequate as a "protective" husband. Whats worse is after compromise and then getting exposed he's made to answer to the public, because of his wife, flaring up these traumas she knows about. The talk show cannot be objected to even as harmful to Will's reputation and mental health as it is. His deference is encouraged cause it supports her dreams, yet its resented because it doesn't represent the dominance she's chasing in other men and since Tupac. Who wouldn't feel worthless and try to overcompensate under those conditions??? The slap is still feeling the need to prove his adequacy as a husband, Twenty years in, despite all his therapy. He married wrong unfortunately. She's no safe space to be around.

People keep their jobs all the time while being problematic outside of the workplace, but get canned if they pull that same crap at work. This is why he is banned from the Oscars while others are not. Is that right? Maybe not. But the comparison is not apples to apples.

I am open to anyone else's opinion on this but I take physical violence very seriously - - especially when its unprovoked as what Will did. I think the argument that everyone needs to let up and forgive him is off. No one other than Chris Rock needs to forgive him. What we all do have the right to do is judge him for doing what he chose to do. Offer grace and forgiveness to those in our actual lives or people that made poor decisions when they were young and/or not thinking clear but Will Smith can and will be judged. That is what happens when you transfer your own person issue within your marriage to physically attacking someone on live television.
@teebelles921

I equate physical violence as equal to verbal violence. For someone to touch my face that’s the ultimate disrespect but then to someone else causing hurt to their loved one is the most disrespectful thing. It’s a matter of perspective. I would have slapped Chris but definitely off camera and then leak the info to the blogs. 😂

You’re just judgmental and not willing to give grace to people you don’t know. Maybe it’s based on your OWN experiences and Will slapping Chris was based on Will’s OWN experiences. How many times must he apologize for a one-off mistake to satisfy you? The answer is he can’t apologize enough to satisfy you because even after an almost perfect 30+ years in the business, people like you hold him to an unreasonable sense of perfectionism. Ask yourself why you feel the need to do that? Maybe it’s about you more than it’s about Will…

@@AriesGirl7719 I am judgemental and make no apologies for that. We are all judgemental should be. It’s up to me to decide who and where grace is applied. On that I don’t disagree with anyone else’s opposing opinion or forgiveness. It’s their right as this is mine. I also don’t believe this had anything to do with Chris and everything to do with Will and his marriage/self image so ultimately his apology was disingenuous.

@da midwif agreed. I’m West Indian and to my culture touching someone’s face is the ultimate offense and like many others, I was raised with issues of violence that is the basis of my zero violence stance. Anyone else is welcome to their opinion, this is mine.

@@mc-ge2bt Being judgmental is not something you should be proud of. It is actually a negative personality trait. And as you stated “you believe” these things, but you actually have no idea why Will did what he did. You are using your own history to cast your own OPINION on the situation. Instead of judging, maybe try giving grace to a situation that you only saw the tail end of. And, your history is also making you see his apology as disingenuous. You do not know Will, Chris, or Jada and you do not know anything about their inner feelings and thoughts. It must be hard to be so perfect that you can’t forgive people for things they have done, even after they apologize repeatedly. No need to respond. You are not the kind of person I want to have a conversation with. Good day. ✌🏼

This is a bit of an aside, but I really didn't appreciate how a lot of people were blaming Laverne Cox, and using her little joke as a justification to attack her and spew their transphobia. Laverne is one person, and that was one (possibly unnecessary) joke. But they act as though social media in general hadn't been ripping into Will and Jada relentlessly for years before that evening. Furthermore, Laverne is not responsible for Hollywood's hypocritical blacklisting and hysteria and character assassination; they literally still turn a blind eye to child molesters while going into a frenzy to cancel Will Smith. 🙄

My thing is, Will Smith is heavily therapized. He speaks in therapy language. He has been working on himself, his marriage, his family dynamics and his ego for atleast a decade now. That's what he told us on red table talk. How is he still getting triggered to the level of slapping another adult in 2022? Any therapist have an answer? Shouldn't he have an airtight coping mechanisms after a decade of various forms of therapies?

Coming from a person who's been in therapy over half my life of many different forms with many different therapists.
