Last year, Iran was rocked by some of the biggest protests the country has seen since the foundation of the Islamic Republic - as people were calling not just for women’s rights, but ultimately for regime change. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Yet how realistic is that in a nation where the crackdown against the protests has been brutal and where the leaders are unwilling to alter the theological and ideological basis of their power?
In this week’s episode of the Fourcast, we speak to the head of middle eastern studies at the Royal United Services Institute, Dr Aniseh Bassiri Tabrizi. She discusses whether the regime is weak right now and how worrying it is that as Iran becomes more ostracised from the west, it draws closer to Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

At this point, it seems like an inevitably. The majority of Iranian people are highly educated and hold Western leaning values, and I believe these protests will continue until this Isalmaic Fundamentalist regime that suppresses the values most Iranians hold is overthrown. I believe it's only a matter of time before something happens that makes these protests blow up in size, potentially to a size so great that the regime is overthrown. I'm sure there are many smart Iranians planning and organizing a mechanism for overthrowing the regime whenever the opportunity presents itself.

You said that the last time there was protests and the time before that and...I think you get the idea. Unless these protests are on the level of the 1979 revolution in terms of millions people lining the streets, nothing will happen.

It's absolutely tragic how long the great, intelligent people of Iran have been held back by this brutal, regressive theocratic regime. As I assume you know, Iran has one of the most intelligent populations in the world with a plethora of brilliant engineers, chemists, physicists, mathematicians, etc. and I really hope that one day this regime will be overthrown and the Iranian people will be able to show the world the greatness they are capable of.

Indeed, the Iranian people are some of the most educated in the world, and this barbaric regime has been suppressing the great people of Iran for far too long. Hopefully, at some point in the future, something will happen that will make the protests blow up to a size so great that revolution can be achieved.

𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗜𝗿𝗮𝗻 The World Cup games have barely started but already, we have seen one of the most memorable pictures: Iran’s soccer team staying rebelliously silent while their national anthem is playing before the beginning of their match against England. There have been other protests in Iran against the regime of the Ayatollahs, but this one feels different. They are no longer only against the government’s treatment of women, but have become a demand to transform the regime altogether and open it up to the rest of the world. Despite killing more than 400 peaceful protesters, the demonstrations are continuing in full force. The Iranian government is hostile not only toward Israel and toward its own people; it is hostile toward the entire world. Its stated goal is to impose Shiite Islamic law on the entire world, and it will not rest until it achieves it, however long it takes. Unfortunately for them, the Iranian people do not share the goals or dogmas of the regime; they want to live as people live in the free world, where people can do what they want, live how they want, and say what they want within acceptable limits. In short, the Iranian people want to be free and feel free. I have said before that Iran is a very ancient and very intelligent nation. I believe that if the will of the people triumphs, Iran and Israel will not be enemies and will resume the warm relationship that the two countries had cultivated before the Ayatollahs overthrew the Shah and set off a dark chapter in the country’s history. Oppression stymies development. Only free people can grow and change and develop, and change is intrinsic to human nature. If not this time, then perhaps next time, but in the end, the Iranian people will free themselves from the regime that wishes to oppress them and bind all of humanity to its yoke.

I'm not quite sure that she's a real expert! She's got to be kidding! People from all backgrounds and classes and ages have been demanding a regime change over the last many years, and yet she claims that there is no unity and people are not clear what they want! Let me reiterate it. They are loud and clear about the regime change.

@Farshid Qarabaghi As i mentioned, if protest became violent riots, governments will label them as terrorists and treat them like terrorist. Governments today aren't like the ones in the 20th century or other past centuries. They have many new strategies and tactics to counter any revolts or uprisings that threatens the regime's power.
