Give stainless steel a shot too. The JTECH lasers we sell are definitely are not for metal, but if you go very (very) slow at high intensity there is something in particular about the wavelength of the laser that can discolor the surface of stainless. It will not etch into the surface, but it can turn it brown permanently. We've been able to do some very light marking.

That's excellent advice! I will put that on my board for upcoming projects! Thanks for tuning in!

The aluminum reflects the laser back into the lens which damages the laser, you need to anodize the aluminium with a black coating
@jenjtechphotonics66352 жыл бұрын
Also, you can use powder coated aluminum, but it will only etch off the powder coating. Many people use it for panels on aircraft.

Fyi...diamond drag works great too although not as fast but it can be done on any bare or coated metal...and leaves a permanent marking/etch as compared to the lasering anodized or spray method which wears off easily.

Spray aluminium. Engrave logo, then use electrolysis (salt water etching). Im know this is not laser engraving, but works nice.

Hey buddy, I imagine the laser simply is not powerful enough to etch / cut bare metal. At this wattage you have a couple options. 1. Companies like CerMark have coatings that allow an etch of the material to be left onto the metal that you can then wash off so you have the natural bare metal appearance while keeping an "etch." 2. Paint, powder coat, or anodize the metal and then etch the coating, as you talked about.

Thanks for watching and thanks for leaving feedback! I think anodizing and powder coating are going to be the most effective and practical way of using a laser like this on aluminum for sure! I will be experimenting with both on this channel and even doing some of my own anodizing!

@@jonescompanycustoms7208 I actually just found this paper from J-Tech that shows a method they've used with powder coated labeling - while still removing the coat from the rest of the part, so you get the appearance of etching straight into the metal. jtechphotonics.com/?p=5582

@@BigVolucris thanks man! I will definitely give this method a try soon and make a video about it!

U just answered my question I have been wondering about .... I have ordered my mega V but have not received it yet. I was thinking about using a different laser that could cut through plexiglass about 3/8 inches think. Do you have any recommendations for that kind of a laser. I am new to CNC in the past I have gotten all my work done through a supplier.
@jonescompanycustoms72084 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Sheraz! I'm pretty new to CNC as well so my experience is limited but this laser might be able to handle plexiglass but 3/8 might be too thick. Look around on KZbin and maybe you can find a video of someone using this laser on plexiglass! Good luck, if you find any info please report back!

Spray Cermark or dry molylube on the metal. Even CO2 lasers can't engrave aluminum without prep. The laser actually just fuses the Cermark or molylube to the aluminum. Anodized aluminum seems to work as well , at least with CO2 lasers.

Thanks for watching! I definitely plan on trying CeraMark at some point!

Its not the wattage its the laser wavelength that allows to etch bare metals...fibre lasers can do bare metal...co2 can not and reg diode lasers can not
@josebelmar59423 жыл бұрын
where does it plug in on the mega v?
@jonescompanycustoms72083 жыл бұрын
There should be a longer wire that come with the laser kit that has a quick disconnect to remove the laser when not in use. If you ordered the laser kit with the Mega V the there should be a port on the control box where you can plug in the wire for the laser.
@josebelmar59423 жыл бұрын
@@jonescompanycustoms7208 oh. thanks. so is it that you get a different configuration in the box if you order the 4-axis kit instead of just the mega v with a laser kit ? i'm wondering because my box only has a port for the 4th axis and a probe.
