As a Canadian I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of our accents.

+cestima He lived in Vancouver. I do too now, and I can confidently say that there is no accent here (except the ones from immigrants like myself). We don't pronounce "about" the way he says it. I don't hear any difference with our neighbors of the South, 40 min away.

+Ghostface89100 OK, now I'm curious, you've got me thinking... I'm in Southern Ontario too. Never really given too much thought to a 'class system' in Ontario. Maybe that's because there's a tradition in England (fading now, but once incredibly entrenched) that you could tell a person's standing by how they spoke and the accent they used. Being from the north, or the midlands, east London, west country... This is why there's 'received English', which is essentially 'the Queen's accent'. On top of all this accent stuff, there's no question that speech patterns play a big role in how a person from a particular social stratum sounds. But 'heavily class-based' in Southern Ontario? I'm inclined to say that it has more to do with speech patterns, word usage than it does accent. I think if you took a 'middle- to high income' person and had them keep their accent but adjusting their word usage and speech patterns to do an impression of someone who, for the sake of argument, might be a low-income manufacturing worker, you wouldn't hear that much of an accent difference. But as I say, you've piqued my interest, and I'll be paying more attention to what I hear when I'm out in my not-at-all-upper-class neighbourhood.

I have friends from Calgary, Moose Jaw, and all over Ontario, and I've been living in Montreal for a few years, so I've heard many different variations of the same words. But people seem to think that we all say "a boot", rather than "a boat" only in certain areas. Even though there are definitely pronunciation differences in within Canada. I can't remember which area says which anymore, but in Vancouver vs. Montreal, some pronounce "adult" as "uh-dult" with emphasis on the second syllable vs. "ah-dult" with emphasis on the first. Btw, do you really commonly use "bunny-hug"? I've heard my Manitobian friend say it and I thought it was adorable.

I’m Canadian and I think what is considered to be a “Canadian” accent seems to be just a more friendly projection of words with clean/crisp pronunciation? (Sorry if that’s a weird description!)
