No. After shooting off 8 rounds of .30-06 in rapid succession I doubt the ping of a clip would give them away. The Garand is also quick to reload with a little training. GIs tended to stick together so if one ran out there's a high chance there would be others around to cover a reload. If there aren't then the ping won't be what kills you. Lack of back up will.

Imagine thinking hearing a ping would ever mean anything other than there's 11 other guys in your squad within a few meters to shoot while you load. Also not included in this test...the sound of mortars, artillery, tracked vehicles, etc. The Germans used noise as a trick in this regard I know of for a fact. Often to cover a withdrawal they would drive a halftrack in circles back and fourth behind their lines nonstop to make it sound like a massive build up of armored forces for an attack when in fact they would often have just a few dudes left in the area.
@Guts35702 жыл бұрын
what if you didn't have 11 guys with you, and instead had about 4, on the second floor of a farm house surrounded by germans? i would imagine the guy guarding the stairs telegraphing to the enemy that he's reloading would have been a problem. you can watch Lockered 'Bud' Gahs's interview on Remember WW2 for more information on this.

My father fought in WWII. He was an infantry man with the 21st Armored Infantry Battalion, 11th Armored Division. He was in action from late December 1944 until the end of the war in Europe in 1945. He and his brothers and cousins, who had also served in WW II or Korea, would often joke about fellow soldiers who weren't very good at the manual of arms and got 'Garand Thumb." The 'ping' of an expended Garand clip seemed to be more of a problem for the Korean War era soldiers than the WW II soldiers I remember talking to. The WW II vets I spoke with at my dad's division reunions never complained about the 'ping' of the Garand. They loved the Garand but always referred to that rifle as the M-1. Their only complain was that it was heavy, and two bandoliers of ammunition, or sixteen clips of 30-06 was heavy and made a lot of noise. My Korean era vet relatives were a lot more convinced that the ping from an M-1 clip would encourage the Chi-Coms to attack than than my WW II relatives were about the Germans or Japanese attacking when they heard the ping of an empty M-1.

The only time I heard of this was from my dad who had heard it from an old USMC vet that has been in the south pacific, But it wasn't necessarily the ping, could have just been the pause in firing but the Japanese would try to move or throw grenades etcetera. So they would pair a carbine with the garands and have them just pepper the area to keep them pinned. So it could likely have been the pause in firing that the enemy heard and tried to move but the us heard the ping and assumed it was the ping tipping them off.

Im not so sure this is an apples to apples comparison, but when I go out remote fishing (hiking a couple of miles to a remote part of a creek here in southeast Texas) I always bring along my daily carry 9mm Beretta and a (not daily carry) 2 inch snub nose .357 revolver that I load with .38spl CCI shot shells. I've had to use it a few times to run off a coyote and on a couple of water moccasins (one of which I somehow snagged on a lure when reeling it in and it was under water the whole time till I got it to shore where it aggressively tried to bite and chase me with nowhere to go). Well when I was surprised by this 40 inch moccasin, I fired 3 shots at it and found that I had mistakenly loaded a +P .357 defensive round in with the shot shells and well, I'll tell you what... On the 3rd shot not only did the snake explode into pre-shredded BBQ, but my eardrums had also exploded. My ears had gone past tinnitus into complete silence! I've shot without ear pro on before with a few different calibers (9mm, .45, .22-250, and 5.56) but I never tried the .357 even though I knew I could possibly have to use it inside a vehicle for self defense. I could not hear anything for about 10 minutes. Not even rumbling, roaring, footsteps, or even breathing or a heart beat. I was no longer in fear of the surprise attack by the snake, but in fear that I had permanently gone deaf. On the hike back, ringing had started and some hearing had started to return. I could hear my footsteps, but only through bone conduction, not on the ground. When I got back to the car I could only hear certain things like the opening and closing of doors and the trunk but not the sound of the key chime or the radio, I could only feel the base in my chest because I had the volume turned to the max. Trying to figure out if I could hear anything yet. After 2 hours I could finally hear speech and enough that I was aware of what was going on around me, and after about 24 hours I could hear everything again but I had permanently damaged my hearing. I saw an ENT and he said I had moderate hearing loss and tinnitus. Needless to say I no longer load that gun with +P .357. Only defense 38 special loads. I can't even imagine being in combat, shooting .30-06 in rapid succession with only the helmet to help the ears. And artillery! Explains why most of the WWII veterans I met as a child were mostly deaf or completely deaf. I remember when my neighbor's grandfather would come to visit, they would always have to yell at him so he could hear. And when they were gone and he was home alone, he would turn the TV on that was connected to large speakers and would turn it up so loud that I could hear the infomercials inside my room.
