I'll have to admit I bought the 2LP Nirvana reissue last year, but it was done at 45 RPM on 200 gram vinyl. I couldn't resist.

It’s not just new entrants, I’ve discovered jazz in my sixties, I’ve managed to buy about 300 releases from the fifties, sixties and seventies, all remastered. No vinyl fatigue here, you can always just move on.

90% of the time there is only one thing I care to see/look at with a 20th, or 30th Aniv label on it.....and that is when it says "For The First Time On Vinyl". Especially now that the 90s stuff that was not big on vinyl is hitting the 25th and 30th aniv marks. You are spot on about them seeking the new collectors and that is cool, but yeah for the veteran collector I just don't need one more version of Nevermind or Nora Jones' Come Away With Me lol.

I'll admit, it does get a little exhausting with how fast and how frequent they are throwing them out nowadays, but as you mentioned, when they throw in either a quality reissue or stellar bonus material, then it's totally worth it. Case in point: the Van Halen collection II has the first proper reissue of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge since it was first released in 1991 and that one was long over due!

I am good with box sets for the most part, I enjoy the books some include and sometimes extra music that wasn't included in the original release. My issue is when there are prints included. I am not hanging those on my wall. But that's just me. As long as it is good quality and well done I am good with it. That being said, I have only half a dozen box sets and a couple of them I am probably getting rid of. My favorite box set I have is an LP from George Michael titled Older. It was released in 1996 so not a ton of vinyl was pressed for it then. To have it released on vinyl was an absolute thrill for me. Especially with a third LP! It also came with five CDs. No complaints here. I totally understand where you are coming from. To have so many out there can be overwhelming.

I like some of the box sets coming out, and I buy my favorites, but the prices in the last couple of years got ridiculous, especially on CD box sets. Nirvana is $160? For 4 CDs? Nevermind cost that much when I bought it a few years ago, and to this day it's selling for $80 on Amazon. I'll keep waiting for in Utero to drop.

Thanks for another great video GI. From my perspective I usually buy box sets of albums I don’t already have on vinyl. Most of them comes with a lot of bonus material and extras, which I fully enjoy. 😊 As you mentioned; the price tags are something we could debate. Only when I see a good discount on a box set I’m looking for I’ll go for it, most of the times it’s a big pass.

Great video and interesting topic. As a hardcore Beatles fan I need to have all their super deluxe editions. But I learned, that at least in Germany, after a few month prices dropped significantly for the last two vinyl box sets. So for the next SDE I will wait ... if i am patient enough.. haha

I decided to buy only LPs that I don´t already own in LP or CD format (with a few honorable exceptions) and this is working for me. I try not to give in to the "fear of missing out", altough sometimes it's hard. One example is the recent releases of the Red and Blue Beatles compilations. I know they were remastered and have new content, but I already have pressings from the seventies that I love and still play. Probably that excludes me from the "Record Collector" category, but I just want to listen and enjoy the music, and in the future leave my few thousands CD's and LP's for my kids to enjoy them as much as I do.

I don't generally care about the "extras" like live shows and alternate takes. For me to care about an anniversary re-issue the new version needs to add substantially to the original. For instance, the Replacements are reissuing their albums (4 so far) and the ones that have been reissued for the most part have been reimagined. Dead Mans Pop is a great new version of Don't Tell A Soul, the recent Tim reissue was remixed, so I'm getting an audibly different version of the record. Pink Floyds Animals 2018 re-mix is another one where it is a substantially new album that is noticeably different from the original The other type of re-issue I like to purchase is one where the original album is out of print or scarce, like Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. that's just my .02

Radiohead oknotok and kid a mnesiac are my favorites because of the extra album of B sides. NIN fragile definitive edition for the extra tracks. If it's an album I love and the reissue has extras I'm getting it.

Box sets are almost without exception, prohibitively expensive and I never buy them unless they are drastically reduced on clearance. I definitely think a standard copy of out of print records should be made available instead of just releasing box sets for long out of print records.

Very interesting. Some i like very much (despite all the shit they are getting, I love the Metallica boxsets, great value for somewhat more money). Others leave me stone cold, despite the fact I like the band very much (Black Sabbath are great in putting out Ozzy era sets every year it seems).

I think you need to do a little poll of your viewers and social media. New Records & boxsets are unaffordable for young collectors, the labels target market are Middle aged people with disposable income.
@NTXVinyl
@NTXVinyl 6 ай бұрын
I can see that on box sets, but now normal new records. The younger generation has no context like old dudes like me - they don't know new records used to be much cheaper. So, $25-30 for a standard LP is commonplace. A poll is a good idea, but I know our audience is mostly 45-65 year olds - so I doubt we'd learn much.

I remember when the baseball card hobby was ruined by companies flooding the market. I think this is different because most vinyl collectors are interested in the music more than resale value or collectibility. It’s not like flooding the market with collectibles that have no purpose other than collecting. Vinyl records are meant to be enjoyed and played - so these types of box sets and reissues have a larger purpose. It’s unfortunate that record stores may have to take the hit because they’re stocking this stuff that may eventually go unsold.

This segment of the market has gotten Ludacris in my opinion. They recently released another anniversary edition of The Beatles red and blue LPs. That is about the 50th reissue of those LPs alone then one can add the other 100 reissues of the other Beatles LPs! How many do we need? The prices are up to around $350 for reissues! I pity the fool who buys these things. On top of that the sound quality is usually sub-par or has issues. For example, it has been reported that on the new Red and Blue reissues some of the songs are poorly remixed and sound better on older editions. Then there is that "new Beatles" song that doesn't sound right at all. This stuff needs to at least slow down or stop in my opinion.
@NTXVinyl
@NTXVinyl 5 ай бұрын
It won't slow down or stop unless people stop buying it. Some get over pressed and end up sticking around a long time, dropping in price. But other times the label guesses correctly and they are sold out in days. There is a market for it like it or not

They are cash grabbing on a hot market. We are witnessing the end of an exciting hobby. Think about it, the demographic of most of the buyers are aged 35 - 55. At some point that group has had their fill
@NTXVinyl

No end in sight. You call it a cash grab, but it's simply a business. The labels have always worked their back catalogs, and always will. The more digital our lives become, the more importance will be placed on physical, collectible things - like LPs, and box sets. Can you tell I'm an optimist? :)

The ones I've bought, I haven't been disappointed in. I've been collecting since I was a little kid and now I'm 66. I've seen a lot and I like alot. My favorite artist is The Beatles and I have loved their vinyl box sets. I think these box sets and anniversary editions are great, but that the companies should always take theirbtime, prepare good content, good packaging and give us something good every time. 😁
