Thanks so much for noting Russell Case's heroism. You're the first to have done that, among all the other reactors I've watched. I wanted to add something to your comments. I think a good part of the movie set up Case for his last scene, being berated by his son, berated by the jacka**es in the restaurant, and even getting eyerolls from the soldiers who were asking for volunteers. He was the perfect come-from-behind story, the guy everyone dismissed and thought a loser. Your comment on him leaving off the last part of his talk to the soldiers? I think it's just another director's indulgence to get a laugh. You tell me: The entire world is being destroyed by invincible aliens, and they roll their eyes at his story of being abducted. What exactly about his story, at that point, is hard to believe? Emmerich could've left that out, but he couldn't help himself.

Notes: Area 51 was used for black-ops development of advanced jets and such. It was also used for storage of crashed alien vehicles, though a lot of materials were offloaded to Wright Field (now called Wright-Patterson AF Base). Operations have moved to various other sites, due to the scrutiny on Area 51. The DEFCON system has five levels of military readiness. DEFCON 5 is the default setting during times of relative peace; DEFCON 1 is the state of imminent nuclear war. Notable Scenes: Will Smith's Reaction Upon Seeing the Alien Ship: Realistic, unlike the jaw-drop by his girlfriend. Will Smith's Reaction Upon Being Notified of the Destruction of the Base: Very difficult to connote real loss and Smith did a perfect rendition of it. Good acting. Funny story, the actor is color blind. His brother helped him match up his outfits. We knew they were fighting when the actor came to school in totally mismatched clothes. They were both great people. We all hoped the younger brother would go to the NBA but didn’t.

the aliens didn’t account for that kind of “low tech” technology when they did their cyber security, because their shit is so much more advanced they didn’t even consider ours to be a threat. Also they integrated their signal into our technology to communicate with each other, so he didn’t really have to “hack” anything, they (the aliens) had already done it for us. I see this criticism of the movie all the time, but when you break it down it doesn’t break the rules already established by the movie

Deleted scenes indicated that the crashed ship's computers and programming had formed the basis for all of humanity's advanced in that field. Our code was derived from theirs, and given that David was able to recognize and affect the original targeting signal, once he'd had time to study the fighter's OS he was more than capable of writing up some quick one-time function override code. Then he just sent it off into the mothership's system and let its own automatic coordination processes do the rest.

Schlemiel is a Yiddish word - - it kind of means someone who's sloppy or dumpy, but it isn't just appearances - - it's more of a description of a personality. This is a good illustration I found: A schlemiel is somebody who often spills his soup and a schlimazel is the person it lands on. If you like Judd Hirsch, check out the classic sitcom Taxi. He was kind of the straight man on that show, but it's a really funny show, also featuring, among others, Christopher Lloyd, Tony Danza, Carol Kane and Danny DeVito; set in 1970s Manhattan, so you'd probably get a kick out of that as well. DEFCON is an acronym for Defense ready Condition, it's an old Cold War designation for military readiness that I think it still active. DEFCON numbers going down reflects the severity of situation to be ready for. DEFCON 1 = nuclear readiness or the dawn of WW3-- we've never been there before. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960's, where the Soviet Union decided to place their nuclear ICBM's so close to the US (which we kind of started by putting ours in the countries of Italy and Turkey versus the Soviet border), the USA went to DEFCON 2.

"Def Con 3" That's "Defense Condition 3", relating to the state of military alertness, where Def Con 5 is normal peacetime, and Def Con 1 is total war. "Schlemiel" is a Yiddish word for 'fool', or 'inept. Closer I think is 'dork'. To illustrate, it's often said: "A Schmuck is the man whose soup gets spilled. A Schlemiel is the man who spilled it. A Schlimazel is the man the soup lands on."

Nice reaction to Independence Day! Was this the Director's Cut? I have the Theaterical Release on DVD and I noticed some scenes that I have never seen before. Again, great job! 🙂

35:52 There is almost no CG in this movie, it is all layered matte shots of models and miniatures and fireblasts. The CG is really limited to the Alien shields and laserblasts. Almost everything else is real stuff.
